CO living or dying?

RykavRykav Champions Online CorrespondentMember Posts: 54

Before I even think about getting two copies of this for 2 PCs I need to ask if this game is gaining or losing population since launch. Also, is it getting better in general?

Thanks!

    Hi

I resubb'ed for a month, and played a week before calling it quit. I was there at launch, the problems that bothered me then, are still here. Namely, they are:

    a- It's a single player game with multi-player potential.

b- Tons of powers, but they all do the same thing (besides 3 or so power sets).

c- Little motivation from loot or crafting.

I could ignore c. if a. and b. were there, unfortunately the combination (or lack of) can't be compensated by the good things the game brings (e.g. customization, pace, art style). As of now, CO is just a CoH upgrade in some respect. It could be so much more.

So after a week I called it quit for good. I moved on to something completely different which I have been enjoying for 2 weeks now (Darkfall).

    Hope this helps,

    Regards

Well the demo/unlimited trial is kinda lame. But if you want to make your own opinion of the game I can send you referral keys which will get you out of the tutorial area and you can decide if you like the game.

People have different views of games, you may end up liking it. If you're interested PM the two emails and I'll send you two keys.

As for population. I haven't had any issues yet finding group members for some of the missions that require a little help. Get into a good super group and it will enhance it more, in my opinion.

I don't think it is as healthy of a population as it was at the start and the last patch has a lot of people pissed off. Still I think you should give it a trial and make your own opinion.

I dont play anymore so I cant say from expierence that the game is dying.

But I still keep in contact with my old Guild and from the looks of it CO is doing poorly.   They went from being so big and active that they had to make a seperate Guild because thier member cap of 250(cant remeber if thats the exact number) member had been reached.   They had a total of around 300 to 400 members between the two guilds.  Very active with weekly meetings and all that.

But now they say that even with 300 to 400 members there are maybe 3 or 4 people on during peak gameing times.   The leaders are trying to recruit more people but there is next to nobody to recruit except for regular players leaving thier dying guilds to find more active ones.

Again, I dont play so I dont know exactly how true this is but from what I am told CO is tanking pretty bad.   For the sake of CO's future, I hope they are exaggerating.

Pretty much agree with everything Sye said and right now we have no idea if Vibrora Bay will address any of those problems in a more complete manner.  Also, if it's any indication, they lock threads that compare features to CoH whereas Champions Online threads thrive in the CoH forums.  Issue 17 hit them hard with the announcement of upgraded graphics and what sounds like a Nemesis-lite feature.  And it's free.  Hard to save face when your competition is already matching you feature for feature in the first 6 months.

Living or dieing....sorry what was the middle thing?

It's better to lurk in forums and be thought a fool...than to endlessly "Quote" and remove all doubts.

I have an appointment tomorrow to make sure I don't have a tumor.

I was planning on staying up all night in a paranoid state of worry anyway.

Nemesis-like feature won't be in Issue 17. However, the Nemesis system was originally proposed by the developer called Positron (he currently works at Paragon Studios,) and was then cherry picked by Cryptic when they made CO, so it's believed that a Nemesis-type system will eventually be in CoH. Speculations says Issue 18 or 19.

CoH also has villains, something CO lacks, and the new CoH expansion, going rogue, will feature side switching between villains and heroes.

Anyway, the people at Cryptic must feel that CO is somewhat of a lost cause considering the improvements being made to CoH all the time.

CoH = a Labour of love for the devs. One day I will return. The powers in CoH were considerbaly varied and innovative, had different depths to it than what is found in CO, i.e. mostly the same level of damage, but dressed up differently.

CO took a dive afrer Cryptic's MT lust went crazy, it's obviously about getting as much money as they can. Sure that's what a business is about, the bottom line, but the art of the game and its playability has suffered. That may change now the previous-MT zone has been pencilled in, after a panic, as a free expansion but the damage to Cryptic's rep has been done. Bad rep equals less players, and the remaining fewer amounts will be preyed on until the plug has to be pulled on the server after the feasibility study is done and the games running costs exceed future projections of making a profit and will instead incur a loss. Not just tempting a flame war or trolling this thread, history has shown that this is what happens, with examples like Tabula Rasa and Matrix Onine being but two.

CO's actively playing numbers are way down at the moment.  Quite a lot of us moved over to STO, at least for the short term.

Its more of a question, will these players return once the new shiny toy syndrome has elapsed.

That is a good analysis of Cryptic's recent behavior.  No wonder they cannot get anything done and whatever they get out the door is executed poorly.

Been awhile now since I've played. But this happened too me. I was a member of Penny Arcade official CO guild. We were hundreds strong. Then slowly and surely after 30 free days were up man people straight disappeared without a trace

Next thing i knew only saw like 2-3 members online

I quit at some point due to a bunch of game flaws I noticed.

These devs are just plain horrible... The game coulda been pretty good but they kicked us all in the nuts on Launch day and the game just went to crap after that. With every Patch, the game just got worse and worse.

I played for the first couple of months, but then I hit a huge gap in missions, got bored and left.  This game really shouldn't be listed as a MMO.  There is very minimal interaction between players; almost none is necessary.  I'd done one instance with a group and it was a complete charlie foxtrot having a group of five DPS just going wild, dying with no abandon multiple times and being able to clear the entire area within 45min. successfully.  IMO Cryptic gave up on this one when Marvel pulled out.

I don't know why anyone thinks of this game so much like a single-player game.  Yes most of the game can be solo'd.  But why should the devs force the players to make friends?  Why can't the players do that on their own?

    I actually enjoy the game.

I can't call this game an upgrade as the 2 don't play the same. Yyes they are both Superhero MMOs, but they are not the same game. CoX = slow combat + addiction to speed boost, CO = fast paced combat.

It's already dead, dewd. Don't give Cryptic any more money than they've already stolen.

i bought CO for 10 bucks off of steam during christmas break. I played it for a week and then got really bored and quit. Other then the character customization I really didn't find anything appealing about the game.

They are coming out with a pretty large adventure pack/expansion thingy failry soon.....maybe wait and see if that is any good before purchasing the game. The CO devs are raving about it that its there best work. O yeah and when i played the population was OK for me. When i needed a group there were people there to join me. Unfortunantly grouping was not needed for most of the content. Just my 2 cents......

    Playing: Fallen Earth
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2 and Secret World

The expansion is on the test server.  I played it last night and enjoyed it.  Also, the added tier4 powers which require you to have 10 powers from a grouping of powersets.  They are pretty cool.  Some need a buff and one will probably be loved by all.

Also, they added a "really hard" 5 man lair that i have not seen yet.  It seems the best way to look at CO is that it is an MMO with good roleplay-ability & creator which you can solo most stuff to the end game.  The end game is where the teaming really appears to shine.

With that in mind I am now working on a leveling my second character to 40.  He will focus on being a tank and minor in applying debuffs.  I think he will be highly useful in the end game lairs.

Probably the most uninformed comment in this thread.  I couldn't let it pass without saying how completely false this comment is.  I've been playing CoX for almost 6 years and of the many dozens of characters I play I have NEVER taken Speed Boost or felt I needed it to make the combat more "fast paced".
