Looking for a new MMO for a hard to please player

ArshoonArshoon Member UncommonPosts: 71

Yes, another "Help me find an MMO right for me" thread. With so many out there, its helpful to have others who have played that can help one find what may be right for me. Here's what I believe would make me happy.

1 - Its free to play (or has a free trial), I've tried a lot of MMOs and am at the really flakey difficult-to-please stage.

2 - "Realistic" graphics. No cartoony over-the-top graphics like WoW and nothing crappy like Runescape or Fiesta

3 - Skill-based or lots and lots of classes to choose from (or even different ones). I don't want yet another game to force me down linear paths, or make me play overdone classes like fighters, paladins, mages and priests.

4 - Role-play friendly. I am an old school D&D player, I would like a game that can lend itself to good RP if the mood strikes me and the people are there.

5 - Sexy female characters and skimpy armor. Simply put, I like playing females for one reason: if I am going to watch someone's rear end running around questing all day I want it to look nice and not be covered much if at all.

6 - Not gear dependant. So many MMOs are showing most character progression by what gear you wear instead of what abilities and skills your character has. Take your stuff off and you are helpless. I want something where I can see my character grow, not the power of my wardrobe.

Finally, features that are not critical:

7 - Nudity of some kind, taking all my armor off and having some underwear left and people call you naked just seems 'wrong'.

8 - More non-combat quests.

9 - A rich, interactive crafting system.

I know this may be a lot to ask, but there has to be a game for me out there.

If you aren't actively part of the solution, you have no right to complain about anything.

Don't think there's a single f2p like that.  Drop the money on AoC.

Tried AoC for a trial. It was meh. I should list the games I have tried.

WoW, Asheron's Call, Allods, Fallen Earth, Eve, Everquest 2, Age of Conan, Requiem, City of Heroes, Ultima Online, Aion, Perfect World, Runes of Magic, Anarchy Online, Guild Wars, DDO, Entropia, Second Life, FFIX, Free Realms, SWG, LotR, Runescape, Ryzom, Shaiya, Wurm Online.

I think you're stuck like a lot of us, but the need for female buttock view and non-gear dependance narrows the chances for you.

    Good luck.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

Try Mortal Online, it has almost all the things you listed.

1 - Its free to play (or has a free trial), I've tried a lot of MMOs and am at the really flakey difficult-to-please stage.
Entropia Universe is free to play, though you have the option to pay which will greatly accellerate your character development and reduce your downtime.
2 - "Realistic" graphics. No cartoony over-the-top graphics like WoW and nothing crappy like Runescape or Fiesta
    How about Cryengine 2?
3 - Skill-based or lots and lots of classes to choose from (or even different ones). I don't want yet another game to force me down linear paths, or make me play overdone classes like fighters, paladins, mages and priests.
How about a skill based sandbox with no character levels?
4 - Role-play friendly. I am an old school D&D player, I would like a game that can lend itself to good RP if the mood strikes me and the people are there.
Im an old school AD&Der too.  In a world without seams, where the systems are involved to the point of indecipherability, and the atmosphere is scifi, it leaves alot of room for both role playing and modern colloquialisms.
5 - Sexy female characters and skimpy armor. Simply put, I like playing females for one reason: if I am going to watch someone's rear end running around questing all day I want it to look nice and not be covered much if at all.
How about playing in a bra and panties, with a whip and a cowboy hat?
6 - Not gear dependant. So many MMOs are showing most character progression by what gear you wear instead of what abilities and skills your character has. Take your stuff off and you are helpless. I want something where I can see my character grow, not the power of my wardrobe.
How about an approach that combines both?   At a certain point you probably should not be stronger than a Tyrannosaurus Rex, but you probably could be as strong as a Bull...
Finally, features that are not critical:
7 - Nudity of some kind, taking all my armor off and having some underwear left and people call you naked just seems 'wrong'.
    8 - More non-combat quests.
    9 - A rich, interactive crafting system.

Have you looked at Entropia Universe?  Ive been playing it for 3 months now and love it!

I tried Entropia twice, once before CryEngine was used. Its a terrible game, no fun at all. Nothing to do except farm and farm some more. No quests at all. Now, I enjoy a good sandbox, I played Wurm for a while, but when there's nothing but crafting and killing monsters, the game gets pretty boring.

I also didn't like the interface, the controls or the game period. Sounds good, but really, really dull. Have I missed something there?

At what stage did you attempt Anarchy Online?

    before shadowlands, after?

    After Alien invasion?

Just curious because thats the only game i played for 6 years... (Before all the shadowlands, alien invasion bull crap took over)...

If it ain't free, make it...

Even though it doesn't have everything you want, I was going to suggest DDO. However, since you've tried it I honestly can say I'm out of ideas.

