How customizable is the gear?

I beta tested FE for quite some time and was always turned off by the gear I would find. I dont mind the fact that the gear looks like stuff you would find in a trash heap, I was just turned off by the selection of this trash heap.
such as wearing a football helmet for head protection and other sporting equipment for armor. I guess im asking, has anything been added to these? Is there a point in the game when you stop looking like you just rummaged through the local ruined sporting goods shop and more like.something else?
anyone have any links of some higher end gear?

Gear eventually moves to military looking armor, at higher levels. A lot of the headgear in early beta used batting helmets as a placeholder, those have been replaced with 'real' headgear, now.
You probably still won't be all that happy with the gear as it stands now then.
Once you get out of S1 the gear starts to attain more of a "standard" look to it with faction sets if you want to go that route, rather than the hodge podge look predominant in S1. IMO though, that look fits the theme of the game. Off the top of my head I can only think of 2 things armor wise that resemble sporting gear and that's shoulder pads, and the helmets. Mot all shoulder pads look like sports type pads and there are other forms of head protection that look like regular hats as well.
Sorry no pictures for you. If you do a small amount of searching though, I'm certain they wouldn't be hard to find.

ya ive seen quite a few screenshots here and there an it does look like theres a lot more variety. I just didnt know who or where these shots were taken. So, I figured I'd ping the folks playing the game.
Im super impressed with the vehicles and landscapes. I should probably pick it up before the end of march while its on sale.
