So sometime in the next 9 months. Someone here said October and for the same reasons listed I'd have to agree. They're already signing up Beta participants (check the main page, can't miss it).
I'm pretty sure an interview somewhere said the game was like 90% feature complete. All they really need to work on is content. So the 2010 releases are definately realistic. The Alpha test phase starting next week will have 10% content available, but I expect they alsready have most of it done. They're just doing focus testing.
IMO they had the game near done way back in December because Tanaka said way back in SEP/October ,if everything went perfect ,it could be possible for a Dec or Jan Beta.
If you read all the problems they had porting the single player FFXIII witch is basically going to be the exact same quality as FFXIV,then you begin to know why they are not getting the Beta out. They were struggling to get 30 fps on the PS3 and the Xbox was lowered to only 576 so,this is most likely what we are waiting for.If they are struggling to get frame rates on a single player game, imagine how it is going to play in a MMO setting.
We might end up needing one heck of a PC to play FFXIV., not sure what the bandwidth equivalent is to the PS3 for a PC.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

True, I imagine that's why all the beta announcements are only concerning the PC version at the moment as well. Hopefully the PS3 launch won't have any teething problems...

They are always way too cautious when giving out their release dates. After a thorough debate in another thread, we have come to the assumption that beta will come out sometime in September, 2010, for financial reasons and also because the developers stated the closed beta will last six months. March 11th is the start of Closed Beta, and they've sent out their first string of invites for beta applicants.

Actually March 11th is Alpha, they've never referred to it as Beta. The people who were accepted in this wave were only long time FFXI subscribers who'd applied for the Beta. The actual Beta doesn't start for a while yet.
Whether or not they'll stick to their 6 month plan for Beta remains to be seen though. I'm pretty sure they'll want to make the 2010 release if they can.

On their website ( http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/ ), under their "About" section it states: Release Date: 2010
