For those doubting the future of Final Fantasy XI due to recent rumors floating about, fear not! At this year's VanaFest, which celebrated eight years of Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix announced a whopping three new scenarios for the venerable MMOG which will all release this year.
Not much was revealed about the new scenarios, other than their titles and release dates, which are: Vision of Abyssea, which is set to launch this summer, followed by Scars of Abyssea and Heroes of Abyssea, both of which have no release date attached at this time.
In addition to the three new scenarios, Final Fantasy XI will also see a bump in level cap to level 99 and the introduction of Odin and Alexander summons for players to call on in battle.
Additional details are available over at FFXIVCore. You can also view a splash site for the new add-ons here.

Very nice.
The increase to a Level 99 cap is something I am very pleased to see, finally the "true" FF level cap will be able to be reached by the playerbase. Always felt so strange to me being stuck at 75.
I might have to resub my account after these changes are implemented.
Amazing amazing amazing.
I never thought pup would get an A in h2h. I haven't played in over a year, but all of this content/changes got me to resub right away.
wonder how Odin will be handled, Odin was always a one hit kill summon, that was random and uncontroled. In his few controled fights he had a more prodictable lance attack
I can't imagine having to grind out 24 more levels, especially with how mind shattering hard it is to get a group. I guess server mergers will help, but you still have all those Japanese players that are unwilling to part with NA players due to language barriers. Getting to level 75/37 was hard enough, now you have to get to 99/49.
Jeez,, you guys must be masochists or something. The highest I ever got was a level 61 Paladin and I played for a year and a half! Of course, I played back in 2003/late-2004...
How can you guys seriously be excited about 24 more levels?

Amazing. Raising the level cap will certainly please many.
I'm eagerly awaiting how the new subjob cap is going to work? Imagine the class combos at 99/49!... Holy shit!
wow level cap to 99, I never thought id ever see that. I just have one question what will being level 99 do to all the raid bosses, Will they just all be a walk in the park now? Just a thought I have been done with FFXI for a long time now.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
Actually yes, FFXI players requires masochistic tendencies whether it is learned or born with. Or just really really patient, depend on the player.
Personally, FFXI have taught me patience, skillful strategic thinking, and last but not least turning me into a masochist.
When a game tortures you and you like it, there must be something there.
This game requires way too much time to play. I liked it for awhile, but it's pretty damn boring. You wait around forever and a day to get a party together, then when you finally do, you wait around some more for someone to pull one enemy to fight, which gives crap exp.
And then... you do that over and over and over and over and over.
I'm bored just thinking about it.
Its not neccessarily masochistic nature, but an enjoyment of a game, and having patients. From what I have seen most FF11 players (as well as I) enjoy the journey and the depth of the game, and dont care how long it takes to reach MAX level. Its not about getting to end game all the time, but the journey to the end game. So what if it mite take you a year to get to that max level, at least you will not run out of things to do. I was having so much fun grouping and meeting people it made it so that I did not care to much about getting to end game FAST,My best memories are playing FF11, and I have played a lot of the other mmos out there too..FF11 does not get the credit it really deserves, most mmos are more of a rat race than anything else its all the "Get to end game, get the epic gear, Start some alts". FF11 is a TRUE mmoRPG(along with Lotro)...imo. I really hope they just merge most the servers and consolidate the population so its not so spread out, that would be killer. and i would really think about subing again until ff14. all in all the old saying holds true "its not everyones cup of ______"
I can't even begin to describe how awesome, and much needed, these updates are. The raising of the level cap from 75 to 99 isn't even the main thing I'm excited about. You know what is? The removal of the level caps for the CoP areas. Trying to get a group together to do CoP missions was pretty much the most broken thing about playing FFXI recently. I don't know how many of you have tried shouting for groups to do things like the Promys recently, but let me tell you, it was broken as all hell. Even with the server merges, I'm glad they are finally doing that. Level capped missions are just such a bitchy thing to do in an MMO, where population can't be guaranteed. I mean, really, who wants to do CoP again? Once I finally got Holla, Mea, and Dem done I had no desire to ever do that crap ever again lol
I think it'll be fun low manning Dynamis and soloing HNMs. Sure, there will be the whiners and complainers bitching about all the hard work that went into getting their gear, and how their uberleetsauce <whatever> isn't so uberleetsauce anymore and their epeen is shrinking, but to them, I say: Welcome to MMO's. What's considered the best equipment today will likely never be the best tomorrow. Even without major changes like these the community itself is ever changing in terms of what gear is leet and what gear is gimp. So for the people Q.Q'ing about their relic and how it could potentially be gimped down the road, get over it. Stop acting like you never got your "OMFG LOOK AT MY SHINIES!!!" time because you know you did.
As for the people complaining about how hard it is to level in FFXI, either they haven't played in the last couple years or they need to get out of the mouthbreather "LOLCOLIBRI" mindset that has pervaded the player base over the last few years. I freaking leveled DNC from 60 to 75 almost exclusively in Campaign, sure, it took a month or so, but really, what's better, sitting in Whitegate with your flag up picking your ass? I've never understood those people. Then, of course, there's Fields of Valor, which gives you pretty good experience even killing just Easy Prey and Decent Challenge mobs, and also gives you tabs to purchase Regen/Refresh/Reraise/Protect/Shell with. Duoing DRG/WHM recently, we were able to level from 1-30 in like 3 days. We've gotten BST from 1-54 in about 3 weeks of duoing. I understand that not all jobs can solo or duo effectively, but seriously, subbing WHM or DNC pretty much anyone can get decent exp while they're LFG if they just try a little harder, and of course, use exp bands. ^^
Anywho, I've rambled long enough, but really, anyone that is just so eaten up about the recent changes, well, show your displeasure with your wallet and quit the freaking game. It's okay, it really is. FFXI is on it's way out anyways, and I know a lot of jaded endgamers are just kinda biding their time until FFXIV comes out anyways. Is there a law or something that says you need to be playing an MMO? Just stop playing if it bothers you that much...
Oh, and by the way, hi to my (soon to be) new friends on Sylph!

