 Hello,

I have made many posts about my computer and queries about how it can be upgraded. now i have come to a brick wall and just want to upgrade the RAM (the only part that can be upgraded). I was wondering if this would make a difference in my game play. I mostly play wow and on low settings, it all well and bearable outside of 25 man raids, at the moment i run about 3/5 fps in a 25 man raid, according to Crucial (ram selling company) an OS with a 32bit system will only recognise 3g - 3.5gb at the moment i have 2x 1GB installed (stock) i want to buy 1x 2GB ram.

I just want to know if this will make a difference.

will i get like 10Fps in raids (10 is alot for me and i can bear it)

Thank You.

Rep.

rather than go crazy with your older system, just see a tech person and O/C everything to the max.If you have to spend a couple hundred on a better cooling system that is still cheaper than either a cpu or a gpu.Ram i know is cheap and for good reason, don't waste your time, unless you are running 512 ram,you won't notice any difference.

Large raids do depend a lot on over all bandwidth but i would say try to get your cpu to 3 ghz o/c'd,leave the rest to your tech guy, albeit you can find gpu o/c programs on the net.Anyhoot, the reason for the O/C is you can probably still use the upgraded cooling system on a future system, witch you can O/C again.

That souns complicated and im sure O/c'ing your pc isnt good on the long term. Also i dont think my PC's power supply is upgradable, im not sure. It is a Dell studio Hybryd its a PC which conssits of laptop parts but all meshed togetehr in a small box.

I hope you get the picture.

good luck with Ocing , rohit has Dell studio hybrid www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-hybrid/pd.aspx  ,probably your problem is your vga rohit but i cant comment about  Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (your on-board vga i think ) at wow . ?If you could post system specs other wow players could give an idea.

www.lavalys.com/products.php   If you are not teck savvy download everest ultimate trial ,it shows system info ;cpu ,ram type ,vga ,sound card etc.

Edit :motherboard has only 2 ram slots and both are in use now , If you want to add 2gb ram youll take 1gb module(s) out

Believe me when i say when you upgrade to 4gig with 32bit OS its around 3gig+ this will make a difference.

    Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

I would suggest replacing your 2GB of RAM with 4GBs. That would be a good upgrade for your system. But even just replacing 1GB with a 2GB RAM module would improve it. Just not as much as the 4GB would.

A 32 bit operating system can recognize 4GB of total memory. Graphics memory is recognized before RAM. That results in the operating system reporting less RAM than may really be in the system.  Your system uses a portion of it's RAM for your graphics card's memory needs (that's what shared memory means) so all of 4GB of RAM will be used in one way or another.

I can't really say if it would increase the FPS you see but it would definitely help by having more memory available to hold the graphics for ready use. That would result in less time waiting for those graphics to be transferred from the hard drive to memory.

The price for the memory modules you linked is competitive with the prices, excluding the VAT, of similar memory in the U.S.

I might have this wrong but I thought only 32bit systems only recognized 3GB at the most and you would need at least 64bit to recognize more than 3GB

Edit: Read if your using Vista and have SP1 it now recognizes the full 4GB of RAM

The 32bit operating system is set to default recognize up to 3.12mb of ram. This can be disabled, though the switch can cause some applications to have problems that are related to address dependencies, or a reduction in kernel space. You may also suffer from driver problems when switching to 4gb.

You can read about it here.

     Thanks site answered my question..

Bottom line: if you have 4GB of RAM in your system (or more), and you want to take full advantage of it, start using a 64-bit OS.

  • SimsuSimsu Member UncommonPosts: 386

Total ram is limited by the OS version not being 32/64 bit (Tho the standard limit is 4 gigs for 32 bit). The 32/64 bit decides, among other things, how much ram each application can use. 32 bit is limited to 2 gigs per application. Windows XP/Vista generally supports 4 gigs of ram. Tho only 3 gigs will show as available.

If you upgrade from 2x1 gig sticks to 1x2 gig stick  you're not going to see much, if any, in the way of a performance boost. If you went 2x2 gigs you would see a performance boost. However if your frame rates are so low I don't know how much it will end up helping you out.

  • CleffyCleffy Member RarePosts: 6,414

Total Ram is limited by bits if the bits are low enough.  The absolute maximum memory 32-bit can support is 4 gigs.  64-bit windows is OS limited to 128GB.

