Wizard 101 is a good game for kids but its a card based game rather than the standard "hack and slash" type of combat. You can check it out for free if you want to.

I think they are making a parents only room where the kids can drop their mom's and dad's off for an hour, so they can go play.  :)

hehe well I didnt read so much on the age restrictions just at the 1st part of the demo on my 1st link the guy said was for kids 8-12 but aimed at kids of all ages

Are you people truely insane or just go out of your way for poor taste.  A mom and a 4-year old want to play a mmo/mmorpg. To suggest anything remotely mature or anything else other than fusion fall, free realms or legos online, or something else kid friendly is dumb.

I actually laughed at this one. It's always great to see some kids are still growing up with parents that have a sense of humor. :D

I'm gonna throw a foul on the play on that last one.  Elves can, and will get you into trouble mam.

  • Toon town. It will be visually stimulating and a ball to have your child play. If he loves Disney stuff it is an even bigger+. That is going to be your best bet at a great online game to play with your child, or I believe there is this one penguin game that is a bunch of minigames revolving around penguins and you can buy little plush toys that give different game options. Just a thought, but goodluck.

Seriously I don't think MMO are for four year old little kids. There is always violence even in games like Hello Kitty. Your kids will always see and hear things not merely suitable for their ages.

Four years olds should not be taught to kill/attack NPC. Mining, fishing etc are good if they can be presented in an educational way. To protect little kids from improper gestures from other players, games should try something like Quick Chat system in Runescape. But If I had my own four year old kids I wouldn't teach them to kill cows for their hides and chickens for their feathers.

um....nice parenting? you let your 4 year old look at boobs? i can't wait to see how this kid turns out. i feel sorry for him....

i would suggest free realms, but that might not have enough boobs for him. you two could just go to a strip club?

i'm seriously hoping that comment was a joke.

Who are you to judge people ? Do you even have a kid ? Kids start looking at boobs when they are born... hence the breastfeeding.

    Hi everyone,
I came here to research a new game for my son (aka The Monk, age 4) and myself (aka The Mom, age 41) to play together.  I'm reading and researching and overwhelmed, so I thought I'd ask you for suggestions.  We currently are big fans of Wizard 101 but at level 40 or so, we are getting kind of bored and are looking for something new to play.
Things we are looking for in a game:
    1)  Something which does not require a ton of reading to play.  While we do play together, and I read for him, and he can read some himself, he doesn't enjoy a game that requires me to read a ton.  We were trying out Dragonica tonight and it was just too much reading of teeny tiny print for me to make dinner while he played.
    2)  Fighting.  The Monk wants to fight.  He is his fathers son
    3)  Questing.  The Mom wants to quest.
    4)  Something we can play casually but still have fun.  He's four, he's not allowed to play that much and Im a mom and don't have a ton of time to play without him.
    5)  Something where we can do solo play most of the time.  I'm happy to jump in and help people with quests etc, but we aren't in a position to commit to being a part of a group that meets every night from 7-9.   So, especially in the early levels, we need to be able to play by ourselves or with some really loose associations wtih people who just happen to be online at the same time we are.  We do enjoy that other players are real people and do often help other players in wizard 101 but often buy henchmen instead of waiting around to find someone to help us do a quest that really needs assistance.
    6)  The monk likes the following things so any of them would be great:  wizards, magic, the undead,  knights, monsters/creatures, pets/animals, space, aliens, robots (he's my geek in training).
    7)  The monk is abnormally unafraid of scary monsters.  Monsters are no problem.
    8) .  We'd like to be able to customize our character a little. Guilds, races, variety of people/creatures might be something the Monk would like.
    9)  A good story.  We often "play" Wizard 101 in the car on the way to school, where we are characters in that world. I'd like a game where we can take enough away from it that its something we can pretend later.
    10)  We are happy to pay for the right game.
Things we do NOT care about: PVP (never done it), Graphics (3d would be nice, but other than that..) , kid controls (I'm right there, he's safe, and heck, he can't read those kind of words anyway)
I'm currently considering Bright Shadows, Everquest (played that before he was born), Guild Wars, Dungeons and Dragons Online but your suggestions are VERY welcome!!

