I don't really see the point of making a thread "I quit"... but I see less of a point in banning them, what is the point of banning a player that's quitting? Oh, damage control.
It does influence other readers towards the same way though, especially if they are already hesitant on continuing their subscription and they see similar threads daily, a brainwash to make you quit, not really something an official forums would benefit from allowing, especially at such a fragile state and crucial phase.
"I Quit" posts are usually (in my experience) just troll posts in disguise.
It is just a poorly constructed loud mouthed way of whining when cancelling your sub and not logging in doesn't feel like you actually accomplished anything (though, I would be suprised if the majority of people who create such posts actually cancel thier subs before creating such a post).
A well-thought critisism of the game and reasoning for leaving would be ok in my book, but thats hardly ever existant for any game.
People just need to grow up and speak with thier wallets from the get go and you wouldn't have these issues.
I wonder how many of those people are really quitting and not just trying to start fires. There are still allot of people playing for all the quitters that are out there!
That's hardly surprising. Given the serious problems that STO is experiencing(not to mention the lack luster reviews), I'm surprised that they waited this long to start clamping down. Cryptic is attempting to keep as many players as possible(quite understandable), and one of their chosen methods appears to be to limit negative comments(also understandable). The official forums are just that the official(private) forums. They run by what ever rules Cryptic imposes. But in this day and age, there are FAR more sources for such a game than the official forums.

Sure, there are tons more people playing that quitting. After all, it isn't like 3 weeks in to live they had a desperate fire sale cutting the price by 20% and tripling the included game access time - oh wait, they did have to do that. STO is just another dead man walking, just like Champions. Crytpic, where IPs go to die.
There was a steady stream disappointed that the game was not what they were hoping for, handled in the usual internet forum fashion. That seems to be the case with every MMO these days.
The whole 60 day debacle is what really made it explode. Perhaps they should do a better job of addressing that issue, before it's not too late.

A lot of MMO official forums delete such posts, just as they delete talk of other MMOs, delete off topic posts that aren't in the off topic section, delete threads that discuss admin actions that were taken etc.
There are rules to all official forums it really isn't that surprising. The forums SHOULD be used for constructive discussion about the game, balance issues, game play issues, ideas, changes, bugs etc. The forums SHOULDN'T be used to whine, cry, troll etc.
The focus should really be on why so many people who would clearly not enjoy the game bought the game just to later make a point of how unhappy they are. They could of been smart and thought about what the game would be like and not purchased it (like myself) so as to not have to make I quit posts in the first place.

I guess the OP thought this news was so common, unsurprising, and logical that he had to report it. I'm glad you made this post, though, because it makes a lot of sense.
Official Forums for any game are not an "Open" forums and are subject to as much censorship as the developers feel warranted. There is a lot to not like Cryptic about....but this is not one of them.
I played the beta, and at the time, i kept trying to give creative and suggestive feedback and got nothing but badmouthed for it by the fanbois who kept saying "its still in beta" i fought long and hard to get my suggestions taken seriously. animated loadscreens to increase some sense of immersion, functional bridges with navigation (instead of sector space), replicators for selling loot (instead of having to go all the way back to earth) and using the big screen for mission taking and turn ins. And i fought for death penalties, skill caps that make sense and even restricting player ships to their profession. Mostly i wanted more diplomacy, forgive me, but the federation NEVER went into a system and just started shooting up the place, which is all this game is, a co-op single-player space shooter.
well i couldnt cancel my preorder fast enough. and now that all the reviews are in, im right. the game is unfinished, it repetitive, the ground combat and AI is a joke, it lacks a huge chunk of requisite core content, and the rest of the community (those who dont buy hand-drawn pencil sketches of naked councellor troi for 30$ a pop.. dont laugh, ive sold quite a few) are leaving in droves.
personally, with cryptics reputation for greed (ie trying to call a patch an expansion so they can charge people for it just the most recent example), lousy customer relations, which means usually refusing to even awknowlege their communities concerns.. couldnt happen to a more deserving group of jerks.
I don't think this is a marketing ploy as much as it is a way for moderators to easily be able to handle the flow of comments at the game. "I Quit" Threads really don't serve any purpose on a game forum. They don't contribute anything and they just invite hatred and contempt.

I will say something a fanboy never will. Your reservations about the game have been validated.

Have you got crystal balls? Can I borrow one?
I will asume that is about my last paragraph. I don't have future telling abilities, and will avoid the pun itself for moderation reasons. What I do have is plenty of information freely available on the web about any given MMO before it releases. This includes reviews, information directly from the company, and open beta direct from the players information. Combine it all together and you can get a solid sense for how a game will play, and what it won't include. I also stand by my important rule of never preorder anything ever. Wait and make sure it is a solid product before sending any money it's way.
There was so much information out that specifically told how STO would play as a game and what all of its short-comings would be. To ignore all those and then to be disappointed when all that information turned out to be correct is a bit silly.
I wasn't suggesting that masses of threads of this kind was a good thing, perhaps it would have been better if they'd deleted unconstructive quit threads from the very beginiing.
After the recent events and them having to delete all those threads too, it now seems more of a reaction to that.

HAHA where there that many "I quit STO" threads lol ?
Is that your opinion?;)
I certainly agree with Cryptic for doing this.

They might actually go back and play the game they LOVE and then become haters themselves
Its a desparate ploy because of the massive amount of negative reviews

WHAT? BANNED TROLLING????? How could they!!!!! I am raging at their prevention and banning of trolls! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!
