I've played a great many MMOs in my time. I started with Meridian 59, and progressed to UO, The Realm Online, EQ, Asheron's Call, and many more.
I've maxed out more characters than I care to recall in WoW. I've played EVE Online until my eyes bled. I've played every stinking MMO I can think of, even a ton of the F2P/MT based ones.
I miss the glory days of running for my life in UO, or Asheron's Call on Darktide (good old Blood Monarchy "Swear or Die!"). DAoC, even Shadowbane! PlanetSide was fun for awhile, too.
But all of that is in the past. I've played all of these games so much, I get no enjoyment out of them any more. I find myself wondering from MMO to MMO, looking for something new and entertaining, something fresh, something challenging! I crave cut-throat sandbox style game play, and I can't find it!
I see one game on the horizon that shows real promise of delivering what I'm looking for. That game is Mortal Online. I know it's in open beta, and I've played through it a bit, but it's still too buggy to be able to experience it fully. I understand it's still beta, I'm not dogging Star Vault or MO here. I can't wait to see the final product, I'm very excited about it, but...
I was excited about STO. I was excited about Aion. I was excited about Vanguard. I was excited about so many epic MMO failures, I can't even recall all of them.
So, my fellow MMORPG players, what is a veteran MMO gamer to do? Are there any gems out there that I have yet to discover? Can anyone suggest a great sandbox style game that's really difficult to learn, and even more difficult to master?
I'm tired of all the "theme park" style MMOs. I want to work for something, so I can get that sense of accomplishment. Hell, WoW has become so bad, you don't even have to move your character to get into a group and do a dungeon or raid any more! And soon, you won't have to move to get into Battlegrounds, either.
I desire a challenge! Can anyone point me in the right direction? Because I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Anywhere...

actually, if you open your honor tab you can queue from where you're standing. At least, that was a function before i quit.
I too miss the days of nonthemeparkness. Which is why I'm looking for something new, something different, yet something the same. The only difference is that the almost-finished game I'm looking at is Global Agenda.
I play in a sandbox.
They're actually adding a Battlegrounds systems that is almost identical to the Dungeon Finder system. They're removing Marks of Honor, Battleground daily quests, and making the Battleground system the only way to access the Battlegrounds (if I'm not mistaken). Anyway...
I'm going to check out AG as soon as I can. I like to try out most MMOs, and give them at least a few days worth of play time, to see if I like it. Hopefully AG will be a good one. I have really high hopes for Mortal Online, though. *crosses fingers*

What about dark fall?

I tried Dark Fall, back when you had to be lucky enough for the online store to be open to be able to purchase a copy of the game/subscribe an account (the store was usually open for a couple of hours, one or twice a month). It was interesting, but Adventurine kept double billing me every month, and no matter how many times I talked to them, they kept on doin it. Even after I terminated my account, they kept billing me for one account. I wound up having to cancel the CC just to get them to stop.
Needless to say, I don't do business with Adventurine any more, regardless of how good their game may or may not be.

OP, sounds like you're suffering from burn out.
Take a break from computer games. The longer the break the better.
Burn out is nature's way of getting us to try new things.

Join the search party pal. A lot of players here because they are STILL looking for it as well.
Hell, just cancelled my AoC account AGAIN, and more than likely for the last time because I realized I was paying $15 a month for more of the same and to be bored. I am playing a sim game called CitiesXL, and sadly, it is far more entertaining and challenging for a flat rate.
I guess alot of us are having the same thoughts and feelings as the OP, and I was thinking it must be a burn out aswell.
Talking to a friend about the current game situation I realized it might be somtehing else......
MMO's are old, the whole concept, the style, the .. you name it, its been many years (10+) with nothing new. I think the game companys have to invent something completely new. A whole new type of game.
In other words...I dont think there will ever be a new better MMO making me feel like it did the first time I played one.
Craft of Gods is in beta ( on and off )
Last Thursday until Sunday afternoon everyone was able to play levels 1-10. Devs say the beta will open again within days. This game looks very promising, yet it still needs lot's of work.
Op, I would also suggest going to work and some exercises.
This is exactly what I'm doing right now. I'm having a break from MMO's so someday I can regain the excitement that I used to feel when playing games.
I actually find that kind of insulting. You have no idea what my work schedule, or workout routine is like. Thanks for making some assumptions, though, that really helps us all out...
And in regards to burnout: Until about two months ago, I hadn't touched an MMO in almost a year! You see, I had to go overseas for work. Even while "over there" (not a soldier, but close) I had no desire to rush back home to try out this or that MMO. They're all bland, rehashed garbage, over and over and over again. I haven't played a truly gripping, entertaining MMO in a long time. I stuck with WoW as long as I have, simply because I had yet to discover all there was to do in that game... But that has changed. And now...?
Maybe they need to re-invent the wheel here, as has been suggested above.
