I agree... It was a good concept, and if they improve it and update it to todays standards, it might actually be one to watch. As for STO.. pfft.. what a disapointment that was.
On a side note, serpentis, is hella fimiliar to me. Were you a core tester or had some dealings with Shield of the Republic?
Yea the name sounds familiar to me too, but I dont think it was sotr, I think it was Phalanx. lol That guild that had folks getting onto them for the one guy "breaking nda" and repeatedly lashing out at Perpetual on the forums, I dont recall his particular name (I know it wasnt Serpentis) but all that was a big laugh for a while. I seem to recall some other things they were upset about, like uhh, people getting let go at christmas or something. I think it was Lilly who got at Perpetual for that.
I do recall seeing your name Mafiaso, pretty well and the one guy from Stratics, what was his name? Then who can forget the Permadeath guy, "Deth" who insisted permadeath was the ultimate means of replayability and fun, wanted wii sticks for controllers... Meanwhile he wanted to "climb to the highest mountain top in rome" ect ect lol. Tyranus and Synergy writing that longass crafting post...
It was coming from everywhere, looking back now everyone had something to say.

Actually, I was thinking the same thing when I saw your name. I was one of the core testers... so, prolly saw me running around killing stuff or something.
You wouldn't happen to be the rabbit killer would ya? lol.. I just remember running around with a guy and everytime a rabbit was within range he would run over and kill it.... then say something like... "Whoa... that was close, he almost got you" LMAO..
I was one of the first testers that discovered how to get to the area's of the world that technically...we shouldn't be able too. Thought the cities were mostly empty... it was still freakin cool to just wander around looking at the stuff.

LMAO... wow, ya... It had been so long ago,... I had forgot the name of that guild I was in. Not sure what happened to Lilly... she used to hang with me in several other games, but disapeared last year. <shrugs> wow.... allot of your names are starting to look familiar now. Don't recall anyone in Phalanx breaking NDA, but hell.... that was back in what... 2007? I have slept since then... so, don't remember.
Yea pullin old memories out of ye old mental roladex, need something to jog them up some... I guess your names did it.
I know we had a pretty loyal following for the game and yea the community was actually one of the better ones out of the lot.
I looked up the old forum links someone posted, apparently the old forums and databases have been taken down so no chance in us all saving and or rummaging our old posts and website for info. (Ya hear that Binkster!) We know your watching out there! The old wiki page is still up but considering the developer switch we dont know exactly whats going to be cut nor added to the game. Hopefully the core of it all wont change much.
As per topic, some of the hype was the massive battles Stieg was talking about. So it wasnt just going to be like 5 players alone, it was going to be like 5 players plus the minions they brought which was like oh I dont know, 25 or avatars engaged in godly gore. Back then, you werent going to catch that anywhere else and even now its still somewhat rare. There was talk of that getting bigger if I recall, I dont want to lie.
To top that off I believe the minion system was fairly unique in that you could use, outfit, trade and switch out minions. You could do this according to the occasion, so if you wanted say an archer unit and you were using a caster unit, you could make adjustments. There was alot of speculation as to how this applied to grouping as well. For instance, lets say your in a 3 man group and your tank chose a healer and an add-tank, and your player healer had a nuker and an archer. You could then fill your minions to fit and fill that to help have the total group. Mixxing and matching or just taking the complete roll of a five man group was possible too I believe again, dont want to lie.
Another thing people were fairly hyped about was the arena. Everyone wanted to get into the arena and pvp which was great because this allowed those who wanted to pvp really go at it in a gladiatorial type combat environment without forcing the rest of the community into the match. You know how in many mmorpgs out there you can just login and people are dueling at the bank or the auction house ect.. for some peopel thats really annoying, save a pvp server, so that was a saving feature many were looking forward to. I believe many spoke of spectators being able to watch the match of thier choosing. Eitherway if you wanted to have it out this was promising place to do it and if i recall, be rewarded for it?
When it came to one of the outstanding features of the game, Id not be doing it justice if i didnt bring up the fighting moves. There were suplexes, gores, stompings, poundings, groin shots and massive blows, I remember seeing some of the early footage of a player just getting pwned by a centaur, I mean pwnd folks. Like ohh sh** ouch! Thats gonna leave a mark!
As to the environment, well, things were huge and I dont mean woah look at that giant rat who drops a +5 bow of ubarosity, you would never see that mess in G&H. It more like holy cow look at that giant, he takes up the screen! Should we get help? I remember at one point actually looking up in a wooded area and felt like an ant becase when you looked at a tree, you were dwarfed. It was an actual huge tree not like in some mmos where the trees are a foot over your head you know? Everything was a specticle to see and thats not to say things werent properly scaled, its to say when you look at a tree in a forest, its the size you expect it to be and when you think of a titan then your getting a titan, no doubt about it. Even medusa and the minotaurus were no slouch, they were bigger than the player and powerful foes to boot. The game had an epic feel to it and it was in your face, funny thing is you yourself were no slouch, you were the son of a god.

You had to be be there (2006).
Writer / Musician / Game Designer
Now Playing: Skyrim, Wurm Online, Tropico 4
Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
Agreed. You had to be there to see Perpeptual start 2 MMOs at once and sack the one that was actually going to make them money.....
*sighs*
You mean sack the one that was going to make money when they very well could have released it instead... oh and then promptly turn belly up.
Game was a really fun concept. STO was actually going to be a good game, and what people wanted before it was picked up by cryptic and bastardized.

Yea, me and corydon were really active in the community. corydon kinda spilt off though when they started limiting God selections.
Shield of the Republics website is STILL up, funny reading some of that stuff.
