The 3rd thing to do

tolketolke Member UncommonPosts: 39

The main thing to do in a MMORPG is fight. The second thing you can do is craft. Period.

Except for WoW. The third thing is to fool around.

People make crowds in major cities, and it is a party. People dance, drink alcohol, duel, swim, and jump around. When you type /silly your avatar makes a joke. There is a rare instrument that makes everybody dance. There are potions that turn you into a race of the opposite faction. There are pets and there is food that makes a critter your pet for a few minutes. There is a toy store in Dalaran. There are silly videos on YouTube. It is not a serious, straightfaced game.

I am not going to argue that WoW is better than every other game, but it has an element that I can't find in any other game: humor. This is what I want to see in other games too. (Next to my wish for a craft system that is actually fun.)

During developement all games are sandboxes. At release they all become theme parks.

Every game has emotes and cute little social mechanics.

Funny thing is they don't even rp in WoW. Its freaking hilarious when you get a few rpers together in mmos.

What nonsense is this, we all know the third thing to do is read up extensively about your class on 3rd party sites to make sure you are playing to the best of your abilities.  The only thing that really counts is making sure you get the shiny things at the end.  Why should I talk to my group members when all I really want are phat purpz?

MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift

A game with a lot of irreverential humour is Dofus too.

But I'd bet anything than even in more "serious" settings (namely post-apocalyptic or the coming zombies/vampires mmos), you'll always find ways to goof around and some little jokes/humourous references from the devs.

You can find a lot of humor with events, items, etc in Everquest 2

Yeah, that's great.  You get to stand around telling jokes to yourself and dancing with yourself and making pets so you can pretend like you have company.

Ugg, in my time in WoW nobody actually talked to each other.  Oh, there was the area-wide chat with people insulting each other but nobody just hung out and socialized WITH each other.  There were places where lots of people were all standing around in the same area but they didn't interact with each other.  People will get angry at me for saying this I'm sure but that was my experience with the game.

This is one of the things I miss the most about old EQ in it's glory days; back then the other people in the game weren't just decorations to look at, you actually interacted with them.
