The problem being that guilds take themselves so seriously it becomes a joke that I just can't handle. To me a game is a game, and it's soul purpose is to entertain me and provide me with fun. When guilds start requiring meetings, or certain play times, or certain play amounts then it is just silly. When they have two pages worth of bullet pointed rules it becomes a joke. When they want me to pay a monthly money amount even though I never use any items from the guild chests, it is silly. Not every guild does this. There are guilds that are just groups of people who don't expect you to do anything other than to have fun. My LOTRO guild is like this. Laid back people, no requirements. Heck, you can leave for a while and come back and you won't be kicked.

They have 1 single 'confirmed' female in the guild. The men all want her. Ultimately, it brings about drama.
It doesn't matter what they look like. They may even go so far as to post 1-2 pic's on the guild website (which could be old, taken from 'flattering' angles etc.,..) They usually have 'porn star' voices in Vent/TeamSpeak
I am of a guild that is very small, very overran by leeches....But I like the guild master, he is cool to run with....I have a bunch of ,dare I say it, friends who I run with in raids (lvl 70 raids atm) so I'm not in a guild for runs. Friends are for runs, guilds are just for show. Enough said.
I've pretty much given up on guilds since they mostly started requiring voice chat. I'm a sports nut, so I usually have a game on in the background, or music if not sports. I don't need to hear people acting like drunken marines with tourette's syndrome the entire time I'm playing, either.
I remember years ago that i totally was against the guild system,i felt it had no design, just a heap of junk setup that would not help the game community. Many years later i still feel it is not designed properly. I am no longer totally against it,but what i have seen from guild leaders is just bad,VERY few deserve to be running a guild.Last i played FFXI about 8 months ago,i ran into a Linkshell, and incredibly the best leader i have ever seen.Every single day he logged in he addressed ALL the players and wanted to make sure everyone had direction and had a chance to join in to get things done.originally when i joined i just thought he was like all the others a leader trying to invite anyone and everyone to build numbers, with no meaning. This is the huge problem with guilds, the leaders,99.9% of them should not be guild leaders, they do not care about the players and the guild ,they only care about selfish reasons. If you are going to start recruiting 100 players, then you better make sure you are ready to address those 100 players. If you are only able to handle a small guild, nothing wrong with that at all, just make sure you address the players needs and what each should do for each other and the guild. You want to know what i am seeing in guilds right now?nothing more than a chat room, players constantly congratulate each other every time they gain a level,is that why we join a guild? The leader should pop into the guild and say hello, what do we need done today?Look over the players, maybe the players do not understand or know what they should be doing to be a MEMBER of the guild.A guild is not a solo hangout to yell DING level 30...grats grats. We need some better leaders and better guild structures to make them anything worthwhile, otherwise they are just a glorified chat room.
As with any organization the better the leadership, the bigger the organization can get before collapsing on itself.
I was lucky in that the very first guild I joined in a MMORPG was led by two very nice people who just wanted to have fun and did not stress out over stupid stuff. When they left the game, they were replaced by a guy who is a hotel manager in RL. This guy knew how to organize, delegate and when to make the tough decisions. We were able to grow to over 200 members without the usual problems. Unfortunately a promotion at work caused the leader to need to take long breaks from the game and without his leadership the guild split into factions. The guild lasted for 3 years without much of drama but in the end that was too good to last.
Best guild I ever got to be a part of was in Dark Age of Camelot. We stuck together, (a core of about 12 people and as many as 250 at one point), for almost 4 years. Everyone was laid back and did their own thing, but each of us had the habit of throwing out open invites to anyone that cared to join us. I PL'd lowbies to get them up to speed and would spend hours salvaging loot for guildies while they farmed as everyone chatted in vent. As we all went different ways with our real lives the guild slowly died and it still makes me feel 'homesick' to stop by the forums that haven't been posted on in over a year.
I've definitely had the misfortune of being in guilds/clans where the absolute worst kinds of people were in charge. I understand wanting to be respectful but we had a GM that broke up an alliance we were in because this woman that played with us from another guild used the term Black to describe someone instead of African-American and her home guild refused to ban her. The GM who didn't bother to read any words in alliance chat but the word black missed out on the problem that this woman was from Morocco and the guy she was talking about was from Spain and it wasn't really any of his business how she chose to describe people of her own race. Just being contradicted made this nutcase flip out and removed every guild from his alliance that didn't agree with him. The worst part was, people still allied themselves with this jackass...
My best guild experiences came in preNGE SWG, because there was never any pressure to raid or compete against other guilds. I was in several great guilds that had a great social atmosphere, player cities where you could log on and see guild members doing their thing, and all the guild events we did, from missions to social gatherings to instances to pvp, we did for fun, not because we felt like we needed the latest items to stay competitive.
I've also had great guild experiences in Horizons (now Istaria) and Planetside.
Horizons and Planetside were polar opposite from a gameplay point of view, yet I had great guild experiences in both. Planetside was an all PvP MMOFPS. Horizons had no PvP, was crafter oriented, and could almost be called "carebear".
In WoW the whole focus of the game, and most of the guilds, is large raid dungeons and acquiring the next loot items. With exceptions, that is the most important thing for most players.
I nearly pissed myself laughing over this, yeah it's not so funny when it first goes down but after the fireworks have gone you gotta admit that laughing at and mimicking the raging fool is fun as hell.
