to the people who wonder why this is happening in greece:
the economy in Greece is doing the worst in nearly whole of europe, the state-dept grows 1% each month of the GDP, which is, alot.
EU is making plans to help Greece with its finances, but this plan involves that greece increases taxes, thus the VAT increase...
Small correction Greece don't want to depend on the help of EU and emphasize on NOT having asked for now (money) and raised taxes to solve problem on their own.

increasement of the taxes in greece is a condition for the EU to help greece, there are many more conditions, greece needs help from the EU, the EU wasn´t founded for nothing.
Obviously they say they don´t want it, but its neccesary.

Small correction Greece don't want to depend on the help of EU and emphasize on NOT having asked for now (money) and raised taxes to solve problem on their own.
Greece cooked the books to gain entry into the EU and are now paying the price. No one in the EU is going to bail them out the Germans just refused and the French say they want to help but won't. Greece is going to have to go through some hard times probably go cap in hand to the IMF for a bail out if they haven't already.
Instead of getting their economy in order before joining they cooked the books to make it look that way now it's time for some EU tough love!

Problem with the greek economy is corruption..
Greece is very sick and only 2% vaT raise will not help much... they need to start paying taxes over all their income..
The problems in Greece are bad for the whole european economy, its not good for consumer trust and not good for the euro... Greece is currently like a flue and every other country in europe ,might catch it if they don't make greece better very fast

That is one side of the story, the second is EU couldn't afford "another UK" as in another EU member not joining EUR zone after having to setup exceptional contracts already with UK and Denmark so they proceeded in full knowledge about the special Greece situation (of course not officially). The alternative would have been exceptional contracts with Greece too and probably with a lot more (Portugal, Spain, Ireland ) ? So half Europe would have been absent from EUR Zone to the point it wouldn't make sense to call it EUR Zone ? and in the end drop idea of Euro at all. During the last years almost any EUR Zone country infringed EU's stability contract (cooking books is a EU-wide practice) and for example Germany and France do it even right now the moment i write these. A lot of Country's got several warnings about that but nonetheless same time last year they gave away billion of dollers to help bankers as easy as someone go piss. So please..
Btw UK's state-dept share in relation to GDP is same then Greece's. Good luck UK
US state-dept is 3 trillion dollars. good luck US
