1. Will there be character wipes when the game is released? It'd be unfair to start a game at release and have to defend yourself against people who have high skilled characters already. Release should = a level playing field.
2. Is there full loot PvP?
3. Can I build a house for myself?
4. Can players build cities?
5. Can guilds build guild houses (like mansions)?
6. Can someone who doesn't craft or gather crafting materials make it in the game? Meaning a full adventurer, selling the spoils of his adventures or a soldier/mercenary making money by hiring out his sword.

You can do all of those things but there isn't any point in doing most of them.
1 ) building a house serves no purpose what so ever other than to simply own one, you can't furnish them you can't do anything with them other than simply having one.
2 ) You can "apparently" build a city although apparently that's all broken at the moment anyway so it doesn't matter. Although even when it's fixed there is again nothing you can do with this city there are no kind of special mechanics that in place for cities.
3 ) The actual PvP in the game has no purpose either as there isn't actually any reason to fight each other; other than for the sake of it.
Basically you want to play Darkfall.
Trust me buy darkfall, MO is going to fail and fail hard
1. yes, everyone will start with clean account.
2. hmm... its even full drop & full loot. For example eve is full drop & half loot sandbox.
3. yes, you can build it, or buy already build house from another player.
4. Yes, currently more a villages with a palisade around it, and a gate. I think even a moat has been mentioned, but I just don't feel the need to search for such info.
5. yes, owner of the guild has to build own house and transform it into guild house
6. As MO is a sandbox, you're allowed to do whatever game mechanics , and your own imagination allows you to.
You can be a mercenary and defend gatherers or crafters from PKers.
You can even build your own bridge, and play a bridge troll collecting taxes from players for crossing the river using your bridge. Well .. that's my idea, what's yours ?
You may play a hunter, sell collected furs or exchange them for other things.
Watch for thieves btw
One question to you: why didn't you ask those question on official MO forum ?

I wanted to play Darkfall, but apparently the community centers around PvP. I'm not looking for a PvP-centric sandbox game. I do want to PvP in a sandbox game, but I want the reasons to be because of territorial control, not just because I can, like in Darkfall. I want to go into a game, build my character up the way I want to, explore without having to worry about going to a bank all the time, so I don't keep losing all of my stuff, and build a player ran city with friends. I'd like the guild I join to conquer other guilds that are on land with good resources that we need to grow. I don't like random ganking, griefing, and full loot PvP in general.
You might want to check out Ryzom. It does have PvP owned areas, that provide special resources. It is mainly PvE, with no classes and totally skill driven. It has the best harvesting/crafting and creature AI of any game, IMHO.

Totally agree- Ryzom is an awesome game and probably what you're looking for... Too bad the population is so low or I would still be playing.
Nate.. while it's still in the last few days of Open Beta why not take advantage of the ability to download and try ti for free? 30 minutes of playing will tell you more about the game than reading 30 threads on here will.
Good Luck!

All your questions assume you are considering buying a game, MO is not a game, it is a poorly done proof of concept. I can tell you 100% that today you can barely move let alone do anything else. If you want to get into a game early, that may or may not survive, for the long haul, as in 2+ years, maybe you will like MO. If you actually want to play a game that has the essence of what you are asking about, then buy Darkfall and never look back.
EDIT: I just re-read your post and you will want to get in on Darkfall as it is exactly what you want.
This is the big issue for new players when you tell them to do like that. They do not get the view of MO with 30 minutes of playing, thats just laughable.
You can burn me, but i wont die.
There is nothing to expore in this "project". Landscape is empty, all you can do is try to kill several pigs/rabbits/weasels located by the starter towns. If you move deeper into the continent then there's simply nothing there.
The only way to "play" this "project" is to macro grind wood and metal by the starter towns then try to barter at the nps for coins.
Welcome to the wonderful vision of "swedish sandbox".
new fabernum is great, you can jump in the roofs with jumping skill over 60 and shoot arrows to people at gate and they dont see it coming xD

lol dude, you dont get resources from starter towns. you need to go further in to the wilds and there are mobs...

Sure, I have counted 7 gazelles at one place. Three horses at the other.
Way too many, imo - they have to keep it "hardcore"(c)
you are right there are overall too few mobs in the steppes... but there are big spots where they live.
1-Yes, of course. A big wipe before release, everyone will start at same state.
2-Yes, Full loot PvP
3-Yes you can build a house for yourself. But you may ask peoples to help you, it's easier.
4-Yes, but there is no "preset city spot" with streets, etc, atm.
5-Yes, they can build Keep, and even a palissade to protect a specific aera, and let peoples build house inside.
6-You can o a lot of thing, but yuo have to imagine by yourself. I personally did:
-Guide. No in game maps, so noobs often pay a little to find places.
-Postman. No global banking, so crafters often need someone to carry goods
-Hunter, to find bones, or rare scales
-Explorer, to find rare ressources to gather or pick up
-"Red hunter" (find & kill PK)
etc etc...

I tried Ryzom. If I'm going to play a sandbox game, it MUST have player ran cities, that can be razed to the ground through siege-based PvP. I'm a DAoC player at heart, and love RvR type PvP. However, I also love skill-based leveling systems, where I can create whatever type of character I want. FFA PvP games is what I prefer, but I prefer to play them with a mature community, so that they don't degrade into gang wars. I like a nice mature political atmosphere, where each guild (government) wars with others ONLY when they have wronged another or when they have much needed resources.
Darkfall, from what I've read is just running around and ganking. It could be what I described above, but the community isn't mature or intelligent enough for that. They lack any vision to use the sandbox for something better. I'm also not crazy about full-loot, but I can live with that if people play the way I envision a sandbox to be played. When people play FFA PvP sandbox games like gang wars, then full loot is too much for me to bear.
Aside from the way people describe Darkfall as being similar to a bunch of gangs running around ganking defenseless people, I also read that there's a very boring and steep skill grind that everyone must do before you even have a chance against gankers. I've pretty much had my fill of boring senseless grinds my last 8 years of MMO playing. But keep talking, maybe I'll hear something that I haven't heard before.
Jump in the beta now while you can and try the game. Yes things may change before release but only a very, very little. What's there may be enough for you to continue, maybe not. But asking here on this site is pointless, the place is populated by jaded haters, people with "invested interests" (on both sides) and idealistic fanbois to the extent that any form of moderate conversation or point of view is completely blurred out by the trolling.
Try it and see what YOU think.

You have basically described MO average gamer in your second paragraph, which I have underlined in red.
I'm speaking from from what I have experienced this week in MO beta.
This, imo, is a quintessence of who you will meet in a brave new sandbox world there:
"Once game is released i wana be a mass serial killer and even a pervese one "jack the ripper" style!
Im goin to kill every fucker i see and chop his ballsack off and hang them from his nose and same with the woman but invertly!
Thou it is thy shame that it won't happen since i cannot install the fucking client!" - http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/38372-i-want-jack-ripper.html
Well, I'm downloading the client right now to try it. There's a couple things I like about MO that Darkfall doesn't have.
1. No map. Without a map, it's easier to hide in the wilderness and build a solitary life if you want. That makes it harder for griefers and gankers to find you, and if you build a house and learn the lay of the land like the back of your hand, you'll have an advantage over those intruding on your property.
2. A skill-cap. People think DF is a huge skill grind because there isn't a skill cap. With a skill cap, new players are supposedly able to defend themselves against a more skilled player "IF" they use everything at their disposal and are smart players.
3. Developers who say that their game isn't focused on PvP. They said their game is a sandbox game with many elements, PvP is just one element. Darkfall player claim that the developers said that DF is a hardcore PvP game and that its focus is on PvP.