Not many games have nudity. The only ones that I know of are Mortal Oneline and Conan.

so just like you i have been very frustrated about todays MMOS, tried them all, and cannot seems to keep a sub.  but one game i went back to and had to most fun with is Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.  Huge open world, ship, housing, developed classes, lots of intricate crafting, and diplomacy

    Darkfall

Skill based game, PvP, PvE, Questing, City Building, Large scale sieges (100s of players), Free content updates several times a year.

    It isn't F2P but there is a $1 trial.

Graphics are all in the eye of the beholder.  Environmental graphcis are the most amazing I have seen in  a game.  Character models are average at worst (better than WoW).  Videos on YouTube do not do the game graphics justice.

PvE is very good, much harder than other MMOs (you actually need to think).  No instances (never will be).  Hardest mobs take entire teams but they are not scripted encounters such as you see in most instanced games these days.  Next expansion (free) is expected to revise dungeon system (among other upgrades).  Expansion is due any time now.

PvP is the best I have seen since Asheron's call.  Less buggy and more functional.  No tab target non-sense.

No nudity though ;).  If you've seen the female dwarf models you would not want it.

Open, unrestricted pvp is something that can get me to stop playing faster than any bad game design. The type of player that open pvp attracts are the worst types players that I want nothing to do with. People who attack and kill you for the sake of attacking andd killing you. People who delight in making it their mission to ruining other players' fun.

So to Darkfall, no thank you.

^^ Read up one above yours. I already stated my opinions on that.

    Simply put, no f'in way.

    Ok.

But just for your info, there is less ganking in DF than there is in WoW, AoC or any "cool" pvp MMO.

What you don't realise is that is the "safe" PvP who attracts the morons, not the other way round.

This kind of people don't like when they lose all their stuff, therefore they do not play DF.

In fact if you read around, you will notice many new players are surprised how mature DF community is.

There's a new quest engine thats just started to be introduced. They seem to be rolling out new quests every month based on player feedback.

Im not sure how its going to take shape, but these things are going in.   The game does involve quite a bit of farming, skill building, etc, and although it can be quite social the roots of the game are in whatever farming occupation you choose.

The games also quite slow to start, this contributes alot to new player attrition. They see sweat camp and combibo as the entire game, and are unimpressed rather quickly.   I was not impressed after my first few days, although I told myself I had tried Darkfall 3 times before giving up.  May as well tough the starter parts out and see what else comes of this one.   Turns out its become a good time.  The games quite a bit more cerebral than any Ive played.  Going over charts, analyzing trends in  my own progress, and following the leads I generate myself is more what the game is about than the monsters and creatures themselves.

In retrospect, after 13 years of online gaming, I dont really see much of a difference between Entropia and any of these other MMOs out in terms of what the game is basically about.   You nailed it on the head when you said farming.   Every MMO on the market is about this (except DDO -- and its not really an MMO).

This is all about mindset as well.

I remember when we used to lock down zones in WoW and people would flock to the forums and complain about "griefers" and logout rather than fight us.  At the same time I have seen many people camp others in AoC or WoW, or exploit bind rushing.

In contrast some (me) find the rush of always needing to look over your shoulder the best part of FFA PvP.  Others don't find that attractive and consider anyone who attacks them while they PvE a "griefer."

AT release DFO had some horrid players.  1 yr later most of these are gone and the communicty is quite mature and there are even player initiatives to help new players out.  The other night after 1 established guild war dec'ed the NEW guild (an intro guild for new players) there were about 10 consecutive war declarations against that clan in a matter of minutes.  This speaks volumes about the player base and I have never seen this type of support in any game.

You see that kind of support because without it Darkfall would be dead.   Players had to band together and stop griefers in order to keep playing this title at all.   As reality set in that Darkfall was not what the players wanted the game lost many due to accelerated attrition.  My own guild went from 100 initial members down to 9 in the first 3 months.  Note, our numbers never went down.  Just our online presence.  In order to keep past a critical threshold of subscribers, both Aventurine and the players had to come up with solutions --- or be faced with the shutdown of the servers.

Darkfall was released just like AC2 was released -- in beta form.   AC2 didnt recover.  Will Darkfall?  Only time will tell.

Every game has been released in beta form.  I assure you DFO had a better release than many I have played.

Every game also suffers from "Tourists".  In factI would hazard that DFO has done a better job growing than any title released in the last 5 years outside of LOTRO and WoW.  This has nothing to do with the rule set.  other games have had the same rule set and survived for years (AC-DT, SB, EvE, etc).

Anyway have some respect for the OP sicne he has indicated he has considered DFO and doesn't like the ruleset.  Just as I will not play faction games, he is not interested in FFA.
