Well, it was built over a span of 2 years, so I didn't lay down all this at once.
    Built by me that is.

    $150......AMD 64 3000+ (2.4)
    $70........Gigabyte GA-8something (nForce 3 250)
    $180.......eVGA FX5700 ultra (580/1.04)
    $200.......1024mb (1gb) Centon DDR400 (2.5-3-3-4-8)
$60.........Samsung DVD dual layer DVD burner (don't remember the speeds off hand)
    $100.......Western Digital SATA Cavair 200gb (7200.7/8mb)
    $130.......Seagate EIDE Barracude 200gb (7200.7/8mb)
    $140.......Western Digital EIDE Cavair 120gb (7200.7/8mb)
    $25.........Chaintech AV-710 (7.1/24bit/96khz) [2 channel hi-res mode]
$45.........Some Coolermaster case with 400 watt PSU
    $130.......Alessandro MS-1 w/ Flats (Awesome open headphones)
    $120.......Audio Technica ATH-A500s
    $300.......Kenwood HTB-206 (5.1/600 watt peak)
    $100.......Gateway 19" CRT
    $400.......Gateway 19" LCD
    $40.........Logitech Trackman (best mouse. Ever)
    $20.........Gateway multimedia keyboard
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    $2212.....40,800 Aquamark 3 score

I am looking to upgrade my video card, but all the 6800s are fucking PCI-E.
Also, if you didn't guess by reading that I started with a gateway computer (one of them is 9 years old, and the newer one is 4 years old) currently nothing is left from the original one aside from the 120gb HDD.

You really should have a $/year comparaison.

I usually spend a little under 2k myself, every 2 or 3 years, for a brand new computer.  Add maybe a few upgrades like a video card or ram in the middle.

My current computer was buyed at Doom3 release whatever that is, Pentium 3.0 thingy with 1 meg or RAM and 5900 whatever the remaining for the video card hehehe.

I plan buying a new video card if needed either late 2005 or early 2006, next computer will be 2007.

EDIT: My old computer is an AMD 1.2(buyed in summer 2002), I keep it as back up or to play old games, no point in installing Black Isles products and risk a conflict with the new gear, however I will prolly move the video card from current to old if I upgrade it on current.  Always fun to be able to play EQ, DAoC or any old game on my old computer should I want to.  I usually build my computer for the most requiring game I wanna play in the near future.  Current computer was build to be able to run EQ2, althought I move to others games and didnt like EQ2 that much, it was running CoH so smoothly I was in heaven.  Last computer was built for the Throne of Bhaal expension of Black Isle if I recall well, but my memory is getting messy.

PS: My pentium never crash once, my AMD crash an average once per 30 hours of play.  Of course, some games can crash, but let say my AMD was crashing more then any game, while my pentium never crash.  I am clueless with computer, but a computer that dont crash certainly have me more happy then a computer that does crash.

Build the system yourself, or if you don't know how, then get a friend who knows how to do it for you. You can easily get a killer system for $1,000 or less if you build it yourself, and just look around and research.