To be fair I don't know what people keep saying about not getting a party ... just don't level a job like DRG, PUP or DRK and you'll be fine, I'm leveling COR atm, and I get invites without even being LFG all the time.
Just get a friend to lvl with you that's a COR or a BRD, with the level sync it's pretty easy to get a group together. Or just make your own parties, even faster that way!
Seriously, with level sync, it's easy as hell to get pt invites. With people STILL saying that it's hard to get a pt need to either get their head out of their a**, or simply haven't played the game in the past 3 years.
That's not even necessary honestly. Every single job can do Campaign, and while it's not the fastest exp/hour, from 60 on it's pretty simple. I see DRG's and DRK's pwning in Campaign all the freaking time.
Too many people are unrealistic as far as leveling goes, anyway. NIN's will complain that they can't get a group, but then will turn down every invite to a level sync party below 37 because they don't feel like partying without Utsusemi: Ni. RDM's will turn down invites below 40 because they don't have Convert. It's like people cry about not getting invites but then refuse half the invites they do get. You know how many PLD's I've had refuse my invite because we didn't have a RDM or BRD? Really, for a level 55 Colibiri party, PLD can't tank without refresh? I've partied with PLD's that could no problem, what, were they just that much better then everyone else?
Honestly, I blame the old school players for that, even though I am one myself. People are just so freaking lazy. If a party makes less then 10k an hour everyone starts whining. People are like "If I'm making less then 8k per hour it's a waste of my time"...that's cool, well have fun making 0 exp per hour in WG with your flag up tardbait...
It's like the people that are just stuck on a certain camp, and if that camp is taken then they are like "oh well, no party tonight" LOL WUT? I've had so much fun partying in non-traditional camps because it's not only a change of scenery but since there's no one else there, you have the whole camp to yourself. I've actually had people give up because the Colibri camp at the Leypoint in Wajaom was taken.
All in all, people just need to learn how to think outside of the damn box a little LOL. Just because everyone says a certain thing HAS to be a certain way doesn't mean you can't try new things. Look at the way things "Had to be" before Treasures of Aht Urhgan came out. Radically different then the way things are today...
Ugh, although I find the level cap raise nice, Its kinda unnecessary or, rather stupid. Especially because Square Enix themselves once said that they would never raise the lvl cap.
However, I guess this will screw up more than it actually should... Thinking about all the HNMs, gods, Dynamis and so on. Will you then be able to solo all of these things, or are they just gonna raise the lvls of these bosses? And what about the subjob classes, I mean, like someone stated before, with a lvl 49 subjob you can do incredible awesome job combos with nice abilities. People will be able to solo their way up to the cap even more. Also, all the equipment will be worthless that once was nice. Not like I would care as long as they made new ones.
Anyways, for me this is just some easy way for SE to make money, i mean, come on, 3 new Expansions, means 3 times additional payment? I guess they ran out of money for FFXIV huh... But whatever helps them develop that game, as long as they release it in time im happy.
Well, since this is obviously directed at me, I'll answer. I haven't played the game since 2004. So yes, I think that qualifies as 3 years =P.
I don't know anything about the new content they added or the level sync feature. In hind-sight,, I probably shouldn't have said anything at all, but it's too late for that. My impression of the game 6 years ago was obviously a completely different game, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth that I can't get rid of, which is why I will never re-sub to it.
Anyway, I apologize, but I'm not attacking *your"* game in any way, shape, or form. I loved FFXI. I played it for over a year.