I feel the same in all cases, when I found Old Timers guild it was to good to be true. The only thing that we require is that you have to be 25+ in age. I know there is alot of grief about age restrictions but it works really well for us and we have all types of players so its easy to find members with the same play styles through about 10- 15 different mmos. The idea was to create an enviroment were adults can enjoy their gaming without having to be screeched at by an over caffeinated 12 yr militaristic elitist jerk (which in one guild that actually happened to me). I've been with this guild for 5 years now and I doubt I'll ever leave. motto: "Laid back, not so seriuos, all about the fun"
Other things that bug me about guilds is: Forced grouping/raiding, if I only have an hour or 2 I can't commit to raiding that much. Military style guilds. Where if you want to talk to the guild leader you have to send 10 messages to the chain of command before your granted an audience. Subscription memberships: You have to pay $50 to be an elite member. /cough....(Goon Squad) or your just canon fodder. Required equipment/gear: If you don't have the atleast tier 6 epic gear then your crap and you can't join this guild of elitist.
i've seen the old timer's guild members around different games and if it wasn't for me running with some game friends from back "way when" I would have applied.
The age restriction was actually plus for me as well as the laid back attitude.
Yeah, I would have applied myself to Old Timers since I more than qualify (ahem) but I usually game with my son who's 17 and they make no exceptions to the policy. I understand why, but I think I might have had some fun with them, esp in LotRO.
Typically in the bigger games one or two members who are parents start an un-offical under the 25+ guild to get all the youngins together (well atleast for WAR), so they can play with friends and family on alts. Its true what alot people say that there are quite a few under aged players that are far more mature than most adults.
Being the chapter/guild Leader for Warhammer online (Destro side)at release with over 800 members starting out is not as easy as it sounds. Its like trying to herd cats over the internet. The best way to have good leadership with that many players is to have good officers who are all on the same page. Believe me we've had our faults and fights with the members but it usually works itself out.
Agreed #3 is especially telling. Family guilds aside I think some people forget about humor when playing the game--nothing worse then utter silence after an especially funny repartee
I remember in WoW the guild leader of a guild I devoted everything to (I mean Everything, until I started quitting my ally and finally quit WoW...) He was a sensible guy and all; I liked him enough. Hell, I got around with almost everyone... but on one of my WoW breaks (76 druid and still at a near GM Rank,) they raided some place... I'm not sure on the details, but he pulled a #1 on my best friend in the guild, causing her to quit. Honestly it shook me... and though I didn't quit right away, I did avoid my main to avoid the guild save for my old guildmates. Eventually I was kicked for inactivity but hey, I'm gonna say a phrase that could get stuck in your head for eternity thanks to Kurt Vonnegut: So it goes.
Ironically... though the guild had some memorable members... it wasn't the most memorable guild... ever.
When I was levelling a BE Mage, I was guilded into a guild whose name even told me I was in the right place: Price of Justice. The people cared there... but we weren't family. It was fine... I didn't want family at this point... I wanted to play with laid back people that weren't detatched. Three people plus another made up the guildbase for the most of the time. I'll name them because they're awesome. Seyran, Viv, Callycat and Ephriam. And Corrun. There were a few more later on I guess, like a guy with many alts but I can only remember the name of the mage alt with a compromising name. Still, that was it... alittle more than a group but that was all I needed. Of course, they moved to another server later for the most part and well life happened, but PoJ was still the very best WoW guild I've been in.
There were some other horde raiding guilds... mainly bad ones from my experience. There was, however, a couple like PoJ... Dark Empire was one of them, which actually, consisted of members from a previous guild I was in called Despair, that, believe it or not were alot like PoJ's members, mainly because the remaining members joined this guild also. Either way, the same deal, they were friendly people, not elitist, and well... for lack of a better phrase, great guildies.
Ironically, on an ally character, I found a great guild right away too, that was full of nice people like the previously mentioned guilds. RDA Apocalypse.
From what I just said, I've noticed a pattern. Not only were the best guilds I've joined on a PvP server... but they weren't really that big of raiding guilds. I mean, Dark Empire was but they weren't obsessed (the bad kind of obsessed) with it. I've been in my share of uptight raiding guilds that required I made a game I stopped playing in favor of other games into a job. They were... uptight. I mean... some were laid back but it was mainly "You have to raid, you have to get geared, you have to do this and god forbid you don't do enough dps." Okay, some may like it... and it probably only felt like work for me because I was exploring other MMOs and cheating on WoW for our spike in arguments concerning the way games are meant to be played. I guess there's a tremendous reward in killing the Lich King nowdays... but not when everyone else does it. I'd rather be known for being the deadliest revolver user in a shooter and I was unconquerable at one point by all but one person who also conquers me when me and her disagree. Yes, honey.
People that put themselves above others put me in a bad mood. http://www.surrealtwilight.com/index.php ^Has nothing to do with that retarded Vampire Novel Series, I swear!^
Reason #1 and #2 have been my experience in about every guild I've ever been in. The only real comfort that I take from this article and it's replies is that it seems a lot of people have had similar experiences. Just about every guild I have ever been in has either nothing at all going on with dead silence over the chat channels or there is an inner circle which if you are not a member of you will never even be invited to do any kind of group content unless they are totally desperate and short a person for run and if they do take you you'll be totally ignored on the run unless you make a mistake on something.
It seems to be getting worse along those lines to the point at least for me that I'm begining to think about quitting mmo's altogether when they all turn into nothing but a single player experience for me and I end up being locked out of a good amount of game content because I can't find any sort of a steady group of people to run the content with and then totally locked out of the "endgame"
Agreed #3 is especially telling. Family guilds aside I think some people forget about humor when playing the game--nothing worse then utter silence after an especially funny repartee
but remember funny is highly subjective.
You might think it's funny but not everyone else might agree.
One size funny does not fit all.

