Lately im hearing: "MMOS are going Downhill","This game is boring",Or "why you quit warcraft"..Have we really lost Joy in these MMOS?..what happened to the "SATISFIED" player?,Its seems like players are just making things worse. We put MMOS down because of what we say..and our threads gets thousands of views,But i guarantee one person says: "This game sucks" because of our opinions of the games future players are turned-off by our words.THATS WHY MMOS ARE GOING DOWNHILL!-We need to speak POSITIVE!!!-No need to put an MMO DOWN!.

actually I believe that games like Darkfall and MO (or at least the idea of MO) tell tales of hope for MMOs. if anything, hopefully someone will pick up SWG's old model and clone it.
Only reason I could even deal with the genre or you people is the small selection of games that still feel like actual mmos or are trying to recapture what mmos were supposed to be.
If it wasn't for games like Eve i would be rid of this genre.

Really it is just the abuse the rest of the universe of MMO's are getting from WoW. I mean it really perfected the MMO formula. Until a whole lot of people get bored with it, or blizzard turns its head to something that is more profitable (highly doubtful) the world of MMO's is stuck. New ideas are hard to come by when the majority is playing something else, and no game can get enough support.
Also... MMORPG is really negative about every game. Not gonna change anytime soon. (even though I do agree with you )
Cease And Repent.
It does what everything good does, it died.
Darkfall and Mortal Online? I don't get it. Unless you are being sarcastic, and you are trying to say there is no hope?
I wouldn't play either one if they were perfectly polished and made by Blizzard. The features in those games are terrible.
Make an updated version of Dark Age of Camelot. No one has done a classic RvR game since DAoC.
I think games including and since WoW have marginalized mmorpgs and turned the genre into a smorgasbord of fastfood gaming. Games since The Realm Online, UO and EverQuest have been building upon staples that those games established, and some, not all, but some have really done a nice job at building upon those staples, and some have thought that they can be launched with a very shallow representation of those staples, only to either fail or fall short of mass audience attention.
So then the debate become, what defines success. Well, if you have to ask that question with some of the games, then being so apologetic or misunderstanding about elemental expectations just enables developers to deliver mediocrity. But I digress. . .
In all honesty, different games appeal to different people, and there isn't one recipe for success or appeal, but I have noticed that more mmo/mmorpgs over the last couple of years have tried to get by with more by doing less. There are a few exceptions, but if i turn the page in a magazine or read boards about how every mmo/mmorpg gets a passing grade and where the reviewer cant be honestly critical, but passively modest, then I know something aint right.
Yeah, gotta say, while I love the direction of MO, the game is ugly and clumsy at best. I played it for a couple days, met a few giggling 12 year olds, laughing at their nude character, drowned in a lake... somehow, finally figured out how to kill a weasel, then got eaten by a wolf right next to the rez priest... about 17 times. I sincerely doubt MO will even make a flicker in the commercial market.
Also, bear in mind that WoW is not some magical, godly entity. 11 million people playing a game is not really new. Modern Warfare 2 sold more copies than that in the first couple of months of its release. I can't seem to get my brain around why everyone is trying to compete, copy or "bring down" WoW. Ok, so its a good game... congrats.
Can you imagine if, following suit of the Modern Warfare release, the ONLY games released on the XBox for the next 5 years were military FPS? Good god! I may give up gaming altogether!
Do not try to compete with WoW. Period. That does not, however, mean that people should stop making MMOs. WoW is one title in one genre in one market. Its not even that big!
My god, get over this warcraft orgasm already and let's try to focus on something else.
People get burned out. They blame the MMO genre for their burn out. Truth is: you can get burned out on anything.
Take a break from the genre. It will still be here when you return. The longer the break the better.
Many wish for resurrection of their dead or dying game. Probably never going to happen. Many of these games were customer service nightmares. Customer service is the biggest expense an MMO has after launch.

I think you make a good point about players being "burned out." They talk about how the played all these MMOs for years way back when and how they have tried all the ones that are currently out today. That is a very very long time to be doing the same sort of thing, no matter how good it is. Also I hate to say it, but you will never get the same feel you got from your first MMOs. No matter what the game was, since it was the first of its kind it felt very special and every feature seemed great. Now that you have been there and done that, even if the exact same game were to be released again, exept only with updated graphics, you wouldn't have the same feeling you did the first time. Sure you may still like it, but it wont be the same because the concept of MMOs is not new anymore. But if you sit out for awhile and not try every single MMO that comes out, or constantly dwell on games you played years ago, you will be able to enjoy the new games a lot more.
MMOs are still rockin'
I see alot of developers manipulating the players and market to much and i think that plays alot into things.
Godspeed my fellow gamer
I don't really buy this, certainly not for me..
I'm not burned out on the genre', i'm burned out on the games they keep producing over and over again.. If i took a break 9 months ago, and then came back three months from now, what would have changed as far as the games go? Do I have to wait 2 years? Three? Seems a bit extreme..
Yes theres Darkfall, which I think is a great game, but (in my opinion only) needs some type of skill cap. Theres also EvE, which I think is another fantastic game, but i'm not a big fan of its combat, I still play it, but I'm still looking for something more. So sadly, the two MMOs that seem to be trying to break the mold, suffer from things I personally don't like (figures).
Most of the other MMOs, i find very extremelly repetative.
When a game is made with the content I'm looking for, it will be amazing how fast the burnout goes away (naturally).. Do i expect them to cater to just me? Nope, but i don't think I'm burnt out on the genre' so much as its burnt out on itself..
You don't have to look much farther than Champions and Star Trek (I bought neither of those games, but tested both), and that a game company feels like they can release them, and make money.
Heres hoping Earthrise can break my burn out
I want a MMO that has a huge open world to explore thats full of content. I am not talking about these games that have open worlds but there is nonthing really out there. This is the one thing that I have not seen in any mmo released in years. I want to explore and go on an adventure!
Want a true mmo? a world? wanna make a difference.

I don't really see the problem. My tastes have changed and I'm no longer really interested in theme park style games where leveling up and running raids is the core design.
So I play EVE and while I'm happy I have one game I enjoy, I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of alternatives similar to it along the fantasy line because sometimes I just like to swing a good broad sword.
Lots of other folks seem to be having a good time in WOW and other games and I'm not quite sure what a "true MMO" really is.
The old school days are pretty much gone, games have evolved for better or worse and we'll not see the likes of them any time soon except from smaller Indy dev's who are trying to cater to the niche market that is looking for this style of game. (of which I'm one of)

Don't just play games, inhabit virtual worlds™
"This is the most intelligent, well qualified and articulate response to a post I have ever seen on these forums. It's a shame most people here won't have the attention span to read past the second line." - Anon
MMOs used to be about creating online virtual worlds for us to participate in, and to choose and carve out own paths within them. In today's MMOs, our paths are mostly defined already, and we follow along on rails through static and linearly designed worlds with little substance or depth. Where you go, what you do, and how you do it, is mostly the same between all players, which makes you even more irrelevant in the grand scheme.
That's why I'm getting tired of MMOs anyways. It's just one long boring, linear treadmill after another, with a different paintjob. Many of which feel like I might as well just be playing Dragon Age with MSN open.
