Aion or Age of Conan

Big.Daddy.SamediBig.Daddy.Samedi Member UncommonPosts: 411

Good Day,

I am stuck on trying to decide on a new game to play. Age of Conan or Aion. Having played both and never really subscribed I am looking into these to play for the next few months to a year. I have copies or both.... so it is just the sub. So what I am asking is what you think  I should play and why.

    Like it cute? Play Aion.

    Like it gritty? Play AoC.

    Asian comic style? Aion.

    Western realistic style? AoC.

    Blood and Gore? AoC.

    No brutal stuff? Aion.

Or just play the free trial of AoC and get an Aion buddy key, and try that, and then buy what you like more.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

    I haven't tried either...sorry

A few of my friends played AoC and said its fun up until level 20 and then it just sucks

As for Aion the reviewers all speak about the grindfest

Played: World of Warcraft (5Y), WarHammer (3M), Anarchy Online, Runescape (5+Y), Lord of the Rings Online, Runes of Magic, City of Heroes/Villains, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Fallen Earth (1M)

    Currently Playing: Guild Wars
    Currently Trying: None
Taking a Break From: EVE Online

All I read about is the improvements to AoC and with and expansion coming out it looks to be real good. and Aion is a very pretty game with what appears to be a nice style (Played in beta) and enjoyed it.... this is why I am torn. What game has a better future, and the potential to keep one entertained for longer.

IMO Aion wasn't even fun up to level 20...and AoC..again imo...remains fun past 20. Unless you will lose your noodles because voice acting is not present for every NPC..as it is in Tortage starter area. The quests are still there ..just not contained in a small area. I find AoC and engaging and beautiful game. A bit too instanced..but not a game-breaker for me. Endgame is fun..but could use more variation. Still..great game imo. As you can tell ..I recommend AoC over Aion.

If I'd have to choose one... hmmm... probaly AoC.

I bought AoC when it was new and was rather disappointed about the amount of stuff that was promised, and which didn't exist or existed but didn't work. I then tried it every now and then, but never subbed for a longer time, and never had a char above lvl 26 or something. Now I got so sick of the single starting area that, even though I think the game is fun on a higher level, I couldn't bring myself to play it again.

Aion would be something new to me. However, I prefer the graphic style of AoC over that of Aion, and... I just don't like Aion.

So I'd probably play AoC. But only if I'd have to. Since I don't have to, I play Fallen Earth. :)

I would say you can't really wrong, if you want more of a realistic gory game then AOC is your game and if you want a more immersive fantasy game then Aion. Also i don't know why people call aion a grindfest, imo both have the same grind but aoc prolly has it worse which will be fixed in the upcoming expansion though. If i were in your position i would go with Aion and play for a few months at which point i would more than likely be bored so then i can go to AOC which will have/soon release the new expansion making the game a ton better.

You're probably going to be let down either path you go.

AoC has great visuals, but that's about it. Heavy instancing makes the game feel considerably less like a "world" even if the zones are well constructed and pretty, the quests are bland, the interface is shaky, and it is really dull unless you intend to play a melee class, as casters just have a very bland feeling to them. Additionally, Siege warfare is still essentially broken and even when it works is more or less grindy as towns can be ripped down and rebuilt nearly overnight so its more of a display than anything meaningful.

Aion, once you get past the (for most people) grind, the gold sellers, bots and exploiters, you still have to deal with relatively light content, little to do outside of fighting, and more importantly, weak and uninspired RvR as it's essentially the same guilds rolling the same static keeps whenever they become available, with the possibility still of crashing out. Abyss point grinding gets quite old when you realize how small the abyss really is, get tired of people suiciding to get away from you/dieing because you accidentally hit the space bar flying between islands, and general other issues with the limited flight in the game. If they ever release what's in the vision trailer there might be some more depth to it, but don't hold your breath on that.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Aion is absolutely terrible. I'm amazed it isn't a F2P game, because i've played better F2P then it.

Of the two, AoC definitely is better.