  • ndodgendodge Member UncommonPosts: 55

128? sounds like i need to find myself 4x32 chips... or just mash a ssd into the slots :D

op!put the cheapest(in price )if 1 gb is cheaper put the 1 gb if its 2 put the 2gig

true your system will only recon 3.25 but the whole system will still use 4 gig ,i dont think the price will make a big diff.

make sure to leave full control to microsoft if you got vista or newer system if you got xp then go see

speedguide.net to optimize your network setting if you dont know if you got a feature 9 time out of 10 you are better off disabling it.

fi you got aa you can disable that too most game have internal tool that comes in conflict with aa

check eq2 (the game i like)bloom effect and aa dont like each other its one or the other cant have both

lastly check kadaitcha.cx very close to all the tweak in there are NOT  usefull for vista and newer os.xp?

mm i would still disable them

not many tweak work and those that do work are counted in one hand

some work right away but overtime will slow down computer .check deactivating paging file on a whole it does speed up

computer but on the long run it slow down the computer because some file are waiting to be paged trough the paging file

in the end you end up with less ressource

like i say the site i mentionned if you dont know if you have a tweak disable it often it will run faster

microsoft did an article about the supposed tweak that are mentionned on the net and i saw 3 tip that still worked when the list was done

since all of them arent recommended by ms i wont mention them!

How would i upgrade to 64bit?

    image

  • noquarternoquarter Member Posts: 1,170

Wait can you post the rest of your specs? I think you want to upgrade something else before your ram if you're only getting 10 fps on low settings. 4GB of RAM is great and all but WoW doesn't use a *ton* of ram, it should run absolutely fine on 2GB.

If you do go the RAM route, you should have 4 memory slots total, with 2x1gb in there, you would want to just add another 2x1gb to get 4x1gb total.

edit: Nevermind.. Dell Studio Hybrid.. not much you can do with that, and you're right 2x2gb would be the only way to go with memory, but now I definitely don't think more RAM is going to help. At low settings WoW is probably only using 750MB top which leaves 1.25GB for your OS.. shouldn't be the problem.

  • jagd1jagd1 Member Posts: 281

I dont think you need 64bit os for 4GB ram ,it is correct 32bit OSes can adresse 4gb total ram (including graphic card + some other things ) .But your vga will use from your ram ,and youll have  a bit ram adresse reserved some other things (not worth upgrade if you have to buy new OS) .

How could you upgrade to 64 bit (Do you know your vista is not 64 bit?)

    a) Buy a 64bit os -win7 is the latest (still has 32bit version be careful)

    b) You may have 64bit version of vista at installation CD ,some pc/notebooks gave freedom to user to choose 32 or 64 bit os .If you dont know mail Dell and ask them if you can install vista 64bit with your cd key.

Better make sure you can run a 64 bit version of windows before you buy it.

To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor. To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable, do the following:

    1. Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Performance Information and Tools.

    2. Click View and print details.

    3. In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type. Under 64-bit capable, you can see whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)

Yes it is 64 Bit capable thanks. :)

And here are the rest of the specs if you need them

I am getting alot of mixed messages > dont upgrade its not worth it/upgrade it makes a big differenece.

I can tell you that outside of 25man raids wow runs smoothly e.g.

    Quite areas > sholozar baisin > 12 - 25Fps

    Ironforge (semi busy) 15fps >

    Well in dungeons too

64 bit OS is good at principal but you dont need it ,ill try to explain

1- 32bit OSes can use max 4Gb ram including vga and system resourse ,but you have not got a vga with dedicated memory .Your  vga will use from your system ram and youll only have a bit unused ram allocated to system adresses. And max ram you can have 4gb with only 2 ram slots.

You have to find youll gain a boost from memory upgrade before upgrading to 64bit honestly. Your vga 965g is weak and i think it is the thing limiting you before ram.

You need someone raiding with 965g and 4gb ram to answer this ,best place is wow subforum  to ask and add your screen  resolution .

I think you dont need 64bit os for this system ,but you should choose 64bit for new system(s)

Upgrading to 4 gigs of RAM will help some. A better upgrade would be to a dedicated graphics card from integrated, but since that isn't possible with what you have, a RAM upgrade is your only option.

1x2 vs 2x1 is really that much of a difference. Just go with 2x2 (eventhough it wont be recoginzed as 4gig but rather 3-3.5) and get a new graphics card.

Make sure you get the best possible ram for your comp. Crucial will tell you. and for the graphics cards, go with the

Vista should recognise 4gb of ram, get something like 2x2GB and 7-7-7-24 (lower the numbers the better) should cost under $100 if you're american. Search on www.newegg.com

I recommend getting win7 though, easy to torrent download :)

urgh I didnt see that you had a laptop. so you cant go to 2x2 or a dedicated gpu.

your screwed. Get a new comp. Its not worth the price to try and upgrade that. a

Get something like this, its relatively cheap(though you can do better)
