SWOTOR vs FFXIV

These two dominate the 1st and 2nd in development places on MMORPG.com.

Which one are you waiting for and why? Are you expecting one to flop? I’m curious to see how you guys think these future releases compare.

I have intentionally avoided adding my opinion to prevent OP flaming rather than a discussion.

    1) The numbers here mean nothing in the scheme of things. 2) I refuse to even pay attention to either game until they get closer to launch.  Too much hype can ruin a game, the last couple of years are rife with releases that were over hyped and failed (I'm looking at you WAR).

I couldn't agree more. I've tried my hardest to stay away from each, but the temptation is sometimes overwhelming.

As far as which one I think will flop? I don't like to pessimistically expect something to do bad. I think if you go into a situation thinking that you will experience something "not fun" or "bad", chances are you create that scenario for yourself.

I'd still place my finances on playing FF... I've started playing FF since II... and now i'm quite excited about that...

I pick FFXIV because FFXI was the only game that captivated me for an extended period of time.

I HIGHLY DOUBT Bioware has any talent in creating an MMORPG. They can't even program PC games correctly which is why they focus mainly on consoles.

Square Enix already has experience with FFXI, and it was a huge success. Assuming FFXIV will be an updated, modernized version of FFXI, there is no contest here with SWTOR. I do like my Star Wars don't get me wrong, but I don't think Bioware can do what needs to be done with this intellectual property.

    Personally I hope niether flop.

I hope they both do good in thier own rights and show outside gaming companies how mmos can be made. Thru extensive build ground up to extensive alpha and beta testings.

I am looking forward to Star Wars myself as I didn't get a chance to play FF11 doesn't mean I won't try 14 since I don't think they will release at the same time and I don't think they will be release date competators.

Not that it matters to much but i guess you forgot about these PC games by Bio and they didn't have major programing issues:

    Mass Effect

    Never Winter Nights

    Boulder's Gate I & II

Knights Of The Old Republic I & II

    Dragon Age

Theres really no use in arguing about not having issues as some people will always have a problem with a game nomatter the developer.  Just because 3% of people experience a hardware issue, to some people that is the difference between seeing them as a good developer or a bad developer.

I feel the market will be big enough for both games to do well. FF will do well mainly because it will be launching on a console as well.  FFXI was originally released on console, but didn't start making money until alternate console releases.

SWTOR will be a great game, and anyone that thinks bioware will not release anything short of quality knows little about BioWare and less about the current state of the game.

I hope both do well. I will be playing SW:TOR, i have absolutely no interest in any of the FF stuff (but as I said before, i hope it does well).

I have high hopes for both of these, I'd love to see a good solid Star Wars MMO again, don't worry no NG flaming I left Galaxies before that was even an issue. My biggest fear with SW though is the whole trying to fit an RPG into an MMO pretty much because I play them with my friends and mainly my gf. If we both can't have the same freedom we enjoy in most MMOs (ok maybe freedom is the wrong word) then we'll definitely be heading somewhere else. Other than that the settings look like what I'd expect as do the classes. I'd prefer to see where PvP is headed though as well as travel, the single biggest let down for me in Galaxies, before I decide whether I'll pay for the client first.

As for FFXIV my biggest fear has already been handled, no PlayOnline, can I have a Hell Yes! from the audience please? As long as Square doesn't tack on another piece of crap (and that was being nice) useless front end to XiV I'll be pretty happy and at least pick it up if I continue to see what I'm seeing slowly leaking from their site. It looks quality, has a diverse and interesting class set and a good looking setting from what I've seen so far. I think I still need quite a few more answers though.

    Played in some form:
UO til tram, AC, EQ, AO, WW2O, PS, SB, CoH, AC2, Hor, LoTRO, DDO, AoC, Aion, CO, STO
    Playing: WoW (for gf), WAR
    Waiting For: SWTOR, FFXVI
Hoping For: DCUO, Secret World, Earthrise
    -S- (UO Sonoma)

They may dominate the one and two spots but i think their is another mmorpg that could blow them away. The reason this other game is not so hyped is because people have a preconceptions on what the original game was like but the new game is far away from the original.

It has more of a chance of blowing swtor out of the water than FFXIV has simply because FFXIV is a PVE mmorpg,it's main focus is PVE(i like). This other games offers some really great PVE and World PVP plus many other great gaming features.

It also offers companions which it did in the first game, plus it has a mass following just like FFXIV.

It also has top notch graphics(yes i know, graphics does not make a game but it helps if the game is great anyway) that blow the others out of the water. It is also set in a proper world this time round including a vast underwater world(this is the reason for the push back until 2011).

It's also fully voiced and story driven..

Just some of the main character voices.

Neither of them will flop. Not even close to it. I think quite the opposite will happen. That they will both become great successes. I will sub to FF14 however. Final Fantasy has been more apart of my life than star wars has. That's pretty much it. I have more good memories involving FF than SW and as much as I love the series, I just prefer fantasy to sci-fi. I am a huge SW fan. I have all of the movies, both KOTOR's, and will probably buy the game regardless of FF14 and play it for a month or two, to see how it turned out, but FF11 was my first mmo, I'd always wished I could go back to that kind of game and feel what I did when I played ff11. I know that feeling of nostalgia is almost impossible to duplicate, but it's always fun to try for it. I feel SW will be a fun game to play, but I feel FF14 will be my mmo home for years to come.
