Gaming Laptop Suggestions

I need to get a laptop and im aiming for a gaming laptop with a price range of around $1200. Alienware seems a bit pricey for what you get, I dont care about flashy LEDS or it looking awesome. CPU Q9000, i5, i7, for graphics I want the equivilant to nvidia GTX260 or above never tried radeon but willing, 4 gigs of ram is fine, 400 or more GBs for HDD, and 2+ hours battery life. im leaning towards a asus laptop but not entirely sold of them yet. these are just slight guidelines but im not all that picky if they change.

Any input you can give me to help my decision will be appreciated.

Thank You

the resolution for that is kinda strange, id never use the thumbprint reader, and gts360m sounds sketchy.

The price range has jumped to 1.5k and now im looking at this brick Asus G73JH-A2 seems like everything i'd want, battery life takes a hit, but the 2 500GB drives and the 8gigs of ddr3 aint shabby.

still sitting on the fence if i really want to get one though.

Ohh ASUS finally designed a 5870 version of the laptop.  Currently only MSI and ASUS offer the new ATI Mobility GPUs.  Its a pretty good price for performance in a laptop.  Usually those ones will go over 2k.

Meh, the 360m only sounds sketchy because nvidia's naming scheme is bullshit.

That site has a list of mobile GPU's in order of power, really useful to reference since laptop naming schemes are so f'd up.

But that Asus you linked is awesome. Personally I don't like RAID drives in a laptop because of the heat though, and no real performance benefit.. Heat is a huge issue on gaming laptops, my buddy has a top end Dell and he can't play a game for 10 minutes without crashing unless he puts it on a laptop cooler.

Also for resolution, I actually prefer the lower resolution on laptop displays for two reasons..

First, 1920x1080 on 17" or 18" is totally unnecessary, if you have money to spend then sure but you don't need that much pixel density. 1920x1080 isn't really necessary until 22" or 23"+, on 17" it's really a marketing thing more than anything.

Second, those laptop GPU's are usually underpowered, meaning they don't have the horsepower to drive a game in 1920x1080 anyway, so better to have the native resolution be something your GPU can handle.

But if you go with the Asus with a Mobility 5870 it should handle 1920x1080 well.

    Slight Rant thingy

well im still on the fence trying to convince myself to just buy one now. any fancy new tech that will come out soon i should wait on? solid state drives are nice but i dont really need em, serial photon bus lines probably wont be out for another 6 years and terminal laptops for maybe 10. 3D is neat but most of it just makes it like your looking through a window or down into a box, are there any pop out 3D i wanna say like a holograph. while i say that if ya feel like educating someone to lazy to do a quick google search how do holographs work? ive heard of the mist boxes or what ever and i have some ideas that are probably impossible to pull off unless solid/heavy light is attainable. newho yea feel free to turn this into a convo on future tech and other jibber jabber.

and thank you for the previous comments. i wouldnt use the top resolution for the desktop since i find it to small.

this is a good laptop .i have a dell studio 17 with i5 and hd5650 and can run crysis and eq2 high setting with zero lag.the g360 is suppose to be more powerful even as the 3d mark 05(not the best indicator ) has the hd5650 at about 14k and this on at 16k i expect a 10% better performance then my card.

The ASUS G73jh-A1 is the most sought after laptop right now and with good reason.  Its definetly the best performing laptop.  The one you were considering earlier is the A2 which is the 2nd most sought after one and does not come with Blu-Ray.  If you check again, the price shot up again by $200 due to demand over the last few days.  The third most sought after one is the X1 which shouldn't be your top choice because it doesn't come with all the extras in the A1 and A2.
