    Depends. SE/FF hater? IT SUX

SE/FF fanboy? IT SUX, ONLINE FF IS NOT TRADITIONAL QQ

Normal person? It's looking pretty good, does things differently compared to the norm and there's not really that much bad to say about it, but it's not for everyone like the main series aren't. No PvP, and no twitch based gameplay = instant turn off for many. Those who don't mind though...

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I'm interested in it. From what I read it sounds like FFXIV might be more traditional in the sense that grouping to exp is actually a viable option.

I might go as far as to say that it's the preferred option. That, too, is a turn off for some.

So it depends on your own views if the game is shaping up to be good or bad, really.

That's true. To me, there are already more than enough 'massively single player online RPGs'. I'm eager to try something different.  I don't care about the whole 'this game vs that game' mentality, I just want something fun to play.

Personally, I'm definitely looking forward to this game. My guess is, just like FFXI, people will either love it or hate it.

For myself, I trust SE. They create amazing and unique FFXI online. It was like no other mmo around. I bet FFXIV will be something new and tasty.

I'll stick to it for 1 year at least before judging it :) maybe that's just me

OP's question is subjective to personal opinion.    In my opinion, it's underhyped and I can't wait I want to freeze myself in a glaciar and be awoken in the future!

I feel like the game is at a healthy medium if not a tad underhyped as we are seeing games like Tera promoting their games more than FFXIV. This may be because SE feels some of the game's features will not cater to each side (FFXI hardcores vs. New players) enough, and they do not want to tell too much without undergoing testing to see a larger population of feedback. The combat looks to be fairly dynamic with range which is one of new features I am looking forward to as a healer and tank because it provides a new type of challenge to deal with in a party vs. monster party fight. I was not around for the beginning of FFXI so I am not familiar with how open they are with their NDA. NDA can be a very powerful thing. If you are too loose, you can lose many potential customers and never gain a solid fan base. If you are too strict, you may deter people because the amount of information readily available is not being updated often enough. With this IP though, you will find many people automatically trying it. It will experience some very strong initial months of sales. I do hope that they start marketing this product a bit more heavily over the summer before the quarter of its release. Also, the lack of hype and sparse marketing could be due to a possible push back on the date. I am also uncertain of how long this game is in development, but, from what screens have been released, the game looks very good and polished. Every game can use more polish though.

TLDR: Great at the moment, but they will need to market the game more within the next few months during the beta phases. And I pray that they use something different than PlayOnline. ;)

FFXIV has some covers on a few magazines in the west this month so the marketing is literally just starting. :) And Playonline has already been confirmed to be scrapped; they're doing everything through the SquareEnix members site now I think, not sure but either way no more clunky launcher and nightmarish number of IDs and passwords to memorise.

On topic though, I'd say FFXIV is underhyped a fair bit at the moment due to the limited amount of info released. This will change once we finally know for sure how the advancement system works I expect as if it's different enough that alone will cause a lot of hype.

The game's reception will probably be mixed though. SE isn't making the mistake of trying to appeal to everyone, they're focussing on what they do best: solid, story driven PvE. Many will claim the game fails because it has no PvP, others will find countless other 'issues' with it because it doesn't do X or Y to cater to them. Many others won't look twice at it simply because it's trying to be different... everyone goes on about wanting something new in this genre but they'll always complain that it isn't enough like what they're used to. /sigh

The hype machine should ramp up signifigantly now that FFXIII is out. It's obvious that SE has been holding back on FFXIV both info and marketing-wise, so they can focus consumers and get them hyped for FFXIII before its release.

They've already added a ton of info to the site only days after XII came out. More will surely come soon.

hmm, well it isn't really hyped up or anything, the only people that might be over-hyped about it are FFXI players(including me). Although the game has a very large NA fanbase there is also a large hatred for the FF series in NA, so expect to see a good bit of trolls for it.

People will generally complain about the way the feel of the game is, just like they do about the offline gameplay in the FF series. If you like FF games and you aren't against online play then you will probably like it. The FF fans that dislike online play also do a good bit of bashing.

I remember when I heard about FFXI ten years ago I hated the idea of it but I picked it up anyway to give it a try, so i'm pretty sure a lot of the FF fans just hate the idea of online play and would rather SE just make a single player game.

It's funny because the team that makes the online games is actually very separate from the teams that make the offline ones. The general 'complaint' I've heard from the console FF fans, though, is that the online games aren't a 'true' FF (read as: 'I can't afford to pay a subscription fee') and so shouldn't be given a number in the series because it ruins their collection. That one always makes me laugh.

To be honest I'm hoping XIV manages to slide under the radar a little.
