Thinking of switching to SoR - Content + End game?

stav1stav1 Member Posts: 282

I'm thinking of quitting EQ2 and joinning SoR. I guess the main reason i have to leave EQ2 si that i'm not particularly thrilled with doing uber raids as my end game. Similarly i don't really want to engage in the lmited PvE and PvP that WoW has to offer.

I've read a bit about SoR. The skills system sounds particularly interesting as do the mob invasions and reaction to player behaviour. Just wanted to know if the mobs really do set up settlements and invade player territory or whether its just empty hype. Does this form real content in the game? Do ppl think this will be a succesful form of end game?

If anybody wants to list the top 3 things they like about SoR then that would also be appreciated.

#1, of course, the skill system... ability to create your own, custom, actions.

#2, character developement.. ie. skill based system .. say no to template progression.

#3, dynamic world... Critters migrate from season to season, carnivores pray on herbivores, Mantis forest in Spring looks darn purdy, etc...

#4, completely unique and original universe.

I'm have not progressed far enough with the combat related skill trees to be able to talk about the end game in that respect... but I sure like the weapon patterns I picked up at lvl150 2-hand melee crafting :)

The skill system is the great , really allows you to customize your character.  It's been said again and again I know but it really is a fantastic system.

There was a world event where the enemy Kitins were planning an invasion and you saw them setting up camps and stuff.  Players had to harvest and craft items for NPCs which then used the items to equip "guard NPCs" to patrol the cities and forts.  This gave each class something to do.  The harvesters harvested, the fighters and offensive magic users protected the harvesters, the crafters made the packs, and the healers had to heal everyone :).

This went on for about a week until there were full blown invasions in the towns.  Bosses came out and the players really had to defend to the last man.  The only complaint from everyone was the lack of a real in-game storyline for all this... which brings me to a negative aspect of the game.

It lacks a cohesive story in-game.  Npcs don't really interact with you, the missions are basic of the basic and you aren't given a reason to do them.   The website is full of lore and the GMs work hard to give us an ongoing story in the forums... but all of that should be discovered in-game and it breaks the mood when you don't get any feedback for the actions you do.

More positives though:  The developers seem to be listening and they're making that known now more than before.  We've got an upcoming Q&A and there's a wishlist started after each major patch.  I believe, if they have the funding to keep going another 6 months we'll see improvements in all aspects of this game... you can't really say that about some MMOs out there *cough* Galaxies *cough*.

Outposts are coming up too... true they should have been implemented with the retail release but I think a working outpost system(similar to Shadowbane it sounds like) would be a fantastic addition to the game.

One tip is join a guild as soon as you're 40+ in any skill you'll get a lot more out of this game :)

Last invasion a general lead us into the lair of the Kitins, we got alot of information about them, and how to defeat them.

Invasions are getting better and more fun each time, we had an invasion before where we needed to build outposts, and add guards to defend our posts, we needed harvesters, crafters and of course fighters and magicians. It was the biggest fun we ever had..

That all sounds rather promising. Thanks for the answers.

How often do these invasions etc occur?

  • octaocta Member UncommonPosts: 245

Not too often on the American servers unfortunately.  I think there's been a total of 4 or 5 times since September(I haven't been in it that long) not including the fight in the Nexus where it was a faction thing to get a certain item.

Said item was never actually seen in the game and there was no story or reason given as to why the item was important or how it worked until a couple weeks after :(

What I really like about the game is the community, I started to play only few days ago, but have never had problems finding somebody to help my along. I also already have a guild and know many people we usually get together with and go hunting or just sit around and chat.

Of course, the skill system is pretty unique, the ability to create your own skills from modules you "buy" makes it very interesting too. Mob invasions are usually tense and make the player cooperation a neccessity (which I like actually). I cannot think of anything esle right now, but the game is surely worth getting into the 2 week trial image

If you decide to play this game, I will see you back here in 4-8 weeks asking "what is a good game out right now?"
