I've played tons of MMO's in the past starting with EQOA. I am most likely looking for a PvE oriented game to hold me over until FFXIV. I have played both EQ2 and LOTRO, and enjoyed both, but eventually returned to WoW because of having many RL friends to play WoW with.
My brief thoughts on LOTRO (I have a 32 minstrel):
- Love the LOTR universe
- Enjoyed the story missions
- Beautiful graphics, and pretty smooth combat (though combat seems simple and nothing revolutionary)
My brief thoughts on EQ2 (I have a 33 Templar, 28 Monk):
- Also love the EQ universe (first MMO was EQOA so i have a softspot for it)
- Tons of content, and still have a lot to learn about the game
- Many interesting classes
- Has a bit of a dated feel.
My plan is to casually enjoy the ride to max level. Once I get there I may or may not raid...depending on my availability and if i'm still enjoying the game. Please help an indecisive man out! Your thoughts are appreciated.

I've played both, and honestly I prefer LotRO.
The new skirmish system helps fill in the XP gaps most people hit in the 30's, and you can earn some neat cosmetic type items.
Also, I think I can help make the decision a little easier ... Check your PMs!

You really can't go wrong, the main factor is community which lotro has more and better quality of and then end-game which EQ2 with the raiding takes lotro down.
I've been considering this exact dilemma. I posted the same question a few days ago, but only received one response =(
I tried LotRO and the combat just felt uninteresting to me. I'm in the midst of trying EQ2, but I just don't know which one to invest in.
eq2 is a beeter game but 3 problem arise from this game
1:gamma setting
2;brightness setting
3 graphic setting
the first 2 are the worst since there is no gage to make sure your properly set like the game warhammer
for graphic setting its less painefull just lower distance of everything to min then rise slowlly till fps is around 35 fps
but gamma and brightness is the main issue
soe need to add white chess looking gage for gamma and add black chess thing for brightness
right now whatever you set it at it always look bad since there is no baseline of anykind
you ll get same issue with lotr!
only war doesnt have this issue since there are baseline gage in place to make sure you setting is proper for the screen you have or for the eyes you have
LOTRO feels pretty polished but EQ2 seems to have more depth and is a bit more intriguing. Still can't decide haha.
LOTRO gave me the feeling of being in a real world with events going on that seemed have an impact. It always seems believable and thus gave a real feeling of immersion. The whole world seemed to be in unison with itself and worked to pull me into the gameplay through its story telling.
EQ2 only seemed to give that same feeling, but only in very small doses and even those were very disconnected. There was always something going on the pulled my attention away from playing the game to make me focus on some mechanics or just poor gameplay element.
For that reason alone I would recommend LOTRO.
EDIT: If you do decide to try EQ2, do some research fist before you start. There are some "wrong" choices that a new player can make that really seem to have long term effects on a decent experience. Research what class you are going to play, because there are classes that go unwanted or less desirable in groups/raids. Research what server you are going to play on. Most current players can give you an honest recommendation on which are good and which should be avoided.
Personally, I could never get into LOTRO, so I can't give you a fair perspective.
EQ2, is a super fun game with loads of content. The complete lack of any community is what made me stop playing.
For me they are both good games and both get on my nerves after a while.
For lotro what drives me away is the seemingly endless supply of bears boars and wolves i have to combat. Gets boring.
For eq2 what drives me away is john smedly and how inept he is at embracing his cients and trying to earn a profit through excellent gameplay instead of nickle and diming.
If you are equally torn, flip a coin. Seriously. Go random and enjoy!
Both are good games, I would recommend EQ2 however, if nothing else then because of EQ2 have a better endgame.
But you wouldn't do bad with LOTRO either.
For me Lotro has the better world design, graphics and story..
EQ2 has the better gameplay/combat
I am still wayting for the(my) ultimate MMO
-AoC graphics
-Lotro stories and Book quests
-Some of DDO's Quest dungeons
-EQ2's guild system and housing
-Vanguards Crafting and diplomacy
-Freerealms mini games, race games
-WoW size and sheer number of instances and raids
-WoW's random dungeon finder
-DAoC PvP (more then 2 sides)
-Warhammers public quests
-EQ's open world dungeons and raid mobs
-Spellborns rolling combat bar and FPS mechanisme
- FF XI class system (triple classes)
And all this based on a strong IP like "Forgotten Realms" based with some great AI... and with a $15 monthly subscription and no ingame itemshop, but a merchandise shop that lets you buy relal life replica's from you ingame stuff , pets and archeivements.
All i want to say, i recognise your feelings, i have it with every game out there.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
