MMO's on I-pad/I-phone

Lord.BachusLord.Bachus Member RarePosts: 9,686

Will it be fun to play an MMO on an Ipad (which is a large I-phone to me)

I'd love to see someone try an MMO on I-pad, this needs to be an MMO with a very clean user interface. like EQ or GW or even Spellborn (if they can add decent content).  But not a game like WoW requiring moren then 12 buttons/abbilities as this would clutter the whole screen.

I'd really love to see someone port an old MMO to I-pad.  Nothing like sitting in my chair with a pad and gaming.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are coming to iphone soon, not MMOs obviously but still exciting!

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

Netbooks will be replaced by touchscreen solutions before you can blink your eyes... Next to that EQ allready runs smooth on a Netbook. And even WoW runs on the more advanced ones. Netbooks do not differ from normal PC's except for the fact that they have absolutely NO dedicated hardware for gaming (Low speed CPU, no graphics solution, low memmory) And so netbooks make the worst platform for gaming.

I-pad is not much different hardware wise tough, but they have a new and fresh interface and don't give the feeling of being a wattered down PC but the feeling of an UPgraded I-phone.

The big chance for an old MMO to revive on I-phone is to start on new servers. Which will give the game a fresh new start.

I don't get you people. If you want to play games, buy a console to play games on. The DS has a touchscreen, there you go.

However, there are all sorts of people crying out for all sorts of shooters and such on iPhone and I don't see how that's appealing at all.

The iPad is just a bigger iPod Touch aimed at being an e-Reader rather than a music device. I don't envy anyone dropping the $500 for it. I'm happy with my laptop.

Really, the iPad is just small enough to not count as a laptop, but just big enough to not fit in anyone's pocket. What's the point?

So you are one of those people that has an mobile phone on their belt, an MP3 player in their left pocket, a pocket camera in their right pocket and their nintendo DS in the pocket of their jacket.

i am a huge fan of all in one devices, and the Iphone is just the rigth size to play games on the road, while the ipad is just the right light size to play the same game on a sunny day in my garden.

For the living room, i'd love to play the same game on a console or PC (but not netbook or laptop)

So if apple designs a system to play my Iphone/ipad games on their Macs too (mini mac replacing console), then its perfect.

A really fun, old school MMO is out for all itouch / iphone / ipad generations. Its called Graal online. Its alot of fun. Its an old 2D sandbox, it has updates almost daily! You can get it for free to try it out. If you end up liking it you can get the full version for 2 bucks!

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

Besides Graal, which is pretty fun, there is another MMO called Anrufen. It reminds me more of UO in terms of looks. The game is free but has premium zones, which you can pay a monthly fee to access.

I love the concept of MMO and online games on the phone. Sometimes when I'm playing Skies of Glory or other online games, I always marvel at the fact that I'm playing on my phone against people hundreds and even thousands of miles away. Pretty crazy.

The thing i don't like about Anrufen is that you simply click on a monster and wait for the fight to end, with the exception of pressing a skill now and then =/

True but that's how most MMOs are anyway. Besides that, there really aren't a lot of options as far as iphone MMOs go. There are really like 2 real MMOs. 3, if you count Aurora Feint II as an MMO, although it's mostly a puzzle game.

I found some more iphone MMOs currently in development.

be careful what ones you download - there are some really bad ones and they're all exactly the same except for a change in name and slightly different graphics - you'll know them when you see them, Vampire ones, Kingdom ones... try them if you want, but they're a rip off and are basically stats and nothing else. I'm waiting for a really good MMO to come out, but sadly people seem more interested in making money with IPhone apps rather than something original and decent.

I know how you feel. What I do is I just download games that I'm familiar with and if I want a game which I can play to pass the time I download RPG games.

Xenome is currently going to be two single player RPGs, with a follow-up MMO later in the year. The combat system is very like an MMO in the single player game, which is about to enter beta.

Kind of like a portable SWG and WoW meets Borderlands/Fallout

I would never be able to game on a touch screen device such as an iPad...

I have an iPod Touch and that thing gets smudged up quickly and annoys the crap out of me. I would go insane with the iPad and gaming...

*Tap the skill, wipe the screen.... Loot the mob, wipe the screen.... Level up, wipe the screen...*

3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Yeah, until it breaks and you lose 3, 4, or 5 devices instead of 1.

I am a fan of the all-in-one device as well, but I am not sure that the iPad is that device.

As far as portable devices go, I have a droid phone, iPod Touch, Kindle 2, MSI netbook, and a ASUS Gaming/Work/CADD laptop.  I do not believe that the iPad would be able to replace any of these devices except the Kindle 2.  I have to have a smartphone/portable MP3 player.  I also need my netbook and laptop to be an open system (Windows or Snow Leopard), flash capable, able to use network cable instead of wireless, and able to plug into and run other devices (dvd-roms, external hard drives, switches, etc.).  It would also be nice to be able to tether the iPad to an iPhone.  Customers should not have to buy 2 Apple data plans.

I am hoping that Apple will see the writing on the wall and let their next generation iPad run Mac OS X.  I have always liked their products, even if they are a little overpriced.

But you also only paid a few hundred for the 1 device instead of a few hundred for each :)

I just don't like draining my phone battery.

I have put some thought into mmos on smartphones for some time now. I was thinkning it would be a good thing to offer a bit of connectivity of multiple platforms for a single game. Let me just use a mmo generic as an example. A person plays generic on their home pc, but what do they do when they are out for a while but still would like to be able to interact with people in the game. Why not have an app on one of the smart phones be it an iphone or android that allows for chat and maybe management options.

So you could maybe do some work in the auction house or other game market that is available while out. Don't have to worry about not being able to bid on that special item any more. Other things would be maybe managing guild services and members such as prmotions. Transfering funds to other players. And of course the ability to chat with other players from your phone.

Many more things I feel could be incorperated into an app even maybe professions, just simple things though that can normally done though in game menus. This could allow players to do the more mondane and technical things while away, and then free up more time to play the game and do combat and other enjoyable things while on their home pc.

Fallen Earth sets the standard here with their coming iPhone app, with crafting, acution house, chat and many more features: http://www.massively.com/2010/03/30/pax-2010-a-closer-look-at-the-fallen-earth-iphone-app/

This is nice for current Fallen Earth players on PC, to have portable interactivity with their game.

But there are legit MMO's in development specifically for those devices that have all that and more (PvE, PvP, etc.), which aren't just a dabble into the game, but the game itself.

Unfortunately, right now, one good, well-developed app is buried by 1000 cookie-cutter turds, which makes it hard for anything to rise out of the stink...

I don't know of any good mmo's on the iphone yet.   However, keep watch on www.toucharcade.com and one might come up.  When I bought my iphone I noticed how there was tons of crap games, with a few VERY good games hidden inbetween.  After searching the web over and over for what games are good, I found that site.  I believe it's also the main iphone gaming site for the developers to announce and promote their new stuff.  It's great.
