Anyone else hoping that FFXIV's monsters are a bit more menacing than FFXI's?
From what I've seen in gameplay vids killing big doe-eyed birds and tiny little flying lizards is making a return.
BUT, from the latest screenshot that giant salamder type monster looked wicked.
All I'm saying is if I'm forced to commit cute little mandragora/crab genocide again from 1-?? level i seriously might cry. Then again my evil side smiled a little everytime one of those cute little bastards died.

I expect it'll follow the MMO norm of focussing on smaller, less menacing critters for the first few levels then progressing up to more interesting stuff, just like in XI. I'm pretty sure we've seen some artwork for mandragoras in XIV so expect to see them in the low levels again. SE said something about the higher levels having a large focus on mechanical opponents though if I recall, so we'll probably see some interesting magitek enemies.
Considering that the game has a focus on fighting multiple opponents at once though at least your sadistic side will get a lot more satisfaction from slaughtering whole families of mandragoras at once this time round. :P
Just to clear something up the monster you see in the only in game screen shot released so far is called a Peiste. They are in FF11.

So yes, I'm betting most of the monsters from 11 will be in 14... If you are worried they will all look cute that is because you have only seen the cute ones from 11. Check out the others monsters listed on FFXIcyclopedia and you can see there are PLENTY of them that are quite evil and menacing.
For instance http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Vampyr check out those monsters... then tell me your concerned they will look too cute.
I know that ffxi had some tougher looking monsters, that wasn't the point of my original post. And I really didnt care what the lizard was called. And I know that most of the meaner looking monsters were really only encountered in ffxi's missions and endgame content.
My point was that 75% or more of the monsters that you leveled off of in ffxi (worms, crabs, dragonflies, crawlers, mandragoras, etc.) were not monster-like at all, and I hope that ffxiv puts us against something that at least appears to be an enemy.
I see.
You can't kill Bowzer before you jump on a lot of cute looking turtle and goomba's heads...
Its a way game makers can "scale" monsters to look progressively more menacing the harder the content is intended to be. If we started off killing things that looked like they were evil incarnate what would they build up to?
That and half of Final Fantasy is "look at all the cute, its oozing everywhere."
IE: chocobos, Moogles, and every other iconic character that appears in most of their games are exceptionally cute, cute sells.
I too would like to kill some mean lookin critters, but if they got rid of the cute I would be sad. I like how they have it set up to make only the really hard things are really mean looking. Thats just my two cents.
I agree.
Most of the cute is on the "good guys" side though in your examples (chocos/moogles/etc.)
Even in the single player FF games the monsters went from simple to more evil, but they all for the most part had a look that made them the enemy.
For the love of god, no more crabs, seriously, PLEASE. ty
Hehe yeah we had more then enough crabs in ffxi so lets not flood the servers in ffxiv with it.
Also the visuals of mobs are very good hearing the specs they require for the tests so I think we get really nice mobs.
The game will be good for a lot of years to come so graphics will be pretty high comparing to the current standards (i hope).
