Bioware & Obsidian

Gabby-airGabby-air Member UncommonPosts: 3,440

So up until today i thought obsidian was just a daughter company of bioware but it doesn't seem so. I've tried doing some research on this but google keeps giving bad links so my question is, what exactly is the relationship between the two companies? I'm also surprised to see that the new fallout is to be made by these guys instead of bethesda.

Obsidian Entertainment formed after the disestablishment of Black Isle Studios, the ORIGINAL DEVELOPERS of the Fallout games. So it's not really all that strange to see them developing New Vegas.

Obsidian Entertainment developed KOTOR2 and NWN2.

Under Black Isle Studios, they developed:

    Fallout (1997)

    Fallout 2 (1998)

    Planescape: Torment (1999)

    Icewind Dale (2000)

Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter (2001)

Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter - Trials of the Luremaster (2001)

    Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (2001)

    Icewind Dale II (2002)

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (2004)

Hope that gives you some perspective on Obsidian Entertainment.

I see, but the main thing that has me confused is why obsidian has developed some bioware games like NWN and kotor 2?

That's easy.  Bioware does not own the rights to those properties.  IIRC Atari has the publishing rights to the NWN games, and they more or less say who makes them.  Bioware made the first one, then Obsidian was contracted to do the sequels.  Not sure on the details with KOTOR 2, but I'm sure its the same situation.   Which is one of the major reasons I get pissed when people blame Bioware for not liking NWN 2 or KOTOR 2.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Bioware wasn't happy with the production schedule demanded for kotor2 and so it got switched over from them,
