PC vs PS3 vs Xbox360 - question

LasastardLasastard Member Posts: 604

 Hi folks,

I've recently re-discovered my interest in FPS-type games, after having my free time cut short by work and social liffe. Also, I am experiencing an increasing lack of interest for the current crop of MMOs.

Specifically, I started playing Modern Warfare 2 on the PC and was intrigued of the single player campaign as well as enjoyed the Multiplayer (in parts, anyway). When comparing the gfx with the abundant youtube videos from Xbox gamers, I found that my PC system (dual core, Radeon 4850, 4GB Ram, WIndows7) didn't look that much better than the console version (or so it appears, anyway). Games like the upcoming BF:Bad Company 2 seem to be ported from consoles to PC and look quite gorgeous on consoles from what has been shown so far.

With a new HD flatscreen TV in the living room, I was thus wondering if I should perhaps move my casual gaming from the PC (for which an update would be due soon) to consoles.

I find it hard however to figure out which of the two (Xbox, PS3) to get and whether they are a good replacement for PC gaming (assuming I would stick to FPS/Adventure type of games).

From a technical point of view, Xbox and PS3 seem to be fairly head-to-head. I have yet to see footage from the PS3 that looked significantly better than the xbox, and vice versa. So I am more concerned with online features, future growth and multimedia at this point.

PS3 has a build-in wifi module and online gaming is, mostly, free.

Xbox has no build-in Wifi (does it have an ethernet port for wired connection?) and online play costs 50 bucks/year.

The PS3 plays BlueRays and does a good job at that, the Xbox can only play DVDs and apparently makes quite a bit of noise

However, it still seems that the Xbox is doing much better in sales than the PS3 and has more exclusives?

Well, you can probably see where I am going here and it would be interesting to hear your opinions.

The ps3 has the better exclusives but xbox live will give you the better overall experience for online gaming.

About the sales, according to vgchartz xbox360 sold 38.09 million and ps3 31.82 million.

PS3 has more future growth capability, but I don't know if developers are going to use that.

360 still has stability issues.. but imo, better selection of games overall.  I have both, and play on them pretty much equally. I prefer the PS3 though, but in the end I don't think one is better than the other.

Uncharted 2 for PS3 is the GOTY, so if you like adventure games... there's also Massive Action Game for PS3. I played the open beta for a while and liked it. FPS in a console environment, with RPG elements.. not bad.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I would never leave the PC platform, its still the best for FPS.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Other than MMO's (which I currently sub to none) ive been playing only PS3 since last fall.  The Mass Effect games arnt available for PS3 but other than that I cant think of any xbox exclusives I personally miss on PS3.  As was mentioned the 360 still has failure issues and I also weighed that factor when deciding which to buy.  I do remember thinking the original xbox felt better than the ps2 for shooters but how that is with this generation of consoles I cannot say.  PS3 doesnt have the number of RPG's that the PS2 did but im quite happy with the system and the games available. I like the " hack and slash" games a lot and the God Of War games are considered some of the best of that genre.

Each platform has it's pros and cons.

A platform purchase is an investment.

I would personally do my own extensive research before selecting one.

In response to games look equal across platforms. There has been huge talk about the recent images and videos revolving Final Fantasy 13 which is undeniably better on the PS3 than it is X-Box. IF you enjoy FPS I would really suggest picking up the PS3 for MAG alone. You also have Killzone 2 and the Resistance series which are both incredible games!

  • LasastardLasastard Member Posts: 604

    Thanks for all the replies!

Some interesting things to get me started for sure. MAG was in fact on my (extended) list of Pros for the PS3, looks like a cool game. Wasn't aware that the Xbox failure rate was still an issue, thought I read somewhere they finally got a handle on that, mh.

personally i'm not interested in consoles, mainly because i'm a strategy fan and not interested in the games released on ps3/xbos/wii

however i would suggest that along with everything else you go to some gaming website to see what is available to play on the two

and why not go into a shop and  try the consoles out, best way to see how they look and feel, most places seem to have a setup for you to try as it boosts sales

I'm like PC gaming the best mainly because of Mods.   My xbox has been collecting dust for a while and its had the RROD 2 times but It seems to be ok now after I did some modifications to the cooling.  Id maybe get a ps3 now that they are cheaper, but im sure Id never really use for more than a blue ray player since Ive really seen no games that have sparked my interest besides FF13 which is on xbox as well.

PC is the most customizable. I don't feel a need to say any more.

PS3 has the best networking (takes the least bandwidth when gaming in my experience) and the power to have lifelike graphics (I refer you to Heavy Rain, which has better graphics than even the PC has churned out) and you never have to worry about graphics.

The 360 has the best community features, and arguably the best library for online games of any console (PS3 only has a few like MAG, White Knight Chronicles, and Demon's Souls currently) however it costs monthly and it takes up more bandwidth when playing Halo than most MMOs do, all the while paling in graphical capabilities to the PS3.