Aion is a much better game then AoC, just check the responses you've gotten.  AoC fans spend alot more time on forums then Aion fans (Aion fans are playing Aion)  I'm taking a break from MMO's in general but like to keep up with news and stuff so I come here.  Aion has kept be entertained for hours upon hours, AoC just seems like a really inferior product.  The only thing they have going for them in my opinion is mature and hardcore content, they have to have this to compete, if that element is not their AoC loses all of it's intrigue.  But in saying "mature" content it gets old after a while and leaves u feeling a little currupted while Aion has that u are a champion of good feel (whether u play Elyos or Asmodian)

Spoken as a person who has played both, I'd say AoC,  but your mileage may vary.  I'll not repeat the comparisons made by everyone else in this thread to date.

I'll just say this, Aion is a grind-fest pure and simple and anyone who says different is deluding themselves.  This is what killed it for me.   I prefer a more casual play-style nowadays and Conan was a better fit.

AoC is WAY WAY WAY better then Aion.  Aion is nothing but a HUGE grind.  AND the pvp sucks ass.

hi, i was in the exact same boat as you wanted a new mmo got it down to aoc and aion, All the bad comments about aion was turning me off but i got a copy quite cheap and ended up buying both i can honestly say i am glad i ddnt get turned off by the aion bashing post's because i have been really enjoying it, it is however linear progression so replaying on different chars wont hold much interest, it is a bit grindy but i have been grinding to get mats for crafted blues along the way anyway, crafting system is a bit slow but quite cheap with work orders( no need to make pieces of gear after gear to lvl it) community seems quite friendly and helpful, my advise get a trial of aoc give it a go i havent actually played it yet past lvl 3 anyway been enjoying aion to much pretty sure i can send u a buddy key for an aion trial if u would like.

Dont listen to people with 1-50 posts first of all. Since most of them are just accounts made yesterday in favour of the game they are promoting.

And second I suggest you try both and and see which one fits you best. And which one you enjoy the most.

But if you want my opinion here it is. Not sure it will help tho.

I played Aion in beta and where very happy playing it. It might be a little grind but also very entertaining. And the game looks beautiful and I think (hope) the warplag when in pvp are gone since I only playing in beta on 4 chars from 1-25.

I tried AoC when it first came out and also in beta. But then it lagged alot and there was many bugs. So yesterday I bought the game and I am playing it for now until I dont know, probably til I get bored. The had an offer that you can buy the game and get 4 ingame items after doing trial for just 20 euro. And you also get 30 days freeplay when doing that so I didnt see any point not trying it out now when its less bugs and alittle more content. And nice to have the game when  Rise of the Godslayer comes out to AoC, which will be their first expansion.

So now you got alittle info on how I did. I hope you find the right game for yourself. And good luck with whatever you choose.

But not all.  I personally am not playing either game atm, I was just offering an opinion, as are you.  A higher post count does not automatically lend credibility to a statement.  It is the quality of the posts that count, not the number.

As far as promoting a game, as I stated, I am currently not playing either, so I don't have a horse in either race.

Your kidding right? ive been a member of this website for quite some time..  and i have less than 50 posts.. thats makes what i have to say... irrelevant?

These are forums... everyone favours differently... its all subjective.  whether you have 1 post or 600 posts.

good points.  I prefer AoC and I actually liked it more after lvl 20 - more freedom to roam, less(not totally) locked into the character's storyline.  my opinion is that they have corrected most of the stuff that caused such horror stories at launch.  I am leaning away now from buying a game at launch - for many games it is like you are buying the rights to a third phase of beta-testing.

I had entrance to Aion free as i was a tabula rasa player, and yet I still chose AoC.

Aion is lots of grinding and most of the gameplay can be achieved in other games. The only advantage is the graphics and sound which diminish in interest after a month or two.

AoC is of good value now after all the work they have done on it, and with an expansion in the works should only get better.

Age of conan is actually a really amazing game i would say

it just sucks that no one seems to play the game...at peak times there was 20 people on the server i picked when i played the trial for 30 days

i wish more people would try AoC out

if your looking for tons of people to play with Pick Aion....if you like to play solo for a while check out Age of conan

The only problem with your post I have is your first  sentence, the rest was good advice.  The problem with your logic is that some of us, like me, come in post on a few threads and then do not return for several weeks or even months - we are playing the games.  On the other hand some people have so many posts I wonder when they get the time to actually play the games.  So a lower post total may mean that we are doing other things not that we only joined to be a fanboy.  More posts might mean we have nothing to do with our time and just post.  Sometimes I think trolling on forums is the most popular free to play role playing game out there.

