Q: This game sandbox or theme park?
A: TERA has been described as a "sandbox MMO".
If that indeed is the case, I warmly welcome this top gun among the rather poor relatives of the genre

Well it definitely makes me want to try it out that much more.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
I can't see how the game is gonna be a sandbox. Just from reading the rest of the questions you can easily see they're going the theme park (not that I mind) road also channels don't make for a very good sandbox game.
How would you define a sandbox?
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
How would you define a sandbox?
completely player driven, lots of tools to do what you want in the world.......no instances xP
This makes no sense.

The following answers contradict that:
A: TERA will feature a combination of quests in both the open world and instances.
A: Channels and shards are different in that Channels are parallel instances within the same server, whereas shards are different servers.
A: Quests are a main part of the game
A: PVP will be on a sever-by-server basis
Sorry, I don't see what part of this game would be considered "sandbox." Maybe one of the quests involves killing 10 imps to reclaim the royal sandbox for some king.
Maybe the fact that it has predetermined classes should remove it from sandbox consideration.
themepark by the very videos.

This is how I would define it also. I'm looking forward to the game but even I would not define it as sandbox.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Haven't seen anything that shows a highly detailed/intertwined player crafting system nor anything on player housing/cities. In my view a sandbox must include those two key features (think UO or SWG pre-NGE) at least in order to be a sandbox.
At best i think "Sandbox" is starting to become the new hot button word again and these guys are trying to latch onto it to grab some more subscriptions when their product isn't a sandbox game.
Note, I didn't say this game was good or bad. Just that from the information they have listed on their website and stickied in their forums, this is a themepark game, head to toe.
"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Tera will have housing and crafting, the details on these is still foggy at best. But even so, sanbox it is not IMO unless they prove me wrong.

I hear ya. EQ2 has instanced housing (apartments and not houses really) and crafting yet I don't consider it a sandbox. The more details they give the better look I agree. I'm not particularly interested in playing this one but I am curious to see what they do in making TERA.

they said its an open world where players actions are going to affect the world and Darkfall has instances I was in one on my trial
If players actions affect the world in some way we can talk about sandbox elements, but predefined quests and char types is not sandbox in any way.
Also Darkfall do not have instances at all. If you are talking about dungeons you just get teleported to it but you still meet peoples that has entered that dungeon.
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

thats as much an instance as everyone gripes about AoC over so please dont try to say DF is above instances
and a quest is a quest I dont care if its given to you by the developer or another player in the game it is still a quest
and in all the schoolyard sandboxes I am sure you will find intellectuals, stronger types, weaker types, bullies, leaders etc same thing as char types
From recent sandbox games you can draw conclusion that sandbox games are those that are highly unpolished, unfinished, broken, with lack of content, ugly, clumsy fighting system, all time crashing, lagging, user unfriendly, etc. If that is definition of sandbox (aparentyl it's true for Mortal Online) then TERA is nothing like that.

Title:
"TERA Officially Labeled As a Sandbox MMO"
...which officially means it won't live up to anything NEAR that, based on past "labels" of sandbox MMOs.
"TO MICHAEL!"
I dont think they meant sandbox. I think they were just trying to say something completely generic and vague.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
well if you read the link in th OP and also watched the GDC demonstration you would know they said sandbox. It's actually starting to get pretty amusing watching all the feathers ruffle over this one.
I don't think its the players that are getting there feathers ruffled. There is nothing wrong with either types, but we know the difference between the two.

Oh I read the interview. He said its a sandbox, but then went on to say they will have instances for PvE and PvP, a class system with no sub-classes, the hint that there will be different servers for the game, and so on. He didnt even mention a player-driven economy.
they can say its a sandbox all they want, but if something quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, then its a duck.
Simply saying 'players will be able to affect the world' is such a vague thing to say it doesnt really hold any water.

It will be a "Theme parc" mmorpg.
Neither hybrid of sandbox / theme like Darkfall or sandbox like UO was.
Sandbox = freedom to do anything you want
and not to be forced to do something like "pvp" in darkfall.
For me only Sandbox out there is EvE online and rest is more or less hybrid between sandbox and theme parc.
EvE doors
See the best doors on EvE-on!
I cannot seem to edit those posts I make that use a quote now. lol why why why did they change it?
They can say whatever they want about It I have read reviews of players in closed beta seen videos depicting average gameplay and so on. It is no sandbox. Its closer to how Aion is than anything but with a much better combat system. Wonder if they even know what a sandbox is.