    Does that answer your question?

The pc versions of games look better and are easier to move around in with point and click but the consoles are a more stable piece of hardware and its a heck of a lot more comfortable kicking back with your feet up playing on a console. It is all about preference though. I have games that play better on a pc and games that play better on a cosnole.

This is one of the reasons why I consider consoles. I spend 8h a day sitting in a chair in front of a computer, so gaming with my feet up on a couch sounds nice ;) Also, most titles I have been interested in recently all came out on consoles, sometimes even before they were released on PC (e.g. Assassins Creed 2).

well i have all 3 consoles and tbh, in my opnion, PC and PS3 over the 360.

I've had my 360 for about 3 years now and yes its very good however it does lack behind the graphics in game to game comparisons with the PS3 - i think if you check out Gamespot they had a good article and showed the difference in fact between all 3 platforms and 360 looked the worse.  The good thing about the 360 is xbox live but having said the PS3 online experience has improved massively from the early beginnings.  Games are now coming out on the 360 and the PS3, each have their own exclusives - Halo, Forza for example are on the 360.

PS3 i think is the best casual gaming console around at the moment, couple of reasons - it has Blu-Ray so saves money in buying a seperate Blu-Ray player, it has better graphics over the 360 and again it has its own exclusives - Metal Gear, Gran Turismo (if it actually ever gets released lol), Uncharted, MAG for example.   The online experience is fine to be honest, I've been playing some FIFA10 online and not had any problems whatsoever - seems alot of PS3 owners haven't bothered buying a wireless headset either so means you are not constantly getting annoyed at 12 year olds screaming as is the case in most 360 games when you go online.

PC Gaming nowadays is mostly for simulation games like Flight sims, ship sims, FPS games I much prefer on the PC due to the more accurate mouse and keyboard, and of course PC owns the MMO arena.  The downside i suppose for the PC market at the moment is that most of the titles are multi-platform releases so you typically don't gain anything by getting it on the PC over the consoles and it is pretty much a straight port so graphically going to be the same more or less.   For MMO's yes the PC still rules the waves but in every other aspect of gaming, and it pains me to see it happening, the PC is fading away because consoles have caught up graphically to what your average PC can do.   Oh nearly forgot, seems to be the new in thing with PC game releases that they be registered via Steam - Empire Total War being a prime example of you having to have Steam - so if you don't like your internet being plugged in all day while you play games then this is small downside.

If you are after a casual gaming console i would get the PS3, afterall you can watch Blu-Rays on it on your new hi-def TV and play games and you aren't going to be disappointed.

OP I would take anything these people say with a grain of salt.

Seriously, people claiming to own all three platforms yet blast one into the ground? yeah... ok.

Most of these people are just lying to make their platform of choice seem like the right one of you.

Like i said in my earlier post do you own research, check out game lists, console features.

All the platforms have pros that require more looking into. 360 with its superior live service, games like Mass effect, GoW and Halo. PC has awesome mmos, Fps/rpgs with mod communities and RTS games. PS3 has awesome games like MGS4, Infamous and UC2, free net play,a blue ray player. I personally love all my platforms but took a long time researching before I bought each one.

If i listened to these guys I would have bought a Wii......

Don't listen to these guys, check out other sites, professional sites and more.

Xbox live really isn't that much better then the PSN nowadays, and while i have both consoles the PS3 is the one i would most likely buy games for - better graphics for one thing and i prefer some of the sony title lineups, im not blasting the xbox cos i play Pro Evo on a weekend with mates.

However it all depends on what you want to do, and perhaps the biggest factor - what consoles do your friends have, pointless getting a PS3 if all your friends own a 360 cos bang goes your late night gaming sessions online.  Also depends on questions like:

    are you bothered about Blu-Ray?

do you think you would ever want to play Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet, Uncharted etc?

are you more into playing Forza, Gears of War, Halo etc?

those are questions only the original poster can answer, we can all give opinions on whats good and whats not but end of the day its your choice which one you opt to buy.  Also don't forget that rumours are going around that the next xbox will be released end of 2010 or early 2011 depending on which websites you browse, so if you want a 360 why not hang on until the new one is out?

as i say, i got the PS3 cos i wanted to watch Blu-Ray movies not primarily to play games on but as i have quite a few friends with 360's, game wise, if it were a game that i was going to go online and play i would buy it on the 360 if my mates were getting the same game as well.

Like i said it's really something you have to think about. so many nice features on every platform.

I owned a 360 first while that platforms exclusives rocked face. Also since i already made an investment with xbla and my gamer score i felt no need to buy a ps3 and start over.

I waited until an exclusive came around that I just couldn't say no to (Infamous) and pick up a ps3. While i still buy every multiplatform game on my 360 (for the achievements/gamer score investment) I enjoy my Ps3s blue ray player and 8-10 exclusives that I replay here adn there.