I wouldn't worry about him. He just have left over anger for the level sync as some FFXI veterans do, except probably not nearly as angry.
Truthfully level sync did made it easier, but of course some veteran think it also kind of dumbed down the game a bit. Everyone reacted differently, don't worry about it especially since you stopped before level sync came to being anyways.
FFXI is kind of annoying in a way that it really doesn't get too fun till that level 65 barrier when you feel like you start to have full command of your abilities. Thus, some masochistic tendency is required to even level up before level sync was applied. LOL
Of course we end up with more high levels who are still lost about what to do in party due to the level sync system. Doubled edged sword that system can be.

Reminds me how DPS meters ruined WoW imo. Everyone obsesed about numbers, numbers numbers...ahh if i wanted to worry about numbers so much I would go take some math classes >.0.Hell what happened to just playing a game and ejoying it. honestly i think thats why a lot of people dont like some mmos out there, because they DONT have DPS/heal meters they DONT have 20 addons u NEED to raid or group.
And WoW from what I have read is making things even lazyER with the removal of stats and Simplifying them. Cataclysm just sounds like.."hey lets make this game even easyer to be ubber with out much hard work".
Dont get me wrong I like casual/semi-causual, and more difficult games as well. But I dont want everything spoon feed to me either. It feels more satisfying and gratifying to earn/achieve things. I as well look forward to FF 14, it will bring a welcome challange and swing to the MMo of things.
Yes they said they would never raise the cap because it allowed some abilities to be reached tha twould offset the balance of the game.Square has changed the direction of the company a lot over the last few years, probably a combination of money greed and from working with other developers they gain some bad ideas.Square is now working with cash shop developers,so don't be surprised to see them down that road before too long.
All the recent expansions are really nothing more than new maps, does that warrant paying for 3 xpacs now 3 more? All they did this time was add in the AF3 and level cap, really that takes no effort to implement, unless they made whole sale changes to offset the levels, witch they are not.
IMO developers everywhere should ALWAYS implement at least 1-2 new class into each xpac, this creates a new wave of players into the noob zones again, this creates a good atmosphere for new players that want to get into the game.Since Square made the expansion that rehashed old maps now 6 straight cheap xpacs, they have not put any effort into their development.Something tells me Square must have set time limits on development, they decided Campaign would take a bit of effort/time,so they rehashed old maps to offset the time.Of course the last 3+the new 3 packs will have no new classes, these are all imo incomplete expansion packs, especially since asked to pay for them,it is not free updates.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It amazes me how many ppl don't read everything and are blaming that the game is gonna be broken now and your epic gear from Dynamis or wherever else will be gimp and useless now...it won't because of the new Trial of the Magians ~ Weapon and Armor Quest Enhancement System designed with enhancing that high-end gear specifically so its still quite useful all the way to 99!
Trial of the Magians
“Trial of the Magians” is the title given to a new quest series designed especially for level 75 characters.
Quest Structure
The quests will be divided into a number of categories, and progression in each will allow players to earn different rewards. The following quest branches and more are being considered:
- Weapon enhancement.
- Armor enhancement.
Trial of the Magians will be introduced to the game in multiple stages, with the initial set of weapon enhancement quests slated for addition in the March version update.
Enhancing a Weapon
A Trial of the Magians weapon enhancement quest can be initiated by first trading a suitable weapon to a Magian Moogle NPC, at which point a list of corresponding quests will be displayed. Players may choose a quest based on difficulty level and the enhancement they would like added to their weapon, which will be granted upon the fulfillment of the quest objective.
A single weapon can undergo numerous upgrades. By trading an already-enhanced weapon to a Magian Moogle, players can undertake successive quests to have it further improved. Multiple quests can be undertaken simultaneously.
By repeating the quests, up to 80 different features can be added to a single weapon. With figures such as Damage and Delay added to the equation, there exist 500 possible attribute patterns for a single quest branch!
There are also plans to make it possible to enhance Relic and Mythic weapons through Trial of the Magians. While players can expect quest difficulty to far exceed similar quests released thus far, we are confident the rewards will make it more than worth the while!
Read the dern website completely before you break down in tears thinking that its all gonna suddenly break and be useless. Square-Enix above all other MMO devs are the only ones that time and again; successfully recycle and keep every damned feature ever built into FFXI useful, and never goes obsolete.

