We recently covered the PLEX for Haiti campaign, in which CCP would convert PLEX contracted out to a designated PLEX for Haiti character to full cash donations to the American Red Cross towards Haiti relief.
The effort allowed for players rich in EVE Online but not necessarily in real life the ability to assist the people of Haiti in their time of need. And as it turns out, the PLEX for Haiti campaign has been quite the success, generating over $40,000 so far!
The fundraiser was set to end on February 15th, but since donations are still coming in CCP has gone ahead and extended the fundraiser in order to facilitate them.

Pretty impressive that a single donation was in the amount of 341 plex. That's over five thousand dollars.
How did you come up with $40k???
Only 32 plex were sold.
32 * 15 = $480 ( technically the amount is in euros ).
Or am I missing something here?
So far, a total of 2,290 PLEX have been donated
That's the part you missed, thinktank001.
+1 for CCP
Good idea
A great idea indeed! CCP ++ for making it happen.
There was 32 PLEX' that were directly paid for with EURO and given to CCP through the account management.
The rest of the 2290 PLEX' were given to CCP ingame.
And 2290 * 15 EURO = $ 47000
I helped out Haiti last year
a portion of my income tax the government stole from me went straight there.
that is Chribba players that dont afford to give a plex or dont have the money give isk to Chribba and then he buy plex from market and send that plex to CCP

"The 341 unfortunatly wasn't from me (since I did random contracts here and there). My bets on a big alliance or EVE-Radio's fundraiser (or perhaps karttoon? since the total value of 341 plex'es is over 85b in isk), my fundraiser thingy ended on 56 plex'es in total (~5.5b raised and turned into plex'es by pure ISK donations)." - Chribba

I think they must have assumed the 40k figure was in the original announcement and neglected to say where it came from. I came up with the 40k figure in Massively.com's coverage of the story a day earlier by assuming a cost of $35 USD for 2 plex, as is the price in the EVE store. 2290/2 = 1145 sets of 2 plex, times $35 equals $40,075.
Additionally, as every PLEX has to have originally been bought by a player somewhere for cash, even those bought in-game with ISK and donated have produced revenue for CCP. Each PLEX donated is one that was bought for cash but not subsequently redeemed for game time, meaning CCP can donate the full value of that PLEX in cash without making a monetary loss. Hope that helps explain where the $40k came from.

Awesome
If it's true, then it is awesome indeed, and a testiment to just how much computer games can affect things.