As for PC gaming. I'm a big mod community fan and I just love mmos (obviously) and last but certainly not least Rts games.

Addition: Oh and not every multi-platform game runs better on PS3. Fallout 3 is extremely hiccupy on ps3, DA:O runs better on 360 and ever try bayonetta on ps3? blahh

Performances issues on certain versions usually has me renting them first but still the PS3 is not the clear cut winner when it comes to multi-platform gaming.

Which is a shame really considering it is on paper the superior console were tech is concerned.

I owned a 360 until it went out for the 2nd time.

Then I bought a PS3 and am glad I did. I am mainly a PC gamer and have been for a long time, but I very much enjoy my PS3, much more so than 360.

As for exclusives, IMO buying the xbox for that is not worth it, considering if you own a PC many of them, Like mass effect 2, will be available on PC as well.

Plus Blue ray player, wifi, free online multiplayer in most games. Easy choice for me.

    just My 2cp

     Hi folks,

thanks again for all the feeback! I agree, it depends on a number of factors. Personally, I am leaning towards the PS3 now - BlueRay being one reason. The others are that most console titles I find interesting these days are available on both, so you know, whatever. I was concerned a bit about the quality of the PS3 online experience, but I am gathering that this has been largely fixed now? So that shifts me further towards that platform.

A new generation of consoles being on the horzion may however delay my decision - if that is really the case. Didn't even  realize that xbox 360 has been around for so many years already. hmhm...

According to the web the xbox 720 would ship *sometime* in 2011 - and then I guess it will take a while for developers to actually produce a significant number of games for it. PS3 seems to be around for a few years to come too, from what I could find. I suppose that is not soon enough to postpone a purchase.

We wont see the next generation of consoles until 2012 at the very least.

This generation of consoles were designed with a much longer life than previous generations.

I would definitely choose PS rather than having a console with 3 red lights on it...

well i have also had that problem and ive had a problem with my PS3, heres how i found the tech support line:

MS - we will get UPS to pick it up and it will get delievered to Germany and then sent back to you.  Took 14 days for me to get it back.

Sony - will arrange a courier, who will deliver new one and take old one away. Took 1 day for me to get a new one.

That alone points towards Sony being better on service.  And the 3 red lights is still a major issue on the 360 no matter what version you buy.  PS3 has been around for awhile but doesn't seem to have that many problems when compared to MS's 1 billion $ cockup.

I own the 360 and the PS3. I prefer the PS3, because the games look better on it, and it plays Blue-Rays, which look outstanding compared to DVD's.

The Wi-Fi is rather unreliable and I wouldn't consider it really when choosing. I always get server timeouts while trying to create an account. I also don't go online for both my 360 and PS3.

  • maskedweaselmaskedweasel Member LegendaryPosts: 12,195

I own all three consoles, and a PC.

I use my 360 for the majority of my gaming.  My PS3 is really just my glorified BluRay player,  and my wife uses it as such much more then I use it for games.

My 360 has lasted pretty well, and I ended up buying a second one to stream netflix on, now that they're super cheap (before the PS3 had this functionality).  I bought one at a pawn shop for 100 bucks with a hard drive, and it works well.  My wife loves it, though now I spend 100 dollars a year for both our  systems to be on at the same time.

    But I digress...

As a matter of preference, I enjoy my 360... I buy many of my games for 360 instead of PS3 or PC (and of course the wii, which only has so many uses right now).  The only real reason is because of accessibility.  If the wife is in one room, I can go to another and still play. Altogether games don't change drastically as far as playability is concerned.  You may get a better frame rate on a PC, and even better graphics,  but my computer chair is a pain to sit in, and i would hardly call it relaxing having my wrist and arm creased by the edge of my desk while I click away.  I get that enough with MMOs.

While we're on the topic of MMOs,  if you're looking into a future MMO-Console market,  the PS3 would be your better choice.. now that Square Enix is creating the new FF for it, and DCUO and The Agency are also scheduled to launch on the PS3 this year or next.  Not sure what Microsoft will end up supporting, but if your the kind of person who looks into that stuff, you may want to keep that in mind.

  • Merlin1977Merlin1977 Member Posts: 168

another downside of the 360 is the cost of the wireless adaptor which you must purchase seperately to the console which adds another £60 onto the price, whereas the PS3 has it built in, meaning that the 360 when you take into consideration that fact works out more expensive - you also must pay for your Live experience, gold anyway which you need if you want to play games with your friends, and thats another £40 for 1 year and then recurs every year.  Pretty much you are doubling the cost of the console when you take into account those 2 things along, so if price is an issue for the OP you might want to take that into consideration as well.

Meant to mention that in my first post but totally forgot about it until someone mentioned the wifi, of which i have had no problems whatsoever on either console.
