Interesting article and Cryptic states well over 100k subscribers. I think the scariest thing is that Jack Emmert wants to work on Godzilla and D&D. More well known popular ips that they can cut/paste and slap a monthly fee+item mall on ?
Comments
If Emmert told me the sky was blue, I'd make sure to look and double check. I trust that guy about as far as I could throw him. That said, I don't believe this game could possibly have 100K people that can overlook the terrible quality to pay a monthly sub. In short, I call BS on more than 20-30K paying players currently.
I have learned two things from CO and STO:
1. Never ever buy anything with Cryptic attached to it.
2. Never ever buy anything with Cryptic attached to it.
I can believe it regardless on how good a game is the IP alone holds enough strength for over 100k. To believe otherwise is just silly.
I understand the skepticism I really do. However I find it unlikely a company (any company) would allow such a lie boasting a 70% increase on actual numbers. There are far to many repercussions for such an act. There's a line between cryptic (no pun) shady behavior, and borderline criminal behavior. Such a claim would boost investing interests, would it not?
Wouldn't that open the door for lawsuits, or worse?

Maybe there is 100K people who are so blinded by the supposed Star Trek theme of the game to ignore...the lack of game. maybe there are. That's sad, because that makes Cryptic's business model right: Toss anything out the door every two years and you'll make money because we, as consumers are so fraking stupid.
You could create a Starfleet officer uniform in CO and just as much a Star Trek game, oops, except in CO, you can fly straight up and down!
Wonder what IP they will re-skin onto the engine for next year's 2-year wonder?
Given we're in the first 3 months I'm sure there are over 100k sub.
But lets break that down:
A. We're still in the first 3 months. Plenty of people had a free month, other bonus time, and resubed once. Not a viable indicator. Wait til STO is 6mos out and I bet it's a different story.
B. Over 100k? Ok, so that tells me its definitely under 200k.
C. Under 200k subs for a Star Trek MMO!?!? Fail.
Does it count lifetimers?
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
Considering the game used pre-existing tech, had a development period of only about 2 years and the overall deepness of the game.
It's pretty certain 100k+ subs is more than profitable for them. Sure the IP alone should garner more than that. However if they do have over 100k for a few months, they will more than make their money back, which means more games from cryptic sadly.
That's not even considering the C-shop. If even 10% of the players playing regularly use it frequently, they'll be cashing in big time on this game, I'm sure the IP alone is helping move boxes as well.
I doubt they would consider any of this as failing, if it turns out to be the case.

I doubt it would boost investments. Putting money in a company hemorrhaging money (atari) and with a mediocre track record (cryptic) just seems like a bad idea not matter what the company claims. Any sub #'s would be a little suspect as they can claim the lifetime subs forever even if the person never logs into the game again. Several lifers says they haven't logged in for weeks.
I loved emmert's "WoW makes it hard for developers/ruined the mmo industry claim." Yeah I guess that would be true when you release a game with 75% content for one faction and basically zero other than pvp for the other. In regards to the "had" to release it early, i guess you shouldn't make claims you can produce a quality mmo in 2 year escpecially in a market dominated by WoW. If you're going to release a game early and not quite finished, then what you do release had better be stellar not full of bugs, spelling and grammatical errors ect. If it's not, no matter what you've got planned coming down the pipe in 6 months, not much of your playerbase is going to sit around paying $15 a month for you to finish it.
Good points, the last one though, is iffy. IMO only, the game had nothing, zero to do with ST except some text for quests (some still have spelling errors) dropping names from the shows, sound effects and a ship skin instead of a caped hero.
I loved how in every episode of the shows, the captain would slaughter indiscrimately, have no regard for a prime directive, and never sought any solution besides wholesale genocide of a species. Wait....
I think if a decent company, say Turbine or Bioware or Blizzard had gotten the IP, we would have had a ST game.
If they were working from an original IP, they'd be off to a great start. Factor in they're working from the Star Trek IP and its pretty disappointing.
Yeah because IP alone worked so well for matrix onlline.
Those are not good numbers for a game with as major an IP as Star Trek. Horrible, actually.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Well, he's probably right, sadly. At least in the first 3 months. MO probably had good numbers interested in the beginning...until the wool came off everyone's eyes.
SWG had the same appeal as ST does, until SoE did their thing.
An IP will bring in the suckers (like your truly) but if the game is shite, even a juggernaught like my beloved ST universe won't make up for it.
So, I guess if STO has 100k subs, it must still be honeymoon period.
I have to admit, I wish Cryptic would get what they deserve for this game. Blacklisted from future purchase by real MMO players worldwide.
Did he say subs or players? There are people who are still on their free time but cancelled their sub. Technically they're still active account until their free time expires. I think it's definitely between 100k-200k if it was over 200k he would have been spouting that.
In all the comparison of sub numbers lately, i wonder how good old EQ would stack up today. I think I heard at one point they had over 400k subs. I wonder what the numbers would be today if you adjusted for the number of online gamers/ pc gamers today.

Yes I see a trend!
I wonder if they count lifetime as active subscriptions? I mean, some people bought life time or one-year subscriptions and some might not be playing anymore. If these people are counted, even if they aren't playing, it can make the numbers seem higher than the actual people currently playing the game.
Do you really think that they got enough lifetime subs to make a big difference?
Well if everyone who's one the boards claiming to be a lifer is really one, there may be quite a few more that don't post on the boards. I don't think 10 or 20k but it may be in the hundreds or thousands. In the end, not enough to make a difference, after all they've already paid their dues.
SWG topped out at about 300k subs, very respectable, but still considered a failure. They can make decent money off an mmo with over 100k subs, but still......I mean c'mon its star trek. Thats the best they can do?
It depends. If I remember correctly, you can recoup the cost of a lifetime subscription in about 2 years. So say there are 50k people who bought a lifetime subscription. That pretty much means that Cryptic got 2 year's worth of subscriptions from 50k people before the game even went live.
Another benefit to this is that Cryptic can claim these lifers as active accounts until the end, regardless of whether or not the lifers are playing the game. However, if they do this, then it means that the number of active players is much lower than what they are saying. F2P games are known to do this. Since they have no monthly fee, they claim all accounts, active and inactive, as current, which bloats their numbers.
I believe that a lot of people bought into Cryptic's "limited lifetime" discount thing. I was pretty active on the official forums at the time and saw many people claim to be a lifer. Personally, I feel that it was dishonest of them to offer discounted lifetime memberships before the game launched but that's Cryptic for you, integrity is an option with them.
Just my opinion here... But I would be surprised if they got more than 1 or MAYBE 2 thousand lifetime subs.
true the game sucked monkey nads but one thing to consider is matrix was a fad st has a cult following with ppl that dress like characters from the franchise matrix never even came close to lasting as long as st has
which is why its even more pathetic at least matrix online tried something new sto is just a rehash of cox with a st skin which really that shouldnt be
i dont really like st or star wars but i must say that if i did i would probably be pretty pissed about how crappy this game has come out
That would be my guess, too. But yes, I'm sure they're counting the lifers in their subscription numbers. There's really no reason for them not to.
hey money over morals everytime thats big business for ya
i said before the game even went live lots of ppl would buy into it just because of the ip and in basic reality your probably right alot of ppl got suckered thinking hey this is the "REAL" sto not just some shitty knockoff only to find wait its a shitty knock off
