Winter Olympics

So anyone at vancouver? Seems like the place is stacked as hell there, if Canada wins it would be amazing seeing people flip out there haha. I'll be there for the opening ceremony, they say there gonna do something that's never been done before so we'll see how that goes.

I've never really been one to get excited about events such as the Olympics, or concerts, you know... that kinda stuff...  Sure I'll look forward to the World Cup Soccer coming up but I'm not overly excited.  In no way am I gonna go and paint my face with the flag of whatever teams country I like or anything like that and it's the same with the Olympics.

I guess I don't really see what the big deal is, or I'm just generally not really interested in sports all that much.  To be honest, if the Olympics came to Toronto rather then Vancouver I'd probably be pissed off at the traffic it would cause on my way to work rather then be excited about the events going on.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

Yeh i used to be like that before as well, hell i didn't even used to watch the superbowl but then i just got into all the sports and now i'm here. Plus olympics aren't that much of who wins for me but rather a social event, some people i haven't seen for over 5 years will be there and just having fun with friends is the main reason im excited although i am quite hyped for the hockey games, those are gonna be definitely fun.

Looks like a luger has died while practicing before the games have even begun.  That's really going to put a damper on the opening ceremonies.  Not to mention the fact that it's warmer up here right now than it is down in Texas.  They're having to truck snow in from the mountains.  I think these strange weather patterns are being caused by El Nino.

I live just a couple hours south of where the Olympic games are being held, but I have no desire to go anywhere near there.  Too much hassle.

Yup, they say it's one of the fastest ludging circuit and there are already a fews complaint.

Meh, I have a bad feeling about it.. 105 million dollars for the slide and a death on the very first day.

Yeh i was quite shocked at the death and i agree conditions here don't seem exactly like what was planned but it seems like there working quite hard to make it a success.

Yeah were sending care packages of snow to the Olympics. Think the last snow fall yesterday is the largest in the DFW(Dallas-Fort Worth) area's history. Got me out of school for a day of wargamming at my local GW. 6-14 inches throughout DFW, I-40 closed in Amarillo(with over a foot of snow), dam global warming ;)

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Opening ceremony ended not too long ago and it was quite amazing, Gretzky lit up the cauldron even though they said he wouldn't yesterday. I was amazed at how big BC place was, literally had thousands upon thousands of people in there and everything was handled quite nicely.

In honor of the Wniter Olympics, I wanted to link a video of the greatest downhill run in the history of downhill skiing.  I saw this live when I was a little boy and was in awe.  It's no less exciting to me to watch today.

Ok, here's the set-up.  The Winter Olympics, 1976.  Innsbruck, Austria.  The downhill run.  Bernhard Russi, of Switzerland, is the defending Olympic Champion and has just completed the course in a blistering time of 1:46.06.  Last in the round of the top 15 is Franz Klammer, skiing in his home country of Austria.  Klammer is the defending World Cup Champion and is 5 years younger than Russi; the old guard vs the new guard as it were.  Russi is considered one of the greatest skiers of all-time, but some are already saying that Klammer will be the greatest of all-time by the time he is done skiing.  He does not want to disappoint his native Austrians.  So he let it all hang out.

Here is his run.  It is preceeded by about a minute or so of spectacular crashes.

    video

Spoiler warning:  You should watch the video before reading this part.  As it turned out, Klammer ran that race so recklessly that he nearly wiped out about five times.  In the end, he edged out Russi by a mere .33 seconds.  He descended 2854 vertical feet (870 meters) at an average speed of 64 mph (103 km/hr).  It was epic.  All other skiers who followed are just pretenders.

Mens 1500m shorttrack was very funny.  Korea about to sweep medals then one of them triped plowing another into the barrier giving the americans 2 medals.

You know those 2 will get shipped to N. Korea as soon as the Olympics are over... hell I think they'll just kick them out of the plane on the way home... hehehehe.

Wasn't that last video I posted intense?  Man, what a rush!  I'm in the mood for another pulse-pounding, action packed, edge of your seat, nail biter.  Ok, here we go.

    Fasten your seatbelts

Whoo!  That's crazy stuff right there.

I like the sport since it shows precision and strategy.

Oh, I love curling.  I actually think it's exciting to watch.  I just thought I'd have a little fun with its reputation as a boring sport.

  • Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

I never found curling interesting but Canada seems to be doing good in it so i'll watch it lol.

Maybe I should have posted this video for your benefit.  I really wanted to because I think it starts out great.  But as a critic, I have to say that the story really falls apart at the end.