Agreed-- hence the reason why 3 fits from my perspective. My Funny --vs-- Their Perception I laugh-- they don't Makes it uncomfortable if it happens a lot.
I honestly find most of the guilds I've been in completely useless. However, I am a very casual player (yeah all you hard core folks can start hating on me now) so I don't really mind. I like to see guild chat, and every once in a while contribute. I guess that says more about me being alone in a world than anything, but that is really all I need. I can figure everything else out on my own. And if I group up with some of my guild members, even better.
It's a proven historical fact that beer saved humankind.
1. Similar Interests, IE: Hardcore pvp. 2. Ventrilo/Teamspeak required, I prefer vent, but either one is fine. As someone else posted, he doesn't use voice chat and leaves guilds that ignore him for it, all I can say is this makes me very happy. I wish more people got the clue and did this in some previous guilds I was part of. Only wanting to be in a pvp oriented guild, you cannot be successful w/o voice chat, so this goes back to #1.
I'm pretty sure you're reffering to my post...as I said similar comments about it...But there's the issue. I've been in guilds that are pure PvE (Which I enjoy the most) and I have issues with Teamspeak/Ventrillo and for no reason. 95% of the time when I actually join the channel, there's absolutely nothing constructive going on in the chat. It's nothing that couldn't be discussed in game, and nothing that really is urgent that you needed to get a message across right away (Like you might in a PvP battle).
If the guild is not going to use the Teamspeak/Ventrillo server for anything actually constructive game-wise, I do not see the reasoning behind requiring it of players, and worse yet, ignoring them for not having it. But many guilds do, and make no use of it.
Nice article. I enjoyed it. Take the following remarks as random meanderings, because I enjoyed the article. (Sorry, but it is t3h intarw3bz, so you have to say everything important at least 3 times.)
I find it tiresome when everyone curses. I am 40-ish, married with children, and to be honest does everyone need to say dick jokes every 2 minutes. And do we really need to have a "That's what she said!" after every possible remark someone says that could be--if you really stretched yourself--interpreted in some sexual manner.
I guess I am going after the PG guild and teamspeak guilds here. I loathe teamspeak with a passion that I won't even try to express. As far as PG goes, why not? Dick jokes stop being funny after the 1000th time. True story....
I'd like to add another category that annoys me to no end. It's probably the extreme opposite of #1. The guild that talks a big game when trying to recruit you. After you join you notice that all this guild does is use the game as a fancy chat room. They barely play the game, instead they stand around in a major hub telling bad jokes. I'm not the Teamspeak nazi but I do expect the guild to actually do something together. I had this problem a lot in Lineage 2 and FFXI and once in EvE.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own. -- Herman Melville

