So, I have heard that AoC has made a number of strides since release and is now a very solid MMO. Having never tried it before, I am going to pick it up this weekend and give it a shot. However, I have a few questions about the game, the servers and the classes that will make it easier to get into the game. Any assistance would be appreciated!
- What server has the best population and has a fairly mature player-base? I do enjoy open PvP, so that will factor into the decision as well.
- How does open PvP work? I do not really see any factions, so is it a free-for-all?
- What classes are under-represented and in-demand at endgame? I enjoy most class types, though I prefer physical DPS over magic DPS. Other than that, I can play healer, DPS or tank. I would like a class that can PvP and is wanted/needed in Raids and instances.
- Are the raids and instances WoW-like? Meaning are they more than just tank-and-spank? Aion really disappointed me with its boss fights as did WAR.
- Since I am getting into the game fairly late, how difficult will it be to find a group for low level content? Are there low level instances?
- Are there PvP "battlegrounds" and how do they work? How often do they "pop"?
- Are there any UI mods that make the UI easier to use or that are needed for raiding/PvP?
- Any good guide sites out there to assist with speccing a character?
- Finally, sieging looks really interesting to me, how does sieging work? How often do they happen on PvP-servers as compared to PvE-Servers?
Thanks for any help you can provide me. I look forward to giving this a shot. Robert E. Howard was always one of my favorite authors growing up and the only reason I did not try Conan sooner was my intense dislike of Funcom. It sounds like they have really gotten the game turned around, however, and I would like to see what they have done with it!

Obviously I'm the pink text. Hopefully some of my insight is a bit helpful. I played back at launch and then two or so times between then and now. I've just recently returned to the game.
I'll give you a helpful hint. Go to Best Buy. The game is like $10 boxed and a 60 day gamecard only cost me $12 ($14 technically, we showed them Gamestop's site on our cellphone and saved two bucks by price matching).
The only thing I'll toss in here is go to the O-board and grab a lvl 1-20 free forever trial from the site. That'll let you play with the different classes, learn the game before buying and burning through your 30 day free play time you get with the box.
It'll also give you time to shop around for a box as i got mine off of Amazon for $1.49.
SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
yes there are WoW like instances (aka dungeons) at level 80. some are tank and spank, other are harder, some are puggable other require serious groups. since you can only do them once a week and drops are random it can take a wile to gear up your char.
Sieges unfortunately are still sort of broken. i'v participated in a few and the lag was just impossible. all my graphics settings were at minimum but lag still made it pretty impossible to do anything usefull or enjoyable. most people will tell you the same. it's really not about how high tech your comp is, it's a server overload problem.
basicly how it works is, you have to be part of a guild that has a t3 city. every few days there is a window of time where one of the avilable Battke Keeps ( there are only so many BK per server) becomes vulnerable. any guild that has a t3 city can bid to attack the vulnerable BK. to bid you need points gained from doing pvp. if you win the bid, you get to attack the BK next time it become vulnerable. you have about 1.5 hour window to capture the enemy BK. there is siege equipment you can buy, but in the end it usually comes down to whom ever has the more casters on their team. unfortunately you can't just sign up for a sieges. you need to be part of a guild that either has a BK or works hard to gain the points to attak other guild' BKs often.
if you are really curious to see what it looks liek just youtube some sige vidoes.
i would like to add that there is a grait difference between playing casters and mele in AoC ESPECIALY when it comes to pvp. mele are cosiderably harder to play and have a much steeper learninc curve because fo the combo system. try both and see what you enjoy the most.
i would also like to stress that to be competitive in this game you need a pretty uber computer and very fast internet otherwise pvp becomes a very frustrating mess of swing n miss. even with a serious machine unfortunately this game still has lots of lag especially in larger group battles.
by no means am i trying to turn anyone away from AoC. i myself have 3 level 80s and really enjoyed levelling them and discovering the world. in the end i guess i just got bored and just didn't feel like levelling one more. it's non the less a grait game and should be tryed by any mmo fan.

Thanks for the UI! I noticed the guy was using it in the guild siege video and I was wondering what that wonderful UI was!
Edit: Now I must find out how to install UIs.

Oh, you're welcome. It's a nice UI. :P
Put the Customized Folder in Data > Gui and thats that. If you want, you can copy the "TextColors.xml" file from the Default folder, put that in the Customized folder and change the text colors for chat. In my opinion, it makes chat far easier to distinguish, considering all of the chat colors are the same.
Don't bother editing it in the Default folder, as the patcher will just repatch it back to what it was, it needs to be in the Customized folder if you do it.
Thanks!