What exactly is this "Level sync" system? Is it like EQII's level system where a player can "Level down" so they can group with new players while still advancing their character? Say for instance, I have a level 70 Paladin. Could I "Level down", join a group of 30's and level my job to 75 that way? If so, I can see how this is a big problem for veterans, but also a good thing for new players.

Yes, it is exactly as it sounds. The party leader "syncs" the groups "level" of the target player. The only problem it causes is the lack of skilling up in said sync parties as your skills are now capped to the level of the party if your current skill exceeds the sync level. Easily remedied though through besieges and standard skill up parties.
Honestly, they could go either way, but I'm betting they'll leave them alone. This all seems to be a way for FFXI to improve accessibility to things that a lot of players just never had the ability to do, and I'm actually really glad. My friends and I have always joked that, when S-E decides to finally kill FFXI, they should just give everybody GM powers, turn on PvP, and let us all run around and gat the hell out of each other, let alone all the various mobs out there. Obviously, it would pretty much kill the game, but if they're gonna kill it anyways, why not have some fun with it? And you know it would be fun as hell...I've played on private servers and it really is a blast.
Anyways, I'm getting off topic, but my point is that if the sky gods are soloable, who cares? The gear that they drop will, I'm assuming, be kinda crap compared to the new stuff you can get. And besides, the game is freaking stagnating the way things are. Even raising the level cap to 80 would add in an entirely new dimension to party setup, going all the way to 99 and all sorts of job combinations that were horribly broken may become viable. If anything, it'll shake up the status quo a bit, and FFXI needs it.
Us FFXI players are a stodgy bunch, really. Job A can only have Subjobs B, C, or D and that's it. At level 55 you can only camp in this one particular camp on this one particular mob. Your Sam needs to have merits in this, this and this. If you don't have X piece of gear then you fail at whatever job you're playing. And so on, and so on...
If anything, this will give us a good solid few months of "Holy crap I don't know what's going on", something that we really haven't had since ToAU and WotG was released. C'mon, you guys remember how fun it was zoning in Wajaom Woodlands and not knowing what the hell any of the mobs were and how angry they were, corpses all over the place ^^
So very true. I've questioned things before, and in the end, SE has always come thru. The game is awesome and I'm excited about these updates opening up whole new realms of possibilities yet again.
This isn't directed specifically at you, but to many people who have said similar comments about the game without referencing the FFXI that currently exists. I understand that FFXI may have left a bad taste in people's mouths way back when because of the lack of means to level -- and that's completely fine, being as it is their opinion -- but it really ticks me off when people assume it is the exact same game after all those years and still hold the same faults toward the game without acknowledging its improvements. The reason I was upset, is because when comments such as "It's still (present tense) impossible to find a party in the game" are made, it gives the it a bad name, one that assumes it is the same game which hasn't changed.
I appreciate you acknowledging, albeit in a different post yet nonetheless, that you were not aware of the newer content in FFXI that makes it more accessible and consequently changes the game quite drastically. It definitely is a different game now, and I just wish that people would give it another chance without immediately bringing up its past faults.
