Going to buy LOTRO+expansions in the next week - Class help?

So, I'm going to get into LOTRO in the next week or two. I've been reading up on the classes, and having a hard time choosing what I want to be.

Guardians, Captains and Burglars look like a lot of fun.

Champions and Hunters seem too populated of a class, and I prefer stealth or survivability...and I don't like bows/crossbows/guns or anything ranged (except magic). And I don't really like kiting, which ranged classes do a lot.

Minstrels are healing, and I'm good at that. But I solo a lot as well, and never liked pure healing classes...like priests or clerics. I like having it as an option, like a druid or paladin.

Rune-keepers look fun, but I would rather play as a melee class for a main...I'll probably play one as an alt

Don't know much about Lore-masters, but I don't really like pet classes or classes that rely on pets or have pets as combat. Vanity pets that just follow you around and don't get in the way or do anything are fine though. Which it looks like Captains kind of rely on pets, which is probably a negative. I haven't played an MMO that doesn't have really annoying pets, that follow you off cliffs/steep slopes (mostly they go all the way around the cliff and aggro 10000 mobs...)...or/and have bad pathing issues. Or countless other annoying issues.

Which then probably leads to Guardian or Burglar. There is Warden, but I heard that class is really hard to play/learn, so I may skip that till I'm better at LOTRO...so Warden will probably end up as an alt like my future Rune-keeper.

So, I like survivability with melee...but if thats not an option, stealth is a lot of fun too. I solo A LOT, mostly because at times, I may go afk for a few minutes at a time every 10 minutes or so...not always, but a lot of stuff goes on in real life and I get busy a lot. And I don't like being the one to leave in middle of a group. That isn't to say I never group, I do group a good amount...but not always. And, I'm not big into PvP, so I'm not worried about that.

Other classes I've played in MMOs that I liked a lot:

WoW: Shaman (favorite class in WoW), Paladin, Warrior,  Mage (didnt like WoW's rogue, the energy thing was really annoying. I could never figure it out like I could mana or rage. If it wasnt for that, I would have loved it.)

Age of Conan: Assassin (TONS of fun, most fun I've had in a class), Bear Shaman, Herald of Xotli

Vanguard Saga of Heroes: Dread Knight (favorite tank class I've played in a game), Bard (lots of fun), Druid, Shaman

Guild Wars: Elementalist, Warrior, Assassin

hope this helps in seeing what class I might like. And even the classes I've "marked" off my list, aren't truly marked off. Who knows, I might like say Captain or something and be surprised, even though it has pets.

Thanks :)

and yup, first post on the forums :)

Think of captain's pets as mobile buffs instead of pets. You will be all up in the baddies face giving them a good old melee beat down with lots of utility on your side.

Judging by your tastes I'd say you'd probably enjoy the captain.

They have a pet, yes, but later on they get the option to use a placeable banner instead (similar to a shaman totem) to provide buffs to the group. They mostly operate as an all-around support class though, their DPS is arguably the lowest in the game at the moment. I'd say they kinda fit a loose paladin-esque role if I had to compare to other MMOs but they differ in a lot of ways as well. They're not primarily tanks, for example.

Since you like stealth though I'd say roll a Burglar too and just see what you think.

From what you wrote. I would say go minstrel. Althought they are not the toughtest by far. I can solo a lot on my mini. They also have the option to reduce their healing output in exchange for enhancing their combat.

I played the same classes you did in the games you listed. I'd advice a burglar. I've tried every class in Lotro and that's the one that clicked the best with me. Ultimately it's a small list, try them all a bit. See which one you end up playing more. Besides, with three or four picks you can see more starter areas, then decide.

    I would agree.

You can trait to do more damage and even without minstrels seem to do well.

Also OP, pvp is an option in LOTRO so it won't really be an issue for you.

i`ve been playing since day 1, i can, without doubt, reccommend : Burglar.... a little slow on levelling, but with the right set-up.. you`ll have your target below 50% health or more, even before he hits you... best class ever, and i`ve played them all.. so much fun in a variety of ways.

enjoy the game, its currently the best there is... by a long shot ... and that goes for the community too.

My 2 Favorite Classes are Hunter and Rune Keeper...I have a Level Capped Captain as well that is pretty cool...But Hunter completely rocks and Rune Keeper is a ton of fun too...

Well, I ended up making a Captain. They seem versatile (except low DPS, but that doesn't bother me) and I see they get abilities that heal. I heard they were sorta similar to Shamans in WoW (I know not the same, but like an earlier reply said, they get banners that are kind of like totems for Shamans. I like that). And they get a bunch of cool buffs and stuff it looks like.

I'll try a Burglar too after my Captain.

Thanks for the help everyone :) He is still in Archet  (before it gets burned), so I have lots to see and do :)
