A World With out World of Warcraft

Now, Blizzard is an undisputed king of the MMO world. As i scroll through the game list waiting for my time card on WoW to expire i thought to myself, "What would the development of the MMO industry would be today with out world of warcraft?" I am bored of WoW i hit 80 and that was enough for me, but others love the game, and i also heard a report from blizzard that they hit the climax of subscribers in 2008. So in a world with out warcraft not to far away? How would have our lives and society been changed if blizzard hadn't made this multi billion dollar game. Who would be the king of the industry today if it was not blizzard.

People would still care about roleplay...because only "core" gamers would still be playing.

We would go on and on about "Ultima clones" and such.

It would be exactly the same, but the exact opposite.

The question is who will be its successor...

Why does there need to be one?

There hasn't been a successor to Michael Jordan since he retired but the NBA is better than ever nowadays.

I'd say brilliant, but I'm bias (I hate WoW).  I have to agree with John on this  one, It'd have a different emphasis, probably roleplaying, but would still have all the cookie cutter MMO's only clones of a different game, rather than WoW.

I think it'd be more like Everquest clones rather than Ultima clones, even without WoW someone would have still went with modifying EQ's system over Ultima's. Blizzard wasn't the first company to realize that better graphics equals more appealing, and more appealing equals wider audience.

Right about the time that World of Warcraft came out, SOE was pretty sure that it was the king of the block, and that it was going to remain the king of the block. They were releasing Everquest II, and there was every indication that they had no fear of being pulled down from being the big kid. WoW came out of nowhere and pretty much overran everyone.

So, if WoW had never come about, I'm pretty sure that Everquest would have been leading us all into the next generation of MMORPGs, and we'd probably all be embracing microtransactions and bad customer service. Even the architecture of EQ2 gave an indication that SOE had no intentions of honoring its players, but mainly honoring its own game, as it made some very direct changes to playstyle, expecting players to kowtow or get lost, not realizing that there would be something for them to get lost in as they were making their release.

    lol what?!

and to the OP. the mmo genre would be in a much better state if WoW never existed.  I hate WoW with a passion.  Ive played it because all my friends got addicted to it.   I ask them why constantly and their response is "it's easy". coming from guys who were uo and eq1 vets that busted their balls to achieve greatness in those games.

now they are all lazy fucks that play wow and dont have to really play to do shit.

last night i was at his house watching his little brother play wow, they added a feature in game that you can just click and it forms a group for you in random dungeons with random people across every server.  so now you dont even have to talk to anyone to get a group or do shit.

and when he ran the dungeon with his unknown teammates not 1 fuckin person said shit!!!! they just silently zerged through the dungeon, needing every item that dropped since nobody would ever see each other again.  WTF IS THE POINT OF PLAYING THEN!?

absolutely no social interaction, no needing to even try. just click a button and wait.  absolutely pathetic.

    WoW needs to be destroyed

Erm, what happened to your other thread?

I said it before, I'll say it again: We'd all be complaining about UO clones (as john just mentioned), wishing for something different. Though I do doubt that MMOs would be as mainstream, which is good in some people's opinion and bad in others' (I fall in the latter).

What isn't understood about what I said?

I was going to respond to another person from the other thread but it's changed.... hm...

But what this person said (in a nutshell) was that, there's pretty much no sense of accomplishment in WoW. Back in the day, you'd see someone running around in a different game with a really nice looking weapon or armor and wonder "Man, I wonder what they had to go through to get that". In WOW, you don't have to do anything, just keep queuing up for dungeons, and run the same dungeons hundreds of times till you get enough emblems to get all the gear you need to run the final raids in the game... There's no more going through any of the other raids to acquire great rewards to help complete the next raids, it's all purchased now and it's extremely easy to gear your characters up.

I know people are going to argue "Well you had to keep grinding the same bosses to get your stuff" well.... I'd rather do that than mindlessly grinding the same easy regular dungeons with this dungeon finder, with elitest jerks who think they're better than everyone else who doesn't have the gear they have. As someone said in this thread the dungeons are just mindless zergfests.

I still play, but I've been desperately keeping my eyes open and trying new mmo's in hopes to find one that really gets me away from this.  I only play when I set a personal goal for myself to accomplish, and after I accomplish that goal (i.e. get epic flying, get this character to 80, etc.), I quit playing again.  But the game now, is nothing more than a queue waiting list.  Everyone stands around in the Capitals and waits for queue's to pop for BG's or dungeons, whichever.  The ONLY interaction people have in this game are either stupid mom jokes, how stupid someone is for asking a question that everyone expects you should already know, the occasional profession looking for work, and raid PUGs, THAT'S IT, there is NO community in WOW.

This game also has no factions......   If you're on the alliance or horde, you're still not on a side, there is no incentive to actually hate the opposing faction, everyone hates everyone that's not in their guild.  While I AM playing, and I see someone asking for help on a quest, even if I'm not on the quest, I'll help them.  No one helps anyone do anything that doesn't directly benefit themselves in PvE, and as far as PVP goes, the Arenas are PATHETIC... having factions fighting within themselves is the most broken thing I've ever heard in trying to have different factions battling for superiority.  All this does is turn the community against itself and then it's just a big competition of "You're not as good as me we're kicking you because your gear sucks"  Instead of having the mentality of maybe "Hey, since you need gear, we have no problem helpin you through this instance to maybe get somethin for yourself."

So all in all, my opinion on this thread would be that WoW, which did start off great and gave the MMO community something really special, has found a way (regardless of 11.5 mil subs)  to screw it up at the same time.  And when I play, the only people I see playing are people who are mindless robots and love the game because of how great their character is.

Sorry this post turned into more of a wow bashing than anything else, just had to vent a few frustrations of why I think this game is bad for us as a whole.  Makes me look forward to games that are trying something different:  SW: ToR, and WoDOL
