AoC got two things going for it: state of the art GFX and innovative melee combat. All STO got is customizability, which they just reused from Champions Online, it has no other redeeming quality or potential, none. And for the record AoCs instances are MUCH larger than STOs so it feels a little bit like a world. How is that for irony? A game based on medieval fantasy world is larger than a game based on the vastness of space.
On the con side its yet another fantasy mmorpg. I honestly believe i will never again play one of those, there is only so much any one person can take.
Well, I gave this game as much benefit of the doubt as I possibly could, and did enjoy it for about a week, but now only a few weeks after release, I'm almost at level cap and I'm too bored with the game to bother logging in. It seems Cryptic doesn't know how to make MMORPGs and continues to try to make extremely casual single player games with online elements. The game desperately needs a ton of group content injected into it, but it doesn't appear that Cryptic is even aware that that lack of group content is the biggest problem with the game. Well, it was good for about 2 weeks or so, which is more than I can say for Aion. Shame really, just another unfinished MMOPRG released way too early that will never see it's potential achieved. I predict total game failure in 6 months, the first MMORPG to die so quickly. [Mod Edit]
This is the HUGE fault of making games that cater to speed leveling to level cap.Games should make level cap a thing many months down the road, nobody should be a starfleet commander in a week lmao, totally unrealistic.I quit playing the game rather quickly,i did not leave thinking it was god awful, but at the same time ,i gave it no credit for being any good either.
When i saw every race was using an identical model i nearly quit the game instantly. Then when i started to do the missions or quests whatever they were called,it was boring as heck.I decided that rather than take part in the boring combat i would just run right past the mobs and onto the next quest. Then i soon realized, why the heck am i even playing ,if i feel more like avoiding game play, that taking part lol,so i quit.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

True, I dont intend to play another fantasy game again unless it is revolutionary. However, STO just not being a fantasy MMOG wont be enough.
sounds like somebody didnt bother to group, just because something doesnt force you to group doesnt mean it lacks challenging or fun group play.
also sounds like you didnt bother to pvp, you can pvp in space or ground or both if you like both, lots of hours to be spent grouping to whip pug ass.
see i tried those things when i played it for 2 weeks and you know what, they were nowhere near enough. the group content at the higher levels are boring imo. They arent very well designed at all. Also the pvp in space was teh only pvp i liked because ground combat is horrible in this game imo. How long am i only supposed to play pvp since its the only thing i find fun about the game. This game wasnt constructed well at all, even for casual gameplay. There is no meat and potatoes!
That's an interesting statement about the PvP...I was wondering the same. 3 of My Guildies have been playing STO since launch and always seem to be PvPing when I pop into their Channel. I've played SWG and LOTRO with these guys and they've never been big PvPer's...I'd say on average they would PvP 10-20% of their Gaming time...I just assumed they were running out of things to do...And even though I cancelled My Sub already to that borefest I'm still a bit surprised it's that thin...
I know this much...If Cryptic loses any of those 3 (My Guidies) the Game has ZERO chance long-term because they were about as geeked up as any Trekie can get at Launch...One of them was asking Me about AoC last night...We'll see I guess...
Yeah.... I highly doubt that. The retention of just those three players means nothing in the long-run. And, unless you have some mystical crystal ball stashed somewhere, you don't know what improvements or changes Cryptic will make to STO in the future.
I don't have a crystal ball admittedly...But I've seen enough failures in this genre to understand if a Game has long range potential. And I'm not an idiot...I realize those 3 Subs specifically will not make or break the Game...Thanks for pointing that out to me though...Is your Captain's name Capt Obvious? But I'm telling you those 3 are a pretty good case study for the long-term potential of this Game...So doubt it all you want...
And perhaps I should clarify what I meant by long-term. I have no doubt STO will be around in some capacity, but what it will be is yet another nitche-Game-ghost-town unless they REALLY pick up the pieces fast...I sat in the Channel with those 3 all night last night...It was bug this, and crash that, and one complaint after another...i don't think they even realize it to be honest cause they are so busy TRYING to have fun...But it does not sound like much fun to me...I'm not saying they don't like certain things about the Game...I'm just saying they are MAJOR ST nerds, I mean HUGE nerds (I say that jokingly of coarse to make a point), and they would play just about anything with the ST label on it...I'm telling you if Cryptic can't please those 3 this Game has zero chance to be anything meaningful long-term cause they are going to be FAR more lenient than the average Customer...
BTW, You have no idea what Cryptic is going to do either. And from what I can gather their reputation is not exactly the greatest...And based on that totally unofficial Poll running right now on the STO Forums they are going to lose about 30% of Subs March 2nd (anyone wondering why the Game is on sale already?)...And another 30% are unhappy, but will re-up for at least one more Month...So you do the math...Like I said...We'll see...