IMO the only thing Aion has going for it right now is nice graphics and character creation...other then that theres really nothing different from any other MMO out there. I enjoyed it for the first 2-3 months and then slowly started to see thru the pretty graphics and realized its another average MMORPG no different from the rest.

If your looking for a MMO thats slightly different then the rest, AoC is defiently the way to go, The combat system alone in AoC is worth trying at least once imo.

To make it simple, Aion doesn't have much "there" at the moment until 2.0 comes out. AoC has had some time to grow so you'll probably find more enjoyment in AoC unless you waiting for the updates to Aion, even then I can't say much because it's not out.

I am not really sure what you should go with.

I tried the Aoc trial and I played Aion when it was released in the west.

Personally I really did not like either of them enough to pay, but I will tell you what I think would be the better game to invest in.

Okay Aion well.. it was pretty fun for the first 20 levels until you hit the early thirties then I became extremely bored.

Leveling the last 20 levels in Aion was more hard work than fun. I personally consider it a waste of $80(game with time).

The developers keep promising more content and fixes so who knows mabye they are not all talk.

AoC is better imo way more innovation.

I didn't buy the real game but the trial wasn't too bad.

As for content, AoC is promising and showcasing WAAAAY more conent that NCsoft keeps on blabbering about.

If you really have the patience wait to around august and see if Aion is doing anything to further their so called Vision of AIon, but in the meantime I suggest playing Aoc.

its a tough call both have their good points and bad, but i did vote for AoC even tho not subbed to it and i am subbed to Aion. the very worst aspect of AoC is the shitty community i have never seen a worse community than AoC has. and since its labeled "for adults" or what ever they pretty much say everything and anything they want. i seriously think more kids play AoC than adults.

but the game itself is ALOT of fun. i played at launch and got bored really fast others loved tortage but i HATED it mainly because i'm an alt whore and had no real idea about of the classes so played alot of them to 20 to decide wich i liked, but by then i was so sick of it i just unsubbed. months later i went back and was liking it alot, looked around at other servers because mine was dead and they had free transfers open. made a character on Chimera and the community was very good, transfered there then seemed alot of others got the same idea and turned the once good community of chimera to shit.

I have been meaning to go back and try AoC again hoping the morons quit by now but haven't got around to it.

Aion i enjoyed alot and i stuck to 1 character on there longer than other games for some reason. then i hit 40 and just stopped after realizing while playing an SM (least gear dependent class of all time) made it easier to level and not worrying about money for gear was nice,BUT when pretty much gear makes very little difference either greens or epics i just lost motivation to play him anymore. its like why run those instances for nice gear that doesn't really improve your class at all, while i still really like pvping on him now and then i basicly shelved him till i feel like leveling him again. playing an assassin and ranger now but logging in less and less since they have added nothing to the game since launch. they made it a little less of a grind, wich i don't mind grinding if i like the game/class. and tweaked a few things here and there but added nothing to it since na got the game. once they start adding some of the stuff from the vision trailer to the game it will boost my confidence and i'll want to play more but now its getting stale.

  • lethyslethys Member UncommonPosts: 585

Depending on the class you choose, Aion is brutal until level 16, then even more brutal when you realize that the class you chose sucks.  Balance isn't that game's forte.

Age of Conan is a better looking game even a year before.  Aion is simply grind-fest, AoC you hit max level in less than an eighth of the time it takes to level in Aion, even the American version.

Aion may as well have been named "Grind-On" because all you do is grind in order to make up for the extreme lack of content.  The Abyss is not that much fun either.  It is an overrated gankfest which is both one of the only options for leveling efficiently and also getting killed six times by roaming bands of higher rank players.

It simply isn't fun, isn't sandbox at all, isn't extreme, keep taking is glitchy and laggy in the way it was in WAR despite promises of this being on the contrary.  Go with AoC.
