Over the past 6 months I've been reading the forums of this site on a daily basis, yet I must admit I really haven't enjoyed any MMO over the past 8 years. I can't stand playing any game more then a month now. I've tryed a few, last disappointment was Lotro.

The current situation is actually a good thing since I spend more time on other hobbies, got married. Back in the days I must have played a least 250 days of everquest (over 3 years period). I was so addicted that I thought working was a waste of valuable time. I remember waiting at bus stop or being in class and only thinking about items and strategies.

I see the upcoming titles in the market and I don't see myself playing any game for the next 5 years either, yet I must admit I would pay a lot just to feel that old addiction. I've become a troll somehow, finding most game completely boring.

My expectations are with 38 studios and the possible elder scroll MMO, apart from that there is nothing to see.

I wish I could be a junkie like in the old days, however I think it is impossible now.

You can get burned out on anything.

Some would say you've out grown MMOs.

Maybe its something you need to take a break from and maybe revisit after a 6-12 months break? Yeah, definitely sounds like burn out to me or maybe the expectation of reliving previous moments that can never be re-experienced due to the ever changing state of the industry. I'm sure eventually you'll find an MMO maybe new enough to spark what you enjoyed about MMO's the most in the first place.

I was in a similiar position..

I absolutely Loved EQ, lived it & breathed it for many hazy years when RL was merely a distraction.

(Yup, reading it back it seems crazy now). So for my sanity, it had to go.

I then spent years as a 'lurker', (bit like an ex smoker carrying a lighter).

I am now happily settled/balanced with a family & a good career. However, I still love playing MMO's, now I have "willpower" (must've been a /claim reward as I don't recall buying it). I can log in for a few hours per week & get stuff done, 'get my fix' if you will.

My friends still play & although they flit between LOTRO, WOW & AOC, they never went back to EQ. I did though as the other games didn't cut it for me. I'm now playing EQ in a 'classic' stylee (on Stromm) Sure, the zones are sparse, but i've had no issues & am enjoying my return.

Hope you get your Mojo back!

The problem is, I've already been gone from MMOs for more than 6 months and I have no interest in going back because the problems that drove me away from them are still there. It wasn't burnout that made me leave, it was disgust. I got tired of the same old stupid crap in every game, the same bad mechanics, horrible communities, mindless grinding and rush to end-game. Until those things change, I'm not going to go back because I know I'd just leave again in disgust. It isn't me, it's the genre that's the problem.

I think the "disgust" you feel is that your expectations (what you want from the game) are the same... you want (despite the fact that it disgusts you) to rush to end game, you focus on the asshats and "bad mechanics".

I played wow for five years and put some 330 days played into it (I played AC1 before that) and I had to take about 6 months off of MMO's all together. I have recently joined LotRO and I am having a blast. What I am not doing, however, is rushing to end game, wasting my time on asshats (why, because I don't want anything from the game other than a good time) or focus on bad mechanics (like the fact that if you have collected a quest item before you get the quest it won't let you turn in that item, you have to get a new one...)

If you want to be the great hero of the server, have the best gear, be the most well known, leet dude (I am not saying you are but...) then every one of these games will be the same.

I have changed my attitude towards and expectations of mmos and I am having a blast, like the old days of AC1 and Vanilla WoW.

That is my experience anyway.

& then finish up with "It isn't me, it's the genre that's the problem".

You have to ask yourself what exactly you're looking for? ...could it possibly be time to get another hobby?

hmmm well you did say the upside was that you got to spend time on other things and even got married.

I imagine if you spent 250 hrs as before that would affect those things.

Of course if it did and you ended up hating the game in the long run you would have more time to get married again?

I don't think you're a troll, lots of people, including myself have experienced what you're going through. Maybe a break my do you good... I think it's trying to recapture the newness if when any one of us experienced that first time awesome mmorpg w/ a group of buddies, ... trying to recapture the past will only make you disatisfied w/ future expectations. One of the posters on this site, and I think it was evaasia or something gave me some good advice that I should approach each new mmorpg w/ fresh eyes, and not compare it in trying to capture that past experience." I'm trying that and it seems to be working.

I guess I just needed to not spoil my new experiences w/ past ones as that will only set me up for disappointments due to one never being able to recapture the past. Heh, sounds kind of buddhist... but I'm not though ;0

Been reading this forum for a few years , had to join just to comment on this thread.

Totally agree with OP !! wish i could relive that magical period when Mmorpging in it's infancy and exciting. I too have succumb to lifes unfortunate natural progression of work/marriage/kids yet i still fondly remember those early days in a game called Biosfear ( graphics were laughable , level grind was hardcore as there was no level cap ).

During my now casual gaming time i still look for that mmorpg that will give me the buzz i use to enjoy , alas though i fear it will never happen. These days mmorpgs seem more geared towards cashshops and goldselling bots... the bot thing is simply soul destroying.

Now with constant claims of hacking/cheating/scamming in games and forums it all seems pretty pointless even trying.

Personally i'm glad i had that chance to be a part of early mmorpging when it really was about the journey and the friends you made.

Ah well .. time to put dinner on.

I can understand getting a little weary of MMOs especially considering they are generally just mindless time wasters into which people put WAY too much of themselves.

...but there is no excuse for becoming a troll. Just don't.

I'm well aware that the MMO genre almost certainly will never deliver what it is I want in a game and I have no problem with it. It doesn't stop me from hoping they will but in all reality, the chances are slim to none that I'll ever find a game that actually delivers on what I think MMOs could be. That said, I don't run around starting endless threads on how everyone ought to cater to me like lots of others do, I'm just along for the ride, hoping that someday, a little intelligence might take over the MMO market.

Not holding my breath though. I've got lots of other hobbies to keep me occupied in the meantime.
