Back for the weekend

yayitsandyyayitsandy Member Posts: 363

Its always nice to set foot in Paragon City every now and then even if its when they offer a free weekend pass . I did notice this time the area around Liberty PLaza seamed to have a lot less activity than on previous visits though . If makes me wonder how much subscriptions have fallen by . Although I still have fondness for this game I would never return at the price of a current monthly sub fee . It just looks too outdated nowdays to be worth it . I think it would be a good idea if it was reduced given the age of the game .

I also came back for the free weekend.  I'm having an ok time but am in the same boat as you.  Having played the game off and on for 4+ years(stopped sub last summer), it just does not offer me enough anymore to pay the monthly sub.  There is not really anything different to do that I could not do a few months back(or a couple years back for that matter).  I will check out the game again after Going Rogue is released.

That's just what I was going to suggest, check it out after Going Rogue. Updated graphics, a focus on 50+ content, and whole new areas.

One reason there might be less activity in Atlas Park is because focus is shifted. This weekend "double xp" is combined with "welcome back", which they used to do separately. That means most players are spending more time running stuff than hanging around in Atlas being morons. (The default activity for Atlas Park.)

Also the Architect missions have been de-emphasized over the last issue or two, plus don't benefit from doubling. That's why people used to hang around in Atlas, for easy access to AE. They don't do that anymore.

But I have to agree, overall things have been quieter lately. I blame bad focus on the Architect system. The last FOUR issues have all be focused on that - creating, adding features, nerfing it, rebalancing different parts, etc. For those who don't really care about about the Mad Libs + dress-up approach to mission variety, there hasn't been much to see in the last 18 months.

Its been a while for me, so I reinstalled to take another look.

I jumped in eagerly and took a mission, was teleported into an Underground Lair full of casually unintelligent carbon-copy NPC's, did my thing and exited.

I jumped in another mission thinking there wasn't anything exciting about that, then swept sewer full of unintelligent carbon-copy NPC's and left the mission.

    I proceeded to uninstall.

Nice that they added architect, and day jobs, but the variety of mission locations and NPC's as well as boss' and ai seems stale still.  I guess the lack of fun flying around a non-interactive city just leaves me disinterested too.

Striving for Silver Stars since Gold is so effeminate.

Yea, I'm rather expecting to get some new mission tilesets with GR myself and honestly hoping for more to come out with more regularity in issues.  They've added some, but they're generally mission specific or only used for a couple missions, which seems a slight waste when you think about it.

They're apparently releasing 20 new maps for the mission architect with I17, but it's somewhat unclear if it's completely new maps, or if it's maps that are just new to the mission architect.  Personally I'm kind of thinking the prior as the latter doesn't really strike me as something you'd put on your bullet-point list of features for a major patch.

I'm kind of curious about your AI comment though.  I've played my share of MMOs over the years and honestly, outside of 'special' encounters, most basic NPC's AI is pretty on-par with what CoH offers.  CoH is notably largely missing terribly detailed special encounters (they've tried their hand at a couple recently) but aside from that ....

I'm very curious about that too (AI) because I like to think it could be better but haven't played enough games to know what the standard quality is.

AI is actually better than it was years ago, they added some logic to enemies so they know to avoid clustering. Some will stay at range while their buddies wail on you melee. If you try to get them to follow you around a corner, some will take a wide turn and some will cut it right at the corner. There are ways to beat this of course, but it's not that stupid.

Of course pathfinding still needs work, but that's probably true in every game because it's always non-trivial.

Anyway, how would you like to see the AI be better? What should enemies do that they don't?
