There's been a lot of talk about SWTOR story driven quest system. Seems to me most people just browse the quests anyway so why would they want to watch a 2 minute cut scene every time they talk to an NPC. I think I'd turn that stuff off really quick which kind of defeats the purpose. I can't imagine the "casual" player wanting to pay attention to all that, and you can forget about the "hardcore" player caring. Is it just me and does everyone else really want to listen to NPC's explain the "story" in your MMO?

Why do you hate the RPG of MMORPG? I don't even look at games that have crappy lore. It's about as immersive as playing counterstrike.
Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.
EAT ME MMORPG.com!
You know, REAL RPG players want that.
Well, think Mass Effect.
On most MMO's I don't read the quests, but I never bypassed a dialogue in Mass Effect and I don't expect to do it in this game.
Im fine if its part of the story but it would get annoying if it was everytime you talk to a npc, only if they have a quest or something for you would I find it okay.
If it's done well like in Mass Effect, I won't skip those cutscenes... no, I would ENJOY them. Such things are one reason why I'm playing MMORPGs. Though I have to admit that I usually do not read quest texts in games like WoW as they are boring most of the time. :-(
I Agree with the OP, don't make this a M"assive"MO make it one of those single player games.
Fail.

when are you people going to learn, that RPG doesnt have anything to do with ROLE PLAYING?
The name comes from the idea of Character development, which originated in ROLEPLAYING table top games.
Thats it. See how that works now?
There has been many RPG games from the consoles, were most you cant even change your character's name.
Hell, why are we talking about this now? Does anyone know how SWTOR will involve character progression?
For example, if there's no obvious leveling system i.e. kill a hundred pandas, get a level and a cookie - then there's no need to rush through the content to end-game.
That's my problem with this thread, that you're assuming things already.
I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.
You all need to learn to spell.
Agreed. While I love a good story in a game just as much as anyone else, it doesn't seem that long cutscenes, branching dialogue and overemphasis on story fit well with MMO's.
With the time sinks involved in traveling, gathering and questing, I find that MMO's take enough time as it is without the addition of complex story options.
That being said, a great story may be a bonus, provided that the mechanics of the quest system and leveling were changed to not make the story an addition to the regular time sink. I would much prefer to participate in a story rather than spending that time running from one place to another or doing menial tasks as quests.
The story, if implemented in addition to the usual mechanics, will quickly become an annoying time sink.

I was going to write a wall of text about how your interpretation of something doesn't make it absolute, but I'm just going to leave it at people have different opinions
For instance, Role Playing to me means more of the part your character plays in the storyline (99% of the time saving the world or winning some fictional war for your side or some such thing) and has absolutely nothing to do with people acting like they really are their character or the rankings in guilds determine how you act to your guildmates.
The Character development you talk about goes hand in hand with Role Playing for me, I take it as how the character would've changed personality-wise during the duration of the storyline, Though it is hard to imagine with a game that doesn't have your character respond and i usually don't even bother trying
Hey Blazz...have you watched the SWTOR videos they are showing that "revolutionize" the genre? Go to their site and click "videos". Not much to assume. Pretty straightforward and they make no bones about their whole game working this way. "First MMO to have fully voiced NPC's/quests" (or something to that effect.) Heck, that must be what's taking them so long to finish it.
Well my friend. Thats why we have different GENRE for games.
We seperate Adventure game and RPG games in different catagories for a reason.
As I stated. RPG games deal with character development, not Role Playing. Because if that was the case, then Any adventure game would fit your definition of a RPG, even shooters like Halo 1/2.
And how would you define Character development? :P
Side note
Shooters generally wouldn't fit into my definition of an RPG, Most of the characters in shooters rarely change (think Master Chief), I can only think of 1 game where some people actually change
I really enjoy listening to what NPCs have to say. Typically the storyline for my MMO is pretty engaging. I do not want to miss out on what they have to say because I know that it is one of the strongest aspects of the game.