Yes, but Teamspeak nazis and actually playing the game are two different things. Although, I do agree with you, there are guilds that use Teamspeak just to do exactly what you said, except in voice chat instead of text chat.
#3 is why I solo. My humordoes not translate in chat. I am very sarcastic, but it just comes across as nasty or snide. The only guild I ever enjoyed was in LoTRo, and it was so laid back as to be comatose, but very friendly. Otherwise I have been in guilds of RL friends that ranged from casual to having to be sponsered to even attempt to get in. When people here talk about the friendships they've made, and the relationships they've built, I just scratch my head and think, how the hell do you do that with total strangers you cant even see face to face? Maybe I'm too old (44) to understand making friends online, but my feeling of estrangement is the major reason I solo despite enjoying the world of MMOs.
no offence to those who are under 20 and act mature
but many times in this situation the immaturity can get annoying at best and down right game breaking at worse . not to say that this cant happen with an older group of players
and im talking about anything rangeing from guild chat floods to spontaneously playing anoying music over vent or team speak to making a general nuisance of there selves to partaking in griefing( and yes this does reflect on the members of the guild when a member does it) just because they think its cool or that others would find it to be cool or impressive
guess what its not
and again i apologize to those under 20 who do act mature
have you ever joind a guild that was easy going and friendly and cooperative that suddenly decided to become a Raid guild or decided to merge with a raid guild
and then suddenly wanted you to be such and such leve by such and such date or your out
with absalutly no reguard to how you enjoy your game you absalutly had to do it if you wanted to continue playing with your "friends" in the guild
this has happen to me more then ounce and i hate every time it happens because im a dedicated crafter/gatherer/explorer in that order and forced power leveling is a terrible turn off to me i dont care for end game i want to enjoy what the game has to offer and not rush it
and i tend to give my stuff freely to my guild members
how ever and yes i admit this might be rare but it has happen to me
i hate when the guild acts like you owe them every thing you make when they want it instantly
........ im probably not explaining this well basically they wanted me to make everything for any one in the guild instantly
no mater what im doing at the time i had to drop it and make peoples stuff and never ask for payment no mater what or how rare the mats are and i have to provide my own mats to do it
again this may be a rare ocasion as i have only bean in one guild that expected that of its crafters
#4 Phantom PVP guild
another guild that was friendly and coopritive and worked well with eachother
the leader decides to leave the game
the next person in line decided to constantly have the guild at war with another guild at all times because he/she thinks it will bring excitement to the game
sometimes with informing the guild members and some times without
#5 guild has more then 1-2 leaders and 1 of them decide to start a drama that splits the guild
E.g. you help us get the good stuff and in return we the leaders and officers will help you get the good stuff after
and you help them get there stuff be it in dungeon or raid loot or something crafted
and they never up hold there part of the deal constantly stating we will do it latter and latter never comes around till your maxed level and it just dosnt matter any more
ya that one gets to me and it happens more often then one would think :P
(yes i dumbed down this one as i had what i consider to be too much typed out hear lol :P )
ok for this one i feel i need to do some explaining
im in my mid 30s and have multiple degrees none of them in spelling or literature i also have an above average iq as do most gamers i have meat or made time to actually meat in RL and needles to say (for those who have seen my posts) spelling and grammer have never and probably will never be my strong point . hell its so bad i run every post i do through atleast 3 different spell checks and stuff still squeaks by
and i tend to have a real short fuse when a guild member decides to be demeaning or look down upon me or become an absolute prat just because i spelled something wrong.
i usually tend to go with a treat me with respect and i will do the same in return attitude that spelling nazies tend to defy at all costs
and i hate seeing them go after other guild members as well
just because one has trouble with spelling does not make them any less knowledgeable then you or any one else
and just to throw it in there
the greatest guild experience i have ever had was on SWG pre-nge but then the NGE came along and most left the game and the rest slowly bled out of the game over the next year
now i realize that some people may disagree with me on these factors so again i say its just my opinion and nothing more
I'd like to add another category that annoys me to no end. It's probably the extreme opposite of #1. The guild that talks a big game when trying to recruit you. Can you give me the name of that guilds? Seriously, would love to see at least one guild like that. Why can I never find someting like this?

