The game is certainly not dead hehe, and you will see other players...whether you want to or not.

Well by looking at the other thread where the person was posting active playerbase, he said EU server was about 2k active playerbase, and US was around 3k i think.
I just bought a new computer and really want to play this game, but with such a vast land mass and 2k active on eu, that really seems low to me. That is the only thing holding me back, i can handle FPS full loot or whatever, but really this active low playerbase for such a huge land mass is really putting me of.

I think you'll soon be thankful for the lesser playerbase right now. Most times you see people at the least opportune times.
and is the gameplay good i saw videos and stuff that looked decent. i dont care about the gfx and animations atm since they are working on them
TBH, the game play is sick. If you like skill-based combat, this game is for you. It might look simple but it's a blast because you have to actually aim and strategize etc. SO much fun!

Be Paranoid!! This is not to scare you but a good tactic to follow to keep yourself alive, as much as possible. The number of players is about right. Too many more and then the game would be unbareable in my opinion.
The player base as a whole is very mixed imo. I typically stay off the general chat channels since most of the times it is a bunch of immuture boys ranting. I had a great time soloing but the game is much better if you join a clan.
As daarco said i also advice first to do some research before you jump into Darkfall its hardcore with harsh enviroment and not your avarage mmo.
So be warned if game is to difficult or to harsh hehe.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
I would suggest picking Human if you like to see players. I picked Ork and I might see one other player per day. The game overall has players but it feels dead for the majority of your stay.
Humans seem to be the most popular race. As an alfar, I see very few people unless I travel to other lands. In fact, most of my deaths are at the hands of fellow alfars. We get bored with no "reds" to fight, so we turn on eachother, lol. I'm not an "attack first" kind of gamer, so I tend to get caught off guard by gankers. It's hard to shake that mentality that you shouldn't attack fellow blues. In Darkfall, anyone can kill anyone. And most DF gamers are pure PK, kill everyone, teabag your corpse, take no prisoners types.

Guess you probably should have left the starter areas, huh??
Um I see a ton of players in the dwarf lands as well on NA1. Everyday I see a ton of players and there are new players joining everyday. And it's not as hardcore as people say, sure you will get ganked and such but in order to not get pissed off about it, make sure youre banking your stuff often. I laugh at people that get ganked with 100+ wood/ore/reagents on them. Should never be outside the tower limits with that much stuff on you, it just isn't worth it.
I saw a guy get ganked with 800 reagents and of course he cried, but damn son don't be a moron and you won't have to resort to whining. He probably rage quit for a day or two.
Be smart, play with HEADPHONES, and you'll do fine. I'm constantly avoiding ganks because I can hear mounts and footsteps from far away.
Hint: Player run speed is faster and quicker sounding than most mob run speeds. Keep this in mind when farming and you'll survive a whole lot more. And be careful in NPC cities when you're in a clan.

The headset tip is probably the best tip you can give anyone for any online game fps or mmo alike.I cant count the times i was accused of hacking in CS because i use a headset vs regular speakers.Headset's bleed out all the noise in your house and lets you focus on the game itself.
As for Darkfall...im curious when/if they will ever release the game in cd format.I prefer it over the download but if they dont release the cd format of the game soon ill probably just stop waiting and if nothing else give it a 7 day trial.
I often go around the world during crazy hours (like 5 AM), going from hamlet to hamlet stealing its resources, and it's rare to see an empty hamlet, even at that time.
This is the political map: darkfallinfo.com/pmap/map/ (the smaller circles are hamlets, the bigger ones are cities - the latter ones are way more crowed than hamlets). The main continent is perfectly populated (almost everyday I roam around the continent to kill geared people and its rare for me to have less than 10 fights per hour) but Nif (the ice island) is pretty dead IMO. PvE even becomes almost inviable during weekends primetime unless you can defend yourself (or go hunt with some friends).
Also never EVER listen to mmluva, she's probably the biggest carebear that Darkfall has. She avoids pvp at all costs (and keeps killing goblins during the whole day) and then keeps saying that the game doesn't have PvP. I have around 1500/600 PvE/PvP kills and that is a pretty freaking good ratio for a pvp game, once you consider that it takes me 10 seconds to kill a mob and it respawns almot automatically, while a PvP fight sometimes last up to 10 minutes and, well, players don't have a fixed spawn
Just two pieces of advice for you that i'd consider crucial:
1- Develop paranoia. Use headphones and always listen carefully to the sound (take the ambient sound off), pay A LOT of attention, and if you hear spell casting/ running/ mounts, HIDE or start running, depending on the geometry of the place you're located at.
2- Learn how to play correctly. This isn't the type of game where doing the best thing you can isn't really much better than the thing you do by intuition. Do a shitload of research, ask the vets, gather information. If you keep killing goblins/hobgoblins all by yourself, you'll get NOWHERE. There's people who have been farming for a whole month (and have 3000+ PvE kills) and still can't afford reagents to train all they want, while there's people who know what to do and with THREE hours of farming can afford a whole week of spell casting. Just to show you some numbers:
Hunting hobgoblins: 0.27 gold/sec
Gathering wood: 0.6 gold/sec
Hunting menhir custodians: 1.66 gold/sec
Hunting iklits: 2.77 gold/sec
Hunting high-end mobs: 100.0 gold/sec (but you have to share it with your group - usually 4~5 people)
For instance, gathering wood is safer/easier than hunting hobgoblins, and iklits are WEAKER than menhir custodians. If you know how to hunt high-end mobs, it's even easier than hunting menhirs all by yourself.
Now every hour of high-end mob farming (I usually do it with 2 people) equals to 122.2 hours of mmoluv's hobgoblin farming. Now you can finally stop wondering why she never stops pve'ing

Definately busier around the newbie areas now, can be hard to find a spawn not camped. Thankfully my time in the starter areas is drawing to a conclusion in the next week.
Here's a chart that shows the different races and how popular they are. Human is indeed the most popular, with Orks/Dwarves being the least popular: http://darkfallinfo.com/pmap/index.php?page=serverstats Beware though, in this game you don't necessarily want to see other people. If you do, there's a good chance they will try to kill you if they can. I'm human but I moved out of humanlands and am operating out of elflands because of this fact.
That is a fantastic chart, lots of good info. Thanks holdenhamlet
As a human, i did the same thing and moved out to both dwarf and elf lands depending on the title quest i was working on. Found elf lands to be the safest overall, with some great mob camps.

i think many people are coming to this game with wow mindset- " i was a thousand ppl in town".
trust me if you have 20 people near you in DF then you are seriously in trouble remember the hardcore pvp rules. Can you handle the full loot rules if every 10 steps someone ganks you ?

This makes a lot of sense. The game would be even more of a gankfest with a huge amount of players. I think DF is getting close to the optimum amount we want.
Comments
everytime I got to a city I see 15-20 people to come out and zerg me, Pop is rising, not dying and atm it is pretty high.
There's only two servers, EU and NA.
The game is certainly not dead hehe, and you will see other players...whether you want to or not.

I actually think the population's just about right on NA1.
Also make sure to read up on Darkfall, it is not as other MMOs : )
