Not only are the graphics amazing, but the UI is looking very sleek as well. Nice to see they kept FFXI's simplicity despite having to add a hotbar and other modern UI elements.
Those are Peiste mobs. The one on the right is. Extremely nasty mobs in FFXI with AoE paralyze and AoE dispell. They exist in the past in FFXI (Wings of Godess expansion). I was always speculating that the reason they choose the same races just slightly adjusted is that they will conclude the storyline of FFXI with a bridge to FFXIV. Maybe we will see Abyssea make this bridge towards the world of FFXIV.
They introduced synergy (party cfafting) and upgradeable weapons and armor which will also be in FFXIV.

I wonder if they used the same hotbar system as FFXI but just put in on the bottom. IMO its was the best of any because it didn't cover up half my screen. As a blm/whm I could put all my offensive spells on ctrl and my healing spells on alt and it made it so much easier to get the the spells I wanted and not get overwhelmed by all these icons.
But then again I don't know if there will be dual classes so if not then this will work just fine. Although I think I would be even better without a minimap to have less crap on my screen. I also hope you can customize your UI as in move things around and put stuff closer to the bottom so you have less screen area wasted.
I pray that just like FFXI there aren't any sort of 3rd party add-ons that people can use. I like when everyone is looking at the relatively same screen. I just feel like letting in 3rd party tools can let exploits and such seep in.

Actually, FFXI has no 'hotbars' in the regular meaning. All was and still is done by macro's (4000 macro slots since the introduction of the macro books) or you could just scroll through your WS/spell/abilities in the command palette.
I really hope they have integrated a revamped version of the macro books in FFXIV!
They are looking great, and seem to still keep that final fantasy feel with them, something I was worried might be lost if the graphics advance to far ahead.

I have to wonder if we'll even need the macros quite as much as we did in XI. The biggest need for macros in that game was gear swaps (the biggest flaw with the game imo) which you can't actually do in XIV.
Given how the new combat system is a lot more interactive and reactionary I can't see chaining skills together on one hotkey being all that useful.

I certainly agree, since macro's in FFXIV aren't any longer such a crucial tool as they are in FFXI, that there is probably no need for 4000 slots. On the other hand, macro's (as implemented in FFXI) have a versatility for which I think there might still be a need, even after adding hotbars. I'm thinking of shouts, <pos>, slash commands of various kinds, etc.
Of course, I have no idea how all these things will be implemented in FFXIV, so all this is mere speculation.
I understand SE withholding info on gameplay and all that stuff, but I really wish they would just explain to us how the UI and macro system will work.

Okay now, you see... screenshots from the Gamescom last year, and the screenshot from the Famitsu magazine last week. The UI has been changed quite a bit.
Now, who is to say that it won't be changed even more as time, and especially the beta, goes on? I'd guess that SE wants as much feedback from the UI and macro system as possible. In the most radical case, the whole UI/Macro system could be reworked in time for the retail version.
So, what's the point in telling us how UI/Macros work now, when it's most likely going to go through some changes, light or heavy, before it's complete?
It's the same reason gameplay info is not being told to us. That stuff ain't ready, and they don't want to tell public about it before it is really ready. The public, you see, is not a very intelligent being. SE tells them one thing, they think of it as an unchangeable fact and if it sucks now, it will suck later- and if it's changed along the way, SE lied to us. It's a lose-lose situation.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I lovelovelove that the UI is very minimalist and transparent. This is going to look nice on my HDTV

Sure those graphics are nice, but let's see some of them sheep mobs!! That's what I'll be fighting.