Can't think of any, but STO looks set for a massive cancellation on a potentially unrivalled scale if you believe the official forums. I honestly don't think anyone can argue that this game is currently worthy of a subs fee. Personally i love it, but not enough to pay £10/month to play it when i can play games like CODMW2 for free. Definitely should have been F2P or have a nominal fee. They have simply priced themselves out of the market for many players.
Thing is, i'll bet Cryptic never publish player numbers and because the entire game is instanced and only has 1 server, you'll never really notice players leaving in great numbers.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy

Seriously Spell Checking someone on a Gaming Forum?...lol
No question there is going to be some turnover after the 1st 30 days for any Game...I'm guessing STO will surpass what could be considered average by a LONG margin...But that's just My opinion...I've seen Game that I enjoyed 100 times more than STO completely bomb...Like I said, just My opinion...

I have no doubt STO will be around in some capacity, but what it will be is yet another nitche-Game-ghost-town unless they REALLY pick up the pieces fast... STO cant become a ghosttown like other games, due to the instancing used there will simply be less instances of the same zones, but you will always see the same number of people around you as long as there are enough players to fill a single zone. I sat in the Channel with those 3 all night last night...It was bug this, and crash that, and one complaint after another...i don't think they even realize it to be honest cause they are so busy TRYING to have fun...But it does not sound like much fun to me...I'm not saying they don't like certain things about the Game...I'm just saying they are MAJOR ST nerds, I mean HUGE nerds (I say that jokingly of coarse to make a point), and they would play just about anything with the ST label on it...I'm telling you if Cryptic can't please those 3 this Game has zero chance to be anything meaningful long-term cause they are going to be FAR more lenient than the average Customer... Personally i agree, i was a big warhammer fan(well not weird big, just big big) and it where those issues that drove me away. So at the very least cryptic has to adress the bugs asap, though with being a fan and stuff there always exists the option of players coming back. If warhammer had resolved the population, balance, technical and content issues due to which i left, i would probably return cause i like the IP. They havent done that yet though, and i doubt they ever will, but cryptic has it a bit easier here comparatively, atleast they dont have to worry about population issues(which is major in a open pvp game with zone control) or a crappy underlying netcode/gfx engine. They can just focus on fixing bugs, clarifying some(well ok, all) tooltips, give us a way to respec and creating some silly repeatable highlvl instances where you need to kill a spacewyrm called STOnyxia ... hey it worked before. BTW, You have no idea what Cryptic is going to do either. AOC lost like 70% i think, and that game is actually recovering. There are always people unsatisfied with a game, regardless of bugs, content or graphics. Games are after all entirely up to personal taste even in the best of cases(cant count how often i tried a game with very good reviews and hated it, while liking a game that got poor reviews. To be honest i expect more leaving, its now completly in cryptics hands how many of those that leave come back, they need to provide substantial content and bugfixes aswell as UI improvements.
Edit: There is a saying, the greatest fans are the hardest to please. I think it applies to your 3 friends .
Could be...ST Nerds are a tough crowd...lol...I kid, I kid...
The main problem with the game is that you're doing basically the same thing with a few small variations on the theme. I have to admit, I enjoyed it at the start but after 37 levels of the same it gets old. You can group, but it's still the same. You can PvP, but that gets repetitive, assuming you can actually get into a PvP match with the long queue times there are currently.
Yesterday was the first day since head start when I found myself thinking "not this again". My game time over the last week has dropped to a couple of days from most days and I know when I get to that point and don't want to play the end is near. I doubt I'll re-sub after 30 days and I'm so glad I didn't pay for the lifetime sub.
Well I know one thing, and that is I do not have alot of hours to put into a game. This game is perfect for me, as it is not a game that requires one to put 3 or 4 hours into it for a mission/raid or whatever. When I do play it, I have a blast, so that is what really matters. I appreciate what Crytic has made here, and I will pay to play so that the folks that put all the hard work into it can get paid!! Maybe there should be 2 threads, one for the haters and one for the people who like it?

maybe 3 threads... the fanboys, the haters and the disappointed... I fit into the latter...

