Among the changes it will be looking to make are the addition of more optional downloadable items and weapons to purchase, as he feels that Final Fantasy XI did not have enough.
The developer is also looking to make it easier for gamers to locate and join the parties of other players of a similar skill level.
Mr Wada said that Activision's hugely popular World of Warcraft represented "tough competition" for its game, but stated his belief that the new Final Fantasy will be a "serious rival".
Fans of the franchise will also be looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII, the new single-player adventure which launches for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March.

No, it won't rival World of Warcraft because Blizzard fanboys only want to play one type of game. A game like FFXIV requires WAY too much brain power than their little peanut-minds can handle.

Yes, I know, because everyone knows that a person can't play both Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft, because then that would make sense and us neanderthal can't grasp the concept that we can actually enjoy both! I must've been in an alternate reality when I played FFXI For 2 years and WoW since Feb of 2005.

Whew. Thanks. It all makes sense now. I've seen the light! Praise you, Mesiah!

Yeah, and people claim to play both EVE and STO and enjoy them both.

    I don't believe them either.

But yours isnt such a stretch, FFXI is a PVE centric game, and at its heart, so is WOW so the two types are pretty compatible.

I was being sarcastic. I personally enjoyed FFXI. I had a Hume Paladin level 61/Warrior level 50 and I loved it. I also love World of Warcraft. I think it's ignorant to assume that people can't enjoy different games. Heck, I played RF Online for a year and that game is all PvP. Why can't people be a fan of more than one game? Who's saying I can't?

Why is it that WoW players cannot possibly fathom that we don't want a WoW clone? Yes we want better gameplay as i agree that's the most important aspect, but we also want the RPG aspect that's been missing recently. That's why we continued to play XI and never jumped ship to WoW. I've said this a hundred times and i'll say it again. WoW players will probably not like XIV, as they've put too much time, effort, and friendships into WoW. They won't like any new game because it's not like WoW. It's just how it is and will be.

I'm not naive enough to think that SE will deliver everything we've been waiting for. I can only hope they've learned their lessons over the years and develop an MMO this time around with some experience under their belt. Sub numbers mean nothing to me as it's been proven time and time again that the masses can be wrong.

No, but you are naive enough to assume that just because it's different than WoW, WoW fans won't like it. I bet you that you will have trouble finding people in World of Warcraft who isn't a fan of at least one Final Fantasy game.

I like RPGs And I like Adventure games, but by your logic, I couldn't play RPG Adventure games. None of that even makes sense.

Heck, I'm not even making sense!

I would say there are probably a lot of WoW fans that like FF, my cousin being one of them.  But one thing I noticed about every other game I tried to get him to play with me, he compared it to WoW since it was his first mmo so he likes it the most obviously.   I can't deny I do the same but it wasn't with my first MMO it was my favorite FFXI. I'm even pretty sure we all fall victim to this with our various favorite MMO's.

You really, really, really need to stop putting everyone into a large pot. Not everyone feels that way and the fact you try to argue a point based on that alone is a very bad idea, especially since you have no fact to support it.

All I'm saying is, please don't sum up people like that. It's rude, especially to people like me who happily enjoy many different types of MMORPGs

like others have said we have heard other mmo's promise to hurt WoW none have yet. I hope he's right game better then WoW would be great for the mmo industry. but until company can back it up after launch i will just say it's another company making alot of hype. plus they didn't dent WoW with FFXI so they will have to do major upgrade to make people even consider it as a threat.

I think we have got a little carried away in this thread with what we want to have been said, and what was actually said.

It was never claimed to a 'WoW Killer', and the specific aim wasnt 'promised to hurt' WoW. The MMORPG market is massive, and there is room for more then one big game. Even the success of a half assed badly supported game like Aion proves that.

They are obviously just looking to score big and are aiming at WoW's kind of numbers.

Tbh, people shouldnt be so worried about this trying to be a 'WoW killer'... they should be worried that the objective of creating a mmorpg with mass appeal for millions dosent lead them down the road of turning it into a solo ez mode quest grinder with pretty looks and a pay to win cash shop and no community.

