Theres nothing particularly wrong with them, per se. In my rather limited experience with my priest (only level 14), I find I have a bit harder of a time soloing than do other classes of the same level. I think that overall, many players choose the shadow route early on (because the talents make soloing much more viable), then respec to Holy once they get up in the 55-60 range and start doing more instances. That's what I hear, anyway =)

As for me, I'm going Holy/Disc all the way through--I'll tough it out (it's really not that bad) image

If you compare shadow and holy talents you'll see why holy priests seem to be crappy.

Mind Flay vs Holy Fire - best channeled single-target spell vs completely crappy and gimped Pyroblast.

Silence/Vampiric Embrace vs Spirit of Redemption - two very good spells vs party heal when priest dies...

Shadowform vs Holy Nova - dmg increase and better dmg absorbtion vs weak AoE for a class not meant to do any AoE(only druids' Hurricane is worse which has the same problem).

So shadow priest gets very nice tools while holy priest only gets healing improvements from other boring holy talents.

the type of priest you play is totally up to your playstyle. i have a friend who is a holy priest (lvl 50 now) and has been the whole time. That being said he does have some shadow skills and it helps, you don't have to go one way. mix it up a little. find what you like and go for it. if you do a talent build and don't like it then you can always pay your 1g and redo the whole deal.

A better questions would be "Why play a holy priest when you can play a shadow priest?"

As a holy priest you will be able to solo...VERY painfully and slowly. This is a very solo-oriented game, people don't group up in large groups except for big quests. They don't exp as a group, which is...where your Exp will be coming from.

As a shadow priest you'll be able to heal 90% as well as a Holy priest, but be able to solo 300% better and can play mage when there's too many priests in the party. There is no good reason to go Holy or Disc over Shadow until level 58+ when ALL your time will be spent raiding in huge groups.

If you were to go holy/disc, your soloing will be hell. Shadow is made for soloing IMO since I have a 54 ud priest on Tichondrius, and I've gotten to 54 with shadow in a matter of 3.5 weeks. If you don't know many people, and don't have someone to constantly group with go with Shadow.

Im playing a holy priest right now. I am 46 (gathered half the exp I need for 47 this morning} and have played most of that way either alone, or with one other person.

I have absolutely no problems taking on mobs a couple of levels higher than I am. Does this mean I can tank? Nope. Don't want to. Priest's (even shadow) are not meant to be damage dealers. We are support...plain and simple.

Shadow priests do have less downtime, but also less healing ability. If you do a holy/disc priest right, you can heal, and take a bit of pounding as well.

Some of the spells that are being knocked are actuall quite good. Spirit of redemption has saved my group a number of times. Holy fire, mind blast, SW: P, smite....that is usually half {or more} of the HP of a mob at my level. Since you lead with Holy fire, you dont have to worry about hate.

Priests are more about play style than anything else. If you want to be able to sit and take damage, don't play a priest. If you want to deal out huge amounts of damage, don't play a priest. If you want to help your friends, and ALWAYS have a place in a group....play a priest.

Ahh, i just hate the mindset of "you are priest, you must be healbot and don't do any damage". Really, WoW priest isn't some sort of boring EQ cleric or DAOC buffbot. Of course when in group you do the healing since as a priest you are best at it. In WoW priest ARE meant to do decent damage, but of course any priest nuking in instances and gaining tons of aggro should be kicked at once.

Holy priest are more oriented for party play while if you spec shadow you'll be better at duels. So far both specs can do well both in solo and groups, holy/shadow just shifts focus on these gameplay aspects.
