On a previous note - I thank all who helped with the past laptop issue... I chose the Sony Vaio and am so happy with it... most games I get a good 20-30 FPS on HIGH and Crysis a SOLID 15-20 FPS on Medium... So for that I thank all who replied to that.
I am still learning different names of hardware. Right now I seem to favor Intel - but I don't want this thread to become an AMD & Intel war.
I am wondering if someone could take the time to chose the BEST system - on ibuypower.com Ive looked through different systems and looked on forums about chipsets... seems the i7 extreme is a waste of money... and has no real use in a Game. the 920 seems to be favored but I would chose something up one just to be safe.
But I would love for this thread to be a general... education towards what makes a GOOD gaming computer and why. Thanks!

Id recommend you to go check that website, I love that guy,
www.3dgameman.com/
and the best way to know what is a good rig just go to a website that sell pc hardware, look in the list of hardware, google, read review. thats the best way in my opinion if you want to learn about whats the best hardware for your money.
Right now, there is nothing one upping the 920. You get overpriced for no reason or you can get the 920. It's the best processor on the market and I've had mine for almost a year and a half and I love it. OC'd to 3.8ghz with just (decent) air cooling and it only raised my temp a couple degrees.
If you want a good rig for a decent price, just build it yourself. It's really not that hard at all. Basically, it's the same thing as plugging in an old N64 or SNES cartridge.... with a couple screws here and there. The only hard part for a newbie, is getting the right parts that fit together. If you're not comfortable building one, just look at some tutorials on google.
If you do want to go that route, people love building computers for other people. All you have to do is put it together. It's fun to price hunt and try to figure out what is the best for a given amount on newegg, when you're dealing with parts. It's not that much fun looking on a site like iBuyPower trying to find the best ripoff for your buck.

if you want to get a good rig i honestly suggest you learn how to put a PC together yourself (it really isnt that hard at all, like plugging in a bunch of power plugs to the wall) and buy parts off newegg, do your research, find what will suit you best and find some videos on youtube that teach you how to put a computer together. a few pointers:
Hard drives, go for western digital
for processors, AMD is best bang for your buck, Intel has the best processors but are pretty expensive.
for graphics cards, ATI all the way atm, they have best bang for your buck (4850s, 4870s, 4890s) and hands down the most powerful GPUs out at the moment (5850, 5870)
for PSUs, corsair is very nice, however other people have their preferences.
RAM, again corsair is very good here as well, but people have their own preferences as well.
Well the reason I chose a company such as ibuypower... is sure I could find better deals on newegg... I get that. BUT I don't know how to put together a Water cooling system and I don't know how to overclock a system and I don't know... blah blah blah.
I am getting 5000$ for a Computer... say before 2011. I heard their are some new stuff coming from Nvidia and AMD and Intel or something that techies are buzzing about.
Why I asked the question is - I wanted someone to put together a 'good' rig so I could see what a good rig looked like.
Thank you for all the feedback and advice.
You would probably go for a Core i7 930 now instead of a 920. I don't think we will see anything more out of computers until late 2011 early 2012. If you want to buy April would be the time. Right now AMD has the more powerful platform with the Socket G34. Quad Channel Memory (8 memory dimms per socket), Dual Sockets, and 12 cores per CPU. However this would be a Workstation setup not a Desktop yet would cost nearly the same as a Core i7 desktop build.
Okay I am 'dumb' or more or less a noob to some of these words. What is the difference of a Desktop and a Workstation?
Workstations are built to perform productivity tasks usually done in a work environment like compression, and rendering images. Desktops are used by consumers for their own computer needs. Thus the very simple naming. Work Station, and on Top of the Desk.
So ive looked at some things but still unsure... would this be considered one of the better gaming rigs?

That's up there, yes. You're going to pay an arm and leg for that though.
With those vid cards, I'd suggest a bigass, high-res monitor to push 'em.

$4,240.00 Was the price tag it has..... Which makes me wonder if that's legit? Because everything in there is good company's and such...
lol they charging $900 per HD5970. Its a total ripoff.
Nice is a relative term when talking about rigs it also depends on what your budget is.
I have a Phenom II X3 720 BE with 4 GBs of DDR3 an ATI 5770 and an M4A78T-E motherboard. I use win 7 OS and have a gaming tower and peripherals.
For me it's nice and easy to upgrade and comes at a cheap price. There are others that would no doubt scoff at it but it plays everything I want.

Yes that isareally good gaming pc thats bound to last a long time. However i am concerned tha tyou are throwing money away as it is cheaper even just getting a motherboard or barebone bundle and adding the wrest yourself