Do you play as an MMORPG, or as a single player game?
These types of games can be fun if you just pop in, do a battle or two, and pop back out. Do that once or twice a week and the game has lasting power.
However, it is different if you are part of a large guild and want to have large group actions.
That's the rub isn't it.. That is why it's not worth $15 a month in my opinion to play a lil here and there..
Exactly. There are plenty of free MMOs, and plenty of single player games that you don't have to fork $15/month to play like 4 hours a week. Even if you do like Star Trek, I recommend you play Starfleet Command 1-3
If STO to look as an single player game with MP I give 8/10,minus is monthly sub.
As an MMORPG my score is 2/10
This game need huge changes;give us open world, easy grouping system & interactions between players, exploration.I wish to have feeling;,,Go where no one man has before,,
I agree with the OP. This game was great as a no-strings-attached, 3 week fling but in the end, I didn't want it moving in with me.
No shame in that though... Flying around in starships is (initially) great fun and I got my money's worth in entertainment for the time the game held my interest but the gameplay for me became extremly repetitive and the encounters were mostly very easy and required very little strategy or skill to complete.
It was an above-average experience compared to most recent MMOs but once the shiny wore off - for me anyway - it was time to put it aside and move on.
No regrets though and I think many people will enjoy the game - at least for a while.
- despite on big space and whatnot I felt like playing a single player game
- ground combat visualy and technicaly looks like a crap, and is boring like hell
- the whole game way too repeative
- non friendly IU, especially map section with missing quest markers and stuff
- the klingon side is unfinished, nothing to do except again repeative pvp.
- no skill respec
- skill cap
- the micropayments (now Klingons nd Ferengly, but I can bet there will be much more + respec too I guess0
- too complicated skill system - I really wish to know what exactly I'm picking to skill up. e.g. Field Theory +5, wth it does? this game need serious tooltips, without it, only devs know what such skill can do. And thats not only for skill system window, many items has weird variables.
- no autofire on all weapons in space, and no autofire at all in ground combat
- the game is unfinished and I refuse to be a betatester and pay for it at same time
- GM never repllied to any of my ticket
- Gold spammers even in the game mail system....
The above was what TTom at the Cryptic STO forums posted for their reason for canceling their subscription. That particular thread was closed, though I couldn't see any reason given ... In any case, many of the reasons above are valid, even though some of them are seem to be also venting frustration. I have also cancelled and a lot of the reasons are above. For example:
the klingon side is unfinished, nothing to do except again repeative pvp; true, and known fact no skill respec; true, though I think devs are working on something according to forums skill cap; I would add that the current cap is ridiculously low in that you can max only 1 of maybe 10-15 top tier ability too complicated skill system ....; valid but I think the UI needs adjustment to show what affects what better no autofire on all weapons in space, and no autofire at all in ground combat; pronounced Carpal Tunnel as you spam the space bar .... the game is unfinished ...; well finished is subjective, but I have never max leveled so fast (3 weeks or so?), and frankly now there is really nothing to do other than grind the auto-generated content ... GM never repllied to any of my ticket; from my experience, don't expect any help from a GM in STO
So, for me, I think I agree about "Ok, I give in.", and I though I wouldn't necessarily say the "game is bad", but maybe "in amongst the stuff I like there is a lot that really annoys me"
This seems to point to an odd mentality amongst the devs over at Star Trek Online. Cryptic has made three games now: City of Heroes, which has respects that can be given out at patch time, or by playing "trials" in the game. Champions Online, where the devs were forced to put in respecs as fast as possible after people complained, an especially glaring omission considering you can choose any skill and screw up your character good after making unwise choices so respecs are vital.
And finally we come to Star Trek Online. Did it not occur to the devs while they were developing STO that they probably want to have respecs in the game as soon as possible? Did they not learn from customer complaints for CO? Aren't they using the same game engine as CO? Why can't they port over CO's respec system to STO?
Me, wife and a dosen friends from EVE gave the game a chance and... oh man... After two weeks there are only two of us left, the rest have reached end game only to find out there is none.... :P
There is absolutely nothing to do. Not like there is something, but that is boring, no, there is NOTHING to do. Naaadaaa.
Also, the game is so easy it feels like your playing a 3+ kiddy game. It actually feels like an insult to your intelligence.
Anyway, I loved the space combat and the mix between space and ground missions. Too bad Cryptic released this game two years early.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be our guilds next game. At least until Earthrise comes out. If Earthrise sucks... well... see you all in SWTOR...
A friendly advice; Stay away from Star Trek Online.
Cryptic has been saying that they budgetted the game to be able to support itself at 50k subs.
Honestly I can't say if I think this kind of goal is good or bad... I mean its great that games can keep open so their fans can keep playing even if sub numbers aren't great. But what does that say about a games potential quality? I wont play STO because of their Subs Plus subscription but if it were a hypothetical game I'm not sure if I'd be happy hearing this kind of statement from the developers.
I require my subscription games to be bigger and better than Guild Wars. Unfortunantly CO and STO just dont meet that requirement. This does not mean they are bad and this does not mean they are not fun..... it just means I will be staying away from them. Too pricey for what you get IMO.
Playing: Fallen Earth Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2 and Secret World