I think FFXIV will be as successful as FFXI, and that would be pretty damn good for any game.  And I think of success as good gameplay and community, not how many subs it gets. :)

This post is full of win.  FFXIV will be successful but I think that it will not have the broad appeal that WOW brought.  The good news is that they will still make money and the people playing will really be into the game.  Not saying that an ex-WOWer can't or won't enjoy it, just saying that the MMO style of FF will likely not appeal to MOST WOW players.  So no I don't see a rivalry at all.

I don't want it to rival WoW because I don't want WoW's playerbase.  It is bad enough that if I want to play any XBOX 360 game online I have to deal with 12 year olds, but I would really like to avoid the experience in an MMO.

This .. Too many players are way into pvp .. Or at least have a good option to do so.. If pvp isn't offered, many players will more than likely opt for a game that at least offers it..

That said, I'm excited to see what FFXIV has to offer..

Agreed, I know there are plenty of mature adults who enjoy WoW and Live, but I always seem to be stuck with the most obnoxious twelve year olds in the world and it ruined both for me.

I Played WOW for 5 years and I can tell you all now that for the foreseeable future no game will take wow's crown as the king of MMO's. I have left the game but my experience is that most wow players are far to invested on multiple levels to give up the game. Blizzard has created one of the most addicting forms of MMO crack ever put of the market and getting the wow player base to come down off that high is going to be some Herculean task IMO.

According to last weeks MMO report on G4 WoW hasn't seen a increase in subscribers since 08 and a large percentage of their 11 million (or whatever number they claim) are trail accounts and characters never leveled past 10. I think WoW will still be #1 for a long time to come, but I definitely think some people are ready for change and ready for a newer more advanced MMO.

So far just graphically more advanced. No one really knows what FFXIV is gonna be like. My money is on a better graphical version of 11 which means grind grind grind.

  • Second2LastSecond2Last Member Posts: 40

That's true, but I was speaking of more advanced MMO's in general. Not just XIV.

  • pesh131pesh131 Member Posts: 35

Most of the people highly anticipating FFXIV dont WANT a rival to WoW. I'm guessing it will have a big launch, then all of the people with short attention spans and no patience who realize you cant max level in a few days and decide theres "no endgame content" within a week will leave. A good portion of those people being the immature kiddies that play wow. FFXI was an excellent community, not so many beggars and whiners. WoW was easy. They are way different. I look forward to the maturity that FFXI had, the complexity of the game weeds out the crappy people who cant cut it.

I think alot of FFXI fans are expecting/hoping that XIV will be alot like their game.  Especially if it is their first time MMO, often most players constantly searching for that 'First-Time-Experience-Feel'.

I am not sure if FFXIV will give them that feeling, however from what I understand from S.E...   It will be quite different from XI in most aspects.  Which I hope to a degree, you want a game which is new, fresh, and a new concept.

Alot of people complained about the force grouping in XI, however I feel at times that too much freedom limits a game.  Irony!^^

It forced a community, but I feel it had to so there could be a community...  ( I hope I am explaining this right. :) )

In some ways I hope FFXIV keeps some of the negatives that FFXI had, i feel the boundries made it a good game and a good community.

  • AldersAlders Member RarePosts: 2,207

While i am a fan of grouping, i'm also 6 years older than when i started XI. I personally don't have the time i once had to seek for a party for hours on end, and sometimes days. Some sort of balance to allow players to solo and perhaps a group exp bonus to encourage grouping would be ideal. The more option SE gives to us, the longer we'll have something to do and continue to build a solid community.

There also need to be tons of side content other than just leveling, that's worth doing and actually fun. Ballista, Brenner, Chocobo Racing, and Pankration were a huge disappointment in XI. I'm eager to see if SE finally gets the time vs. reward concept.

i understand you. all in all forced grouping was a neccesary evil that built a strong community!