People that put themselves above others put me in a bad mood.

^Has nothing to do with that retarded Vampire Novel Series, I swear!^

You might think it's funny but not everyone else might agree.

Your forgot #5. People who chronically complain about guilds, but never bother to put the work forward to create their own.

This is but a brief parting.
I find it hard to believe that people actually sit down and take the time to type this kind of stuff...
I find it even harder to believe that MMORPG.com is paying them for it...
Not trying to be a jerk. I dunno, maybe it's just me. Looks like the majority liked it, lol.

Maybe I'm too old (44) to understand making friends online, but my feeling of estrangement is the major reason I solo despite enjoying the world of MMOs.
i have bean in good and bad guilds throughout my gaming life
and i have noted some things that tend to turn me off from a guild
and since we are on the subject i will list mine
hope this dosnt offend any one as it is just my opinions
#1 guild is filled with people under 20
no offence to those who are under 20 and act mature
but many times in this situation the immaturity can get annoying at best and down right game breaking at worse . not to say that this cant happen with an older group of players
and im talking about anything rangeing from guild chat floods to spontaneously playing anoying music over vent or team speak to making a general nuisance of there selves to partaking in griefing( and yes this does reflect on the members of the guild when a member does it) just because they think its cool or that others would find it to be cool or impressive
guess what its not
and again i apologize to those under 20 who do act mature
#2 Forced leveling
have you ever joind a guild that was easy going and friendly and cooperative that suddenly decided to become a Raid guild or decided to merge with a raid guild
and then suddenly wanted you to be such and such leve by such and such date or your out
with absalutly no reguard to how you enjoy your game you absalutly had to do it if you wanted to continue playing with your "friends" in the guild
this has happen to me more then ounce and i hate every time it happens because im a dedicated crafter/gatherer/explorer in that order and forced power leveling is a terrible turn off to me i dont care for end game i want to enjoy what the game has to offer and not rush it
#3 guilds crafting BIT#% or slave
like i said in the previous one i like crafting
and i tend to give my stuff freely to my guild members
how ever and yes i admit this might be rare but it has happen to me
i hate when the guild acts like you owe them every thing you make when they want it instantly
........ im probably not explaining this well basically they wanted me to make everything for any one in the guild instantly
no mater what im doing at the time i had to drop it and make peoples stuff and never ask for payment no mater what or how rare the mats are and i have to provide my own mats to do it
again this may be a rare ocasion as i have only bean in one guild that expected that of its crafters
#6 L33T Speak
annoying as all hell and horrifically stupid to boot
#7 empty promises
E.g. you help us get the good stuff and in return we the leaders and officers will help you get the good stuff after
and you help them get there stuff be it in dungeon or raid loot or something crafted
and they never up hold there part of the deal constantly stating we will do it latter and latter never comes around till your maxed level and it just dosnt matter any more
ya that one gets to me and it happens more often then one would think :P
(yes i dumbed down this one as i had what i consider to be too much typed out hear lol :P )
#8 spelling nazies
ok for this one i feel i need to do some explaining
im in my mid 30s and have multiple degrees none of them in spelling or literature i also have an above average iq as do most gamers i have meat or made time to actually meat in RL and needles to say (for those who have seen my posts) spelling and grammer have never and probably will never be my strong point . hell its so bad i run every post i do through atleast 3 different spell checks and stuff still squeaks by
and i tend to have a real short fuse when a guild member decides to be demeaning or look down upon me or become an absolute prat just because i spelled something wrong.
i usually tend to go with a treat me with respect and i will do the same in return attitude that spelling nazies tend to defy at all costs
and i hate seeing them go after other guild members as well
just because one has trouble with spelling does not make them any less knowledgeable then you or any one else
and just to throw it in there
the greatest guild experience i have ever had was on SWG pre-nge but then the NGE came along and most left the game and the rest slowly bled out of the game over the next year
now i realize that some people may disagree with me on these factors so again i say its just my opinion and nothing more
Can you give me the name of that guilds? Seriously, would love to see at least one guild like that. Why can I never find someting like this?