Thanks so much for reading and for your help!!

If you cant play Dragonica together (whitch i think was just a button mashing side scrolling mmo) i dont know what. Just skip the text lol.

Stop calling your son The Monk its weird.

Yeah, I don't even know how the human race survived all these hundreds of thousands of years with every human baby being exposed to those dangerous, poisonous boobs for so many months after being born.  I shudder to think that even I was forced to drink from such a foul source of supposed "nourishment" during my early childhood.

Now that we have artificial means of nursing babies (via baby bottles) I think every woman should have them surgically removed the moment they start growing during puberty, that way none of us have to ever see them again.  I can't imagine what must go through a woman's mind every day when she showers and has to look down at that tremendous source of shame and embarrassment.  I'm continually surprised at how many women are able to muster up the courage to step outside their house.  I now see why women in the Middle East go to such trouble to hide their entire bodies when they go out in public.

I hope you are trying to be funny(and failed) because that is one of the biggest misconceptions about video games and serial killers because not a single recorded serial killer or even the sniper killers ever touched a video game before they went nuts, that is a fact. There is only one pair of nutcases that ever played a video game and that was the two teens at the columbine shooting and even then it's been said they were more motivated by the matrix movie than the games they were known to play.

Anyhow, this thread has gone downhill quick. She asked a simple request without comments from the peanut gallery about who they think are good parents or not. Those posters need to get a grip and get over listening to themselves talk.

WoW is not a good community anymore so I would not suggest it for family fun entertainment due to the high amount of griefing and flaming in any chat channel there on nearly any server that I have seen before I stopped playing WoW after 2 1/2 yrs. I would not suggest EQ2 either due to the same reasons and the low populated servers being full of mostly elitist jerks who spend their time bragging about their status or how long they have been in EQ and if you don't worship them you get blacklisted for quest groups, sad I know.

    I would suggest these mmo's personally;

    1) Lord of the Rings Online - Great community and more mature than most due to a lot of families playing it. There is some reading involved for game story background information but not heavy reading for quest instructions.

    2) Bright Shadow - Due to great family friendly and fun content. Somewhat simplified and cartoonish so might get bored of it quickly like Wizard 101 but a good time burner.

    3) Guild wars -  Instanced quests allows for less griefing and casual gameplay content is great for families who always have random things pop up and need to go afk. Great graphics and good solo content if needed.

Overall, I hope she was able to get some good ideas out of the thread despite the uncalled for flaming by some of the posters.

Not only are cows and chickens useful for cooking, hides and feathers can be used to teach crafting, fletching, fishing among other things too. It can be educational to teach kids who can tell what are real and fiction. It is hard to tell four year old kids Barney and Santa Claus are not real, let alone killing peaceful animals can be good deeds. It is a different story when you explain why you want to kill cows and chickens to seven year old kids. That’s why different rating systems such as MPAA and ESRB are established to aid consumers in selecting movies and digital games and such.

Among tens of thousands games and educational software rated by ESRB, none of the online games are rated EC (suitable for kids aged 2-10). The next rating category for older kids is E (mostly suitable kids aged 6+) and you won’t find many online games other than the social ones like Club Penguin in that category. Most of the MMO are rated E10 (10+) or T (teens).

There are no EC rated MMO according to ESRB. It is not just my own opinion.

Of course, ESRB and MPAA help you to make your selection of movies and games but you don’t have to follow them. If you think killing and violence are ok for four year olds then Runescape is one game that does it differently to ensure kids aren’t exposed to things that are not suitable for them with their Quick Chat worlds. Four year old kids mostly can’t even type. Letting them to select what to say from a preset selection of sentences is an excellent unique feature.

Other MMO that can be good for four year old kids if you accept mild violence are mainly social games designed mainly for children. You can pretty much trust brand name products from Disney so Club Penguin should be OK.