I'm on the fence on this one.
On the one hand, I like storylines, especially when my character is in them. So I enjoyed the cut scenes in Guild Wars, which were put in in moderation, not overdone.
But then I played Dragon Age Origins. OMG, kill a mob, watch a movie. Walk down a road, watch a movie. Click on an NPC, watch a movie. Look in a certain direction, movie time again. To hell with that.
The other problem with it comes up during grouping. 5 people, and 4 don't want to watch the movie. But they have to wait on the guy that does. Or you're that guy who wants to watch it, and your groupmates are hating on you that you did.
So Bioware hopefully knows that too much of this will drive mmo players up a tree. They know that yes? Tell me they do ....
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Amathe...that's what I'm saying. It really looks like they're taking the DragonAge Origins route with this one! Please tell me there's an "off" button in the menu. Other than that, it looks to be an amazing game...IMHO
Actually I think your definition of RPG's is rather limited
Got to agree here. I'm on the fence as well. Some points in Dragon Age I was very literaly noding off. At other points I was so engrosed in the story I totaly loved it. You throw other people into the equation and this whole system could get very messy. If I wanted to watch a cut scene or follow quest dialogue and somebody skiped it I would be infuriated. But at the same time I apreciate that Biowere is trying to do something new here and I have to get behind that really. And for all our speculation we still don't really know how it's going to be implemented. Also I think if you don't want a story driven game or a game that you can skip quest text there are plenty of games out there for you to play. Am looking forward to something diferent.
Considering everyone skipped cutscenes in Guild Wars even when they were 30 sec. long and were angry at you if you didn;t skip them too.. I doupt anyone will bother with "fully voised dialogues" in swotor. If they really want to add a voice over for every npc and quest in game.. well i think it's a waste of their time to be honest..
Character Development in RPG deals with Exp points of some kind.
Ever hear of the term RPG elements from other genres? Well thats were it come from.
Well, MMO's are story/lore driven. If you want to hurry along to the shiney objects quickly play console games. That is what the mechanics of those types of games are built around.
Or better yet, just don't play SWTOR? Reduce the amount of whiners from the get-go that will strive to ruin it for others.
The OP has a valid point, but I think he may be generalizing it a bit too much.
For example. There is a way to give you story, lore, cutscenes without boring you. FFXI does it with great cutscenes, LOTRO does it with some great epic book quests and cinematics.
I've played Mass Effect and did find the majority of dialogue options quite boring. Part of that had to do with how it was delivered to me. I have always been a proponent of the FFXI style cutscene or better yet, the Prince of Persia voice over dialogue while I run around the level. Also, the dialogue really has to be written in an engaging manner in order to suck me in. Most games don't or deliver it poorly. I hope SWTOR does it right, but I'm guessing it will be annoying like it is in Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
Again, I point to FFXI as a reference on how to deliver story without boring the masses. Let future developer read and learn.
RPG's and Character development predate Exp points
I agree, I think holding the players as captive audiences to watch annoying 2 minute cutscenes is lame and immersion breaking. What first generation MMO devs realized is that the players ARE the story. Sure, there are greater background conflicts going on, but the MMO experience is about the players' journey through the world as they hash out their own adventures.
There is nothing lamer than forcing players to sit and watch the big badass good guy spend two mentions bantering with the big badass bad guy. This is boring, contrived, and I would say anti-Roleplaying.
Well here lies the problem, that dialogue won't change, they might have 1-3 different chat ideas linked to that NPC but after that it wil ljus trtepeat the same chat over and over, that imo is not very immersive.Cutscenes,i like a nice action cutscene leading up to and defeating a boss, but dialogue cutscenes are usually cheesey and boring.I have been playing FFXIII and i'll tel lya the cutscenes have me not wanting to play anymore,i can't take 5 minutes of soap opera cut scenes and 2 minutes of gameplay.
IF EA/BIO could create a unique dialogue system that is not bound to repeating lines of code, then it would be real immersive and a cool additionm to the game, but does anyone actually think that will happen?
If you want good lore, then you ned to follow some of what EQ did, allow players to go into rp mode, allow for special speech dialogue when in that mode, have a language system, different rp players can learn the languages and communicate with any NPC that can understand them. You can only get a quest if yo uhave learned their language, only makes sense.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
