Are body parts in gaming art becoming more disproportionate?

VypreVypre Member Posts: 180

This isnt meant to be rude, but I find it a bit funny. I always find myself gazing at the lovely female artwork of game title when they smak me in the face from a home page or advertising banner.

But I was just surfing for gaming news and came across the DC Universe Facebook page www.facebook.com/DCUniverseOnline to read up on the DCUO Mass Animation Contest.

So I go there, and this is what greets me.

At first I laughed, but do ya think the heads are getting smaller and the chests are getting bigger? I dont know. . .just doesnt seem very necessary for a gaming product? :)

small head big chest...i dont see what's wrong.

Lol, yes its done but usually it's not that disproportinate but for some reason korean devs like to do this a lot guess it's more of a culture thing. In general though i think this is here to stay as long as men are the majority gamers.

Intentionally making things stylized results in generally more favorable customer response. (See also uncanny valley.)

Making a caricature of your game usually results in people laughing at it. (See caricature.)

Stylized, and pathetic are 2 different things. You really don't want the other unless your banner is not meant  to be totally serious.I am not saying they can't joke in ads, they even should, but it just makes them look stupid when done unintentionally.

Just take a look at all the adds here at MMORPG.com! Always some female with boobs big as Bryssel, just to make more teenages boys click it.  LOL.

  • arcdevilarcdevil Member Posts: 864

well, in all honesty it looks exactly like any DC female character, or any comic character for the matter. you never get enough boobies.

welcome to a market that targets easily excitable teens (and this applies to both comics and games).

Looks exactly how I remember Power Girl from the comics except for the hairstyle, so 9/10 for lore.

In DC/Marvel every superheroine packs a large pair, every superhero looks like he never leaves the gym. In earlier days superheroes who had no physcial powers like say Cyclops looked pretty average muscle wise and superheroines did not wear skin tight coustumes. Now even if your only power is lazer beams from your eyes you look like Arnie and no girl leaves home without her catsuit. :)

A lot of people on these forums hate WoW.

Many point at the style of the artwork as a reason.

Most females in WoW are hyper feminine except for maybe the orc girls

Yeah... Power Girl (that character) is supposed to have freakishly huge boobs. They take jabs at that aspect of the character in the comics on and off. They make fun of it too.

That could arguably be one of the better proportioned images of her oddly enough.

Um, well, it's Power Girl. That's not a good example to say something about MMORPG body proportions. Power Girl's figure has *always* been ridiculous; it's been a standing in-joke for many, many years.

I loves me some Power Girl.

    Advertising at it's best.

I personally think a player should be able to choose how sexy their character looks, both at the initial creation stage (for their physical body proportions) and with an armor/clohthing option. You could chose (a) revealing attire, (b) standard or (c) conservative. Each armor piece would display differently depending on the choice made. So if a player doesn't want to look like Wonder Woman, they don't have to.

So far as sexy NPCs, I'm ok with that.

I think using Power Girl, or any other female (or male for that matter) super-hero, for this particular subject is pointless. They are supposed to be disproportionate. They are comic book super-heroes.

its meant to be like that, superheroes are exagerated proportions because it makes them seem more powerful =)

Power girl has always been portrayed as this. It has nothing to do with the game, but the comics.

And Power Girl is supposed to be disproportionate even by comic book standards. <Checks picture again> Yep, they even included the infamous "boob window" leotard, which is taken from the comic, not something they did.

As long as there has been visual forms of entertainment people have gone with big boobs/hourglass figures etc (and in modern times bigger booties).

It's no different for movies, tv, music etc. so no MMOs aren't any different.

When you are out to be entertained, oddly enough you like things that entertain you, sex sells and always has, always will. For some reason people always think it's a modern phenomenon but it's been going on for ever.

Not much of a comics fan to be honest, but this isn't just a comic thing or even a gaming thing. Just look at your "traditional" fantasy art that so influenced the 'look' of D&D, and thus fantasy gaming in general. Much as I may occasionally complain that my sweet, demure and rather shy priestess has suddenly developed a taste for traipsing around in her underwear because her latest gear with better stats is - frankly - a g-string, it has to be said that this is being somewhat faithful to the High Fantasy image.

For what it's worth, I much preferred the system in LotR where you could keep your current item's model and 'upgrade' the stats, but as that doesn't seem to have caught on...

Not really we have been making stuff like this since we painted caves. Sex sells and we will always buy and ask for more.

Whats wrong with these proportions.  A couple of ex girlfriends were built like that.... (not as blonde, though!)  Oh I see.  This isnt about her boob cup size.  Her actual chest is quite large, in the back.  She looks kinda buff..

    My bad ;-)

She's cute and better proportioned I think.
