Star Trek "The search for a quck buck!!"

RexGarvinRexGarvin Member Posts: 28

I played Star Trek from beta thru the official opening of the game.  The game is just plain boring!! This game is not an mmo.  It is a video game that you play online.  Atari only wants to make as many bucks as it can as fast as it can off the StarTrek name.  Most of the open beta players had to buy the game. Believe me if Atari had a normal free to play open beta they would have not gotten anyone to buy this game!! I pity the fools who bought the lifetime subscription!  They also used false advertising about the ship bridge game play.   The only thing you can do on an instance of a bridge is stand around and look like a fool for buying the game.

ummmm ..... They did.  I got my key from FilePlanet? if I remember right.  They handed out 5000 alone on the site I went to and I know there were like 3 other sites also giving away keys.

Got a key, DL, played and decided not to buy.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

More and more companies are using the "Pay to play open beta". Doesn't mean you had to buy it, you could have just waited like thousands of other people to hear how game-play was.

That comment threw me as well. You didn't have to pay anything to get into Beta. I got my key from this very site but chose to wait until release since I didn't want to have the storyline spoiled for me.

False advertisement really? when was the last time you saw an honest ad  for a MMO or any other product? is it me or STO community is full of such awesome people like OP? they say the darnest things i ever read on any MMO forums.

Also don't blame your inability to differentiate between CGI and actual gameplay on the company.  The only fault of company was that it ASSUMED that trekkies would be smart enough to know the difference. Guess they were wrong.

If the game is boring for you quit!  I find the game a breath of fresh air in a jungle of fantasy MMO's.  Since I do a lot of grouping in STO, I must disagree that its not a MMO.  How dare Atari want to make money! I'm sure the rest of the MMO game distributors never had profit as a motive!  If you bought into the Open Beta the cost was just $5.00, you did not have to buy the full retail game.  I bought the lifetime sub and keep your pity as I enjoy playing the game.  If you played the Beta or read anything on the forums you would know that the bridges were a throw in bonus added at the last minute to fulfill fans requests.  They also said they would look at adding functionability at a later date.

Relax OP, no need to cry foul. XFire shows a 50% drop in played hours after 1 month which was marginally better than Champions Online (which had close to 60% drop).

So in 6 months this game will join Champions Online with a few thousand subs and the game will be forgotten. Hopefully that will be a detterent for other companies that are thinking about creating superinstanced, shallow "MMOGS".

Unfortunately it won't be as there is plenty of money to be made on box sales alone and other companies will see that.

Fact of the matter is...they had a free beta. I didn't order my copy until I played the free beta. I think it was for about 3-4 weeks before launch. Just being fair because, on the other hand, I am kinda pissed off on how they handled their marketing mere weeks after launch. I could deal with the changes to skill raising they made just before launch but the events of the last few weeks caused me to cancel my sub. I may pick it up again if they demonstrate some sound decision making in the future.

But any company with an intelligent business model will know that long term subscribers is where the real money is at.

I think this game is the most shining example of a Rushed MMORPG of all time. I'm NOT saying that some people don't find it to be fun, or that some find it to be a "breath of fresh fantasyless air".

Its just a shame, the IP deserves better. But never gets treated well in video games, ever.

Unfortunately with Cryptic lately, I'll have to pull a George W. Bush:

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — hmm...  you can't get fooled again."

And I even let them fool me twice, Champions Online and STO (although to be honest, I only got the CO 6 month subscription to get into STO beta. I'm not regretting that decision, STO in closed beta was actually a MUCH more fun game than what it is today)

After champions i promised myself to never buy a game from them again.

i did played beta but that was awful.

they never release a finished product.

I never rush to the end buut if you make different characters the game should be a litlle different but sadly its just the same.

I wanted a star trek world with alot of different careers, stupid me.

Agreed, but given the way a good majority of releases have gone as of late, I would say the quick box sale cash grab is where it's at for developers and the subsequent long term subs are simply a bonus.