The problem is that up until Open beta, they had planned on skill cap. It was only until there almost normal Pre launch patch that they then decided that they would cap the skills (After many had bought there Lifetime Offer).
This capping then meant that they had to put in a respec system. So through poor planning or what ever you want too call it, the plan at the start was that they were not gonna have respecs due to no skill cap.
Played WOW (5 years), AOC, AO, EQ2,AC2, Horizons, Saga of Ryzom, SWG, CO, STO(Beta),ROM, Allods, and many other F2P titles. Asl been in beta for many of the main titles and played countless SP games. I have been gaming for 15+ years!

No, they didn't because the game, as originally designed, and as it was all the way up to early-mid open beta, had unlimited skill points, so there was no need to respec. It's also why you see skills that don't make sense, like wasting skill points in tier 3 and tier 4 ships that you would outgrow in days. With infinite skill points you don't need respec, you just play a bit more and use the new skill points for whatever you want. They scratched that, and found themselves with an almost there release date and lacking a now-necessary respec functionality.
I give STO a 7/10 rating with a much higher potential if they listen to their fan base. Its far from perfect, but i can't seem to stop playing it as it is fun to play in my opinion. Crafting is a big 0 as it really is only a turn in quest to me, but i never was really big into that aspect of MMo's anyways. I love the PvP play with the different scenarios and especially like head butting Klingons LOL! I like that every character not only looks different but has many different battle characters from others in the same class. So far no cookie cutter classes, and I hope that stays viable. I would like the exploration missions to be much bigger in scale and have non combat options (other than scanning types) or at least options that change the results according to what you choose to do. Diplomacy is really a non player so far in my opinion so thats one area they can add to the game to add variance. I really love my bridge crew members and their customization. They actually perform above expectations, when there not stuck somewhere behind a crate lol. One thing I have noticed is this game is drawing many first time players to the MMO world and as they aren't burnt out as many of the fans here seem to be, giving cryptic has some additional time to add extra content. The game is a breath of fresh air in the MMO arena filled with mostly Fasntasy based games. It appears the Cryptic people are listening to their fans ideas, (just completed a survey yesterday on what I wanted added or fixed in the game) and they have been pretty fast with game updates so far, so I think they realize what a potential gold mine they here and are going to trying hard to make it even better.

On the con side its yet another fantasy mmorpg. I honestly believe i will never again play one of those, there is only so much any one person can take.

My gaming blog
see i tried those things when i played it for 2 weeks and you know what, they were nowhere near enough. the group content at the higher levels are boring imo.

Edit: There is a saying, the greatest fans are the hardest to please. I think it applies to your 3 friends .
Could be...ST Nerds are a tough crowd...lol...I kid, I kid...
I guess we'll see soon enough...

2024: 47 years on the Net.
Personal score for STO;
As ST fan I give 6/10
If STO to look as an single player game with MP I give 8/10,minus is monthly sub.
As an MMORPG my score is 2/10
This game need huge changes;give us open world, easy grouping system & interactions between players, exploration.I wish to have feeling;,,Go where no one man has before,,
About bugs I am tolerated & has patience.
If they haven't cancelled Champions Online in 6 months, they won't cancel this.
Cryptic has been saying that they budgetted the game to be able to support itself at 50k subs. So I doubt the game is going anywhere...
...it won't be breaking any sub records, though.
Playing: Fallen Earth
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2 and Secret World

I just played beta but was never gonna buy this game because of the company who made it.
It has all the same problems champions has so its nog big suprise to me.
They just rush every game they make with no content, get alot of lifers and then make a big change just before going live.
Its exactly the same so please be warned for the next mmorpg from them.
