For crafting Star Wars Galaxies has probably the most complex and entertaining crafting ever concieved.

For me be a toss up between Fallen Earth and Ryzom. Ryzom for being able to affect the end stats and choose what HP/Mana/Etc modifiers you want. Fallen Earth for the really nifty fact that you can craft while you adventure or even while you are offline.

It might depend on what you like about crafting.  For instance, my favorite part is harvesting.  Ryzom has the best system for that and Fallen Earth is pretty good too.  But neither of those games will let you earn much useful currency from crafting so if your desire is to be a wealthy crafter then some other game might be better.  Tell us what you like most about crafting and you might get more useful replies.

best crafting you would have to drop down to F2P games and head over to last chaos . there not only can you craft rare item drops but you can even craft pets .

just dont spend any money in the cash shop there wonderful for banning account with in minutes of a large cash shop transaction .

Lol I'm just bored... decided to see what games have a good crafting system.

EVE IMO, though I really wouldn't call it crafting as considering the setting it's an industry.

Best crafting systems are the ones in games with player-run economies. The less stuff you have from NPCs and magical drops, the better the demand is for crafted items.

best crafting i've come across so far is in ryzom, even better than swg.  However worst resource gathering to go with it though

The best?  Well...  That's certainly open for debate.  Here's my top 5, in no particular order.

Star Wars Galaxies - Well...  This WAS the best...  last time I played it...  which was pre-CU.  The original Star Wars Galaxies crafting system was the best in any MMO to date.  However, SoE ruined the game, so take that for what it is.

Mortal Online - Excellent craft system with item diversity dependent on which components that you use. Lots of player dependency, so lots of potential for trade.

Ryzom - Great craft system with item diversity dependent on material quality.  However, everyone in the game can learn every craft, so trade becomes obsolete.

Wurm Online - Might be the best crafting game ever made.  But it's horribly tedious.  I mean...  HORRIBLY TEDIOUS.  Still, I have gone back to play it multiple times to see what new stuff they have added.  Anyone who really loves crafting should give it a go.

Fallen Earth - No individual recipe diversity, but there are a huge number of recipes.  Just about everything in the game is player made.  Lots of trade potential.

I have not played Darkfall online.  I have heard that it does have good crafting, but it doesn't have the diversity of the above 4 MMOs.

I know EQ2's isn't the most in depth or anything, but the process of making items is the best I've played. It's like it's own little mini game, you have actual skills to use while crafting to counter material catches, loose material, etc when making clothes for example.

    Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

    Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

I like the one of FE most.

The amount of recipes is incredible. For crafting you get not only skill points + new items, you als gain XP, which is pretty neat. Not to mention that you can queue like 20 or so items, and the crafting runs in the background while playing or even while beeing offline. It's also nice that you can create your own skill books to learn new recipes. :) It's also nice that you can take the items apart, or keep improving them (ie turning a jacket into a black or camouflage jacket, or adding a scope to a rifle you have already used for a longer time). Some items take hours and hours to craft, so it's nice that when you log in you see your char has completed the item since the last time you played, and you get tons of XP for having completed it. It also gives you the feeling of actually having crafted something meaningful, if it takes hours and hours for more complex items to be finished.

Dunno if it is the best, since I haven't played all MMORPGs in existance, but it's the one I like most of those I played.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

I've never played it but I've heard more than a few people say that Istaria's (formerly Horizon) crafting system is actually one of the best around. Can anyone comment?

  • charlespaynecharlespayne Member UncommonPosts: 381

A Tale in the desert has a good crafting system.

DFO, FE, SWG and Ryzom have useful crafting, but not fun or interesting crafting. You just sit and wait for the bar to cross the screen, or the numbers to count down.

While I haven't played every MMO out there on the market, i've played a good share of them and I generally at least "TRY" to use their crafting systems, if they have one.

My #1 for crafting AND resource gathering would have to be.....

    Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

The crafting has you involved in the creation, not just click and your done. You have to... dare I say strategize? You're given a certain amount of points to use, and each step of the process might require a certain amount of points, it's rarely ever the same. Problems arise, that you need to fix, etc. It's an amazing system really, you can craft close to some of the best items in the game. Also, when crafting, they might show you the schematic for crafting a Sword, but whatever stats are added too it depends on which magical dusts/etc that you add to it. Therefore making a plethora of possibilities.

As with the resource gathering, it's nothing exceptional beyond most MMO's, but what I enjoy is the graphic that ensues. Take for instance Lumberjacking. You literally go up to a tree, pull out your axe and start swinging away, the tree shudders with every hit, and when your timer completes, it ACTUALLY falls to the ground with an earth shattering thud and quivers a little, leaves falling from it. Makes you feel almost like Paul Bunyan!

Also you have sets of equipment, separate from your adventuring gear, that increases your Crafting Skills, and also another set just for your Gathering skills.

I guess a part of me is bias in my opinion because i'm a VanBoi, but let's be honest, it's with good reason.

    _____

I haven't played Fallen Earth, but I hear a lot about it's crafting being good.

EQ2 also has a decent system, it's at the very least, involving.

I don't know if it still does but it was clearly the best during Pre-cu and even during the cu.

EVE has a killer system since it's a player run economy.

  • vistakahvistakah Member Posts: 118

The problem with crafting is not in the system but the game that makes it so you don't need to bother with crafted businesses. Though i don't like space games that crafting system is awesome. Its actually a business in that player run economy. All other games even EQ2 have awesome crafting mechanics but you don't need any of the crafted items because loot dropped is like most games FAR better then player made regretfully.

also planeshift has a useful crafting system, good one too if a little overly realistic(i think that'd be the best expression)

  • TheHatterTheHatter Member Posts: 2,547

I don't think Fallen Earth has a good crafting system at all. It might, if there was a little bit of diversity and if it had something that even slightly resembled an economy. Fallen Earth crafting is just annoying at best. You have to wait long periods of time to get anything and the materials are just a pain to manage and gather. There are alot of materials, but only a few are rare and they are very rare.

People like to tout it as one of the best crafting games around. IMHO, it's probably one of the worst crafting games around. Everyone and their brother is a crafter.... so going crafter just gimps you.

The best crafting system is Vanguard by a mile,it's a whole other game. You actually level up crafting like you do adventuring and diplomacy, their are quests and exploration involved.

Ill let these vids show you why it's number one. Anyone who loves crafting is missing out on a top crafting system that let's you craft anything from wallpaper to boats and fish tanks, you name it, they have it to craft.

www.youtube.com/watch everything you see here is crafted by players.

The only thing this game lacks is player,it deserves a second chance,it's a beautiful old school type mmorpg without any instances and seameless vast world.

    Download the trail.

This list basically mirrors exactly what I was gonna say. I've played all 5, and they all would have gotten the same mention.

    1. Eve  2.Ryzom 3.UO 4.Fallen Earth 5.Darkfall

Eve wins out for me due to the in game economy and how freaking technical all the industrial mechanics are.

Ryzom would win if were just talking about basic gathering/crafting mechanics. They have a great system but no economy.  They just give stuff away so it takes from the game a bit.

Not so much relevant to the discussion of crafting, which I've never really been that interested in, but I really miss the resource gathering mechanics from SWG.

Shifting resources with varied weaknesses/strengths that you had to manually hunt down to a hotspot, where you would set up your own little mining camp consisting of extractors, power generators and possibly a small house to hold the resources and a vendor to sell them.

I've always preferred to be the resource-gatherer rather than the crafter. I like the interdependancy and social bonds the role fosters. I was a miner in UO and still spend a significant chunk of time mining in EVE too.
