    1.  Gameplay options- how many ways I can progress my character. Are there other things to do than just fight.

     2.  Grouping- the more the better.

     3. Combat- is it fluid and responsive, is it strategic.

     4. HUD- less is more, I like to see my surroundings not some a stupid GUI covering up half the screen.

     5. Jobs or classes-are they interesting.

  • tristantristan Member UncommonPosts: 13

1-. Interface. Is it a mess? Is it easy to understand how the game is planned? Maps.

2-. Gameplay and graphic engine.  Is it smooth? Is the environment charming for me? The movement must be fluid.

3-. Learning scale. Is it always the same or am I learning from the game step by step?

How about the things you don't look for. I avoid the forums of any new mmo "at all costs". How many of you have loved a game until you visited the forums and "discovered" how much fun you "weren't" having.

Stay away from the forums and form your own opinions.

Character customization - I really have very little patience for games without character customization, and I don't mean changing the color and style of you hair, but full facial, body and clothing customization.  Because if I cannot make the character I want then I don't really care about leveling them up or what method I do it in.

Controls - Especially for combat.  But if I find the controls have a delay or are sticky or clunky, or don't let me attack while moving, then I will not have much intererest.  Because without good controls, who cares about PvP or PvE or anything really, bad controls make for a boring game.

The Setting - Most settings are so derivitive and dull I find them hard to get into.  But without an interest in the setting I can't get interested in doing anything in the game, who cares about story, or objectives or doing anything when the world is so boring.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

    1. Ease of maniupulating the UI so it isn't so ugly like they alllways are.

    2. Performance.  If the game lags, hitches, crashes, and generally badly optimized, then it most likely won't get a whole lot better later on.

    3. Fun factor.  If a game isn't fun or interesting, forget it.

    1) Fun.

    2) As the levels progress the fun factor stays intact.

    3) Are raids easily accessible, or do I have to quit my job to be successful?

    4) Performance. AC back in the day was so fun, but rubberbanded like no other game I've played.

    5) Character customization. EIther it be from gear, level options, or looks. I don't want to be the same as every other archetype I chose.

It's the same criteria as going out with someone. Are they attractive? Are they fun to be with? Is there any substance to them? Do they annoy hell out of me?

The feel of movement.  The first thing you do when you enter the world is walk around a bit.  If that feels wrong its an immediate turnoff.

yep i agree with you on that one.  i dont know how many games i've put down after not even 15-20mins because of the first impressions on movement.   that is key for me.  it has to be "smooth".

  • AstralglideAstralglide Member UncommonPosts: 686

I look for fluidity of the game. For instance, I really like Fallen Earth, but there is still lots of server lag that makes mobs "jump" irradically across the screen.

Also, how customizable is there UI? Again, Fallen Earth has a pretty customizable UI, although I prefer Open UI's such as WoW and WAR.

    A witty saying proves nothing.

    1, story/world

Can I buy into the setting, is it interesting to me and can I lose myself in its world

    2, Art Design

This is very important to me. If the art design isn't to my liking then I won't be able to buy into my character or the world. I'm not talking about graphics and all the nice lighting effects or shadows or textures. That is all well and good but if the art isn't there then I don't care.

3, Is there enough for me to do and can I solo since I play at odd times and I'm not one to spend time lfg'ing until my throat is red and hoarse.

Is there a nice balance between pvp and pve or at least pvp that I can get into when I want.

4, not really huge but a big plus is character customization. I'm not talking about making my skills different from another's. I really don't care if my skill set is a clone of another person's skills. it's what I do with those skills that is important to me. I'm talking about the look of my character and gear. Which goes along with Art Design.

    1. Game world and environment....including ambient sound

If it's not a place I would want to spend a lot of time LOOKING at, then that's immediately one point off the total "score" in my

    head.

    2. User Interface

One of the very first things I do in a game, particularly if there is no tutorial....is thoroughly examine the UI. If the UI is clunky, that's

    strike number 2.

    3. Fluidity of motion (smoothness of animation)

While this isn't necessarily a "game breaker," if the game doesn't have a lot of other things going for it....this is a big turn off if this

    aspect isn't polished.

    4. Character creation options

I see this before even getting INTO the game world, and if it looks cheap, crappy, and lacking....I'm already suspicious of the rest

of the game before I even get a look at everything else. I cannot say enough about how important this particular first impression is

for me.  Incidentally, depending on the game, I'm not talking about number of race and class choices. Some games don't HAVE

"classes," and yet have very good character creation options screens.

