So like an idiot I bought the Steam FFXI compilation deal at 7 bucks thinking it would be worth it to get to play one of the few popular MMOs I never got around to. So far my experience has been a frustrating battle with PlayOnline that has me feeling like I wasted 7 dollars on nothing.
First of all, the registration server keeps saying my card is invalid AND/OR the server is down. Well Square-Enix, which one is it? Is the server down or is my card invalid? Alright, congratulations Squenix you have me questioning my own sanity. Maybe I did enter something in wrong. I'll just go back and change it. No no...it's not that simple. Want to change your billing information? Guess what, you have to re-enter everything from scratch. And god forbid you decide to maybe try it again later (hey, maybe the server really is down) because then you'll be entering in EVERYTHING from scratch. Registration code, personal information, PlayOnline email password, password for your PlayOnline account...EVERYTHING. That's not even including the frustration of having to go through the secure 3-D process every time as well.
None of this would be so bad if the PlayOnline browser weren't so goddamn annoying with its stupid little chocobo pointer, ridiculously long load times, and its insane teeny pop-techno music mix from Hell. All by itself, it rivals the worst Japanese grind-fest RPGs I've ever played and I haven't even gotten into the game yet.
Now I know my card is not invalid. And I've researched this particular problem and apparently it's a very common occurrence, especially since the middle of last year. And apparently the Squenix English phone reps know nothing (their best suggestions being to wait 30 minutes and try again, or try different abbreviations in the billing address). I've done all of that. And from my best knowledge the server isn't down.
Even if I were to concede that my card MAY not be valid or that my bank may not accept the charge or whatever that's still no excuse for PlayOnline being such a pain in the ass.

Had same issues. Also, I bought US version so I had to install and uninstall different versions of PlayOnline several times for reasons I can't remember right now, finding right version of PlayOnline was also damn difficult. Well, I still have the key unused, as I couldn't finish the account creation. I've never seen so useless and difficult to use software as PlayOnline.
I read some had the issue fixed, when they verified the card at the bank or something. I have verified it already and no other game or online shop has had any issues with it, but still had problems with PlayOnline. I recall there was some sorta restriction, that I couldn't possibly pay with my card no matter what I did. Damn, can't remember exactly why.
So I don't really have any other advice than giving up on it, and waiting for FFXIV if you want to try a Final Fantasy game.

Waiting on Xsyon & betaing stuff
Also having the same issues. Very disappointed. Wanted to give the game a try before jumping into FFXIV later on this year.
Haha Square Enix are so genial, it's the perfect noob secure system ^^
There's always I chance for something new and exciting to happen, so I can always wait until tomorrow.
No, it's horrible and serves no purpose! It's just there to annoy the consumer.
Although I'm pretty sure it's dropped for XIV so maybe try that when it comes out .
In a funny way, this is actually fairly accurate. If a person doesn't have the patience to sit through this atrocity known as the PlayOnline interface in order to get into the game, then they most assuredly WILL NOT have the patience required to play the awesome, beautiful game that lies on the other side.
That being said, the game is old, so is Play Online. Good thing for us, Square likes to innovate and move away from this type of thing and they DID state that PlayOnline will not be a part of FFXIV.
Please Dont talk bad about the Chocobo Mouse pointer. He makes me happy everytime i log on Playonline.I am also glad to hear that Playonline will not be in 14. It is a pain but its not impossible to navigate(or even that hard /shrug)
"That's ludicrous. Are you seriously suggesting that I get better at the game in order to compete?"-Random Failure in the Global Agenda Beta forums.
OMG I just hate when people reads my mind! The point is: You won't have small 11-14 year old kids spoiling the game. And please remember that this game is allmost nothing, but party grinding, so you can't have noobs running around.
If you don't believe me, then go see some of the "I hate grinding games!" threads.
EDIT: By the way, I think Square Enix just find something else that will help them keep noobs out of the game. They do nothing but show that they want addicted gamers to play their games, they not only gonna be addicted, but they have to be good at it too, because it's usually some heavy challenges you have to do.
So Sorry if I hurt anybody by using noob, but you know I'm saying: Don't play Final Fantasy if you want to play for fun, because it's just hard challenges. (It's said many times, no jumping, no swimming ... the game is not made to be any kind of fun or easy)
There's always I chance for something new and exciting to happen, so I can always wait until tomorrow.
Everytime I read another post about how someone can not get past PlayOnline it makes me laugh so hard lol.
While the system is not as easy as say create an account and log in it is not the evil that most people make it out to be.
People these days are used to having everything spoon fed to them and ANY and I mean ANY little obsticle where they actually may have to read instructions makes them cry wolf.
It reminds me of an old proverb with the Fox who could not reach the grapes and finaly just left it alone and told itself that the grapes were not ripe.
Do some reading and get through it its not hard.