Those are my FIRST impression things I notice. After those....the real analysis of gameplay and community begin, but for "first

impressions....I think the above is it for me, mostly.

    Mine are mostly visual things,

    1. Animation, if the animations isnt smooth or feels odd or clunky, it will leave bad impression to me, since we do have to look at them all the time.
    2. Action bars/icons, for an example, I tried out Lotro since I heard that its quite nice PvE game, but when I saw the action bar, my first thought was "whatta hell is that" it had too much extra art that just made it confusing to look.

    3. How well the combat is made, I think thats the most important one, since we are fighting alot in MMO's, and if its not smooth, well it does eat away gaming experience.
    4. Font used in text's ingame. This one isnt so important, I can play the game even if it is the basic font that is used everywhere, but to me its always extra eye candy to have different Font's used.

Really? I mean, I hate people who look upon the animation, the graphics, there are a lot of great games, which don't have any good animations.

The action bar? Come on! Who cares? And the Font? Are you kidding me Doushi?

The combat is the only thing I could really accept.

I look upon the community, not because I like to make friends, but because I want to see people playing the game. I don't wanna log into an account, and play a game alone. There are arcade games for that.

And I always search for different games, I don't want to play ten likewise Lineage II, or WOW, or any fantasy game, or any Sci-Fi game that looks exactly like another game. I want difference.

Same goes for me..... I look for speed and complexity, depth in other word. Game to be simple at fisrt but have ennoufh functions to keep me entertained for a while. I'm not a typical switcher and I dont wanna get bored before I get good, real real good. So anything like overly developed graphics that make it laggy and agrovating is a 5min trial for me.

I'd prefer if some games leave the graphic on the side a little and work on the combat-battle system some more. Seen too many games being done with 1 strategy, 1 type of attack to do it all, it really gets boring fast.

In other words, if I'm not a bit least puzzled when I enter the game, I pbly wont stay.

Lets all be friend's in a war game!

9.)armor look , if armor looks like junk i wont be playing long

10.) armor wep change , if you need go more than 10 lvls with out a new set i wont be playing

why diss the man for stating what HE looks for in a game?

the question was stated what do you look for with 40 players responding theres going to be many diff types of answers.

doushi just stated what he feels is most important to him when he first steps into a game . Which is {was} the joy in MMO's no 2 players had to have the same ideas of greatness

FYI the action bar or UI is one of the first things i look at also it takes up a set % of your screen and will be used 100s of times per game day there for it is a vital part of your gaming

The very first thing i look for is two things, graphics and mechanics. If they are both out to lunch with no key mapping....goodbye.These are two things ANY developer can pull off,so if they don't it is pure cheap or lazy, either way,why on earth would i support them?

I don't need super great graphics but i do want some level of control over my player and i don't want the graphics to look 2d or like paper cutouts. An example of poor graphics is when you hold your mouse over a mob and it appears all glowing like it is not really in the world, like it is copy and pasted in,we know they are, but they don't have to look like it.As to graphics, you can still put in some good detail even if using the lowest form of quality,if you fail both on quality and detail, then it is pure fail.

    1. Design decisions.

Thats what matters most. Does the game is linear? Does it have level caps? Does it strive to hard for balance yet they go for level systems and classes? Does they try to limit players freedom? Does the design decisions ressemble a prison system?

Are the developers trying to tell me how to play their game through the design decisions?

    2. Does their game will be printing money on their cash shop?

How abusive is their cash shop.

  • ZilverrugZilverrug Member Posts: 132

    1. The quality of the user interface: does it make the game needlessly complex?

    2. How long it lasts before I enjoy the game (assuming that will happen at all).

Think about it this way.  Who cares about the community if the game looks and plays like %$^#&?  MOST people don't enjoy playing lousy looking games.  What are most people doing when playing a game?  They're looking at their character, using the UI, fighting things...if those aren't well done, who cares about the people?  You don't need a game at all if you just enjoy chatting with people.  You can do that for free.  EVERY MMO has good communities and nice people playing somewhere.

A MMO needs to be good on its own first.  All the basics need to be solid to even attract enough people to call it a community.  You might look for DIFFERENT as you say.  Well, most people look for FUN and good design first.
