Hey I used to play Underlight! Err no my dad did, thats right my dad.
It was a fine roleplaying game, but then in those days most of the players in a MMORPG were roleplayers. By the time of WoW coming out we were a minority and it has shown in the lack of RP in MMO's ever since.
These games are very old and I can't believe there are people out there still playing them; although I can see it happening if their only concern is the community and their progress.
A new list of "Five Longest Running MMOs" should be redone to games of the modern era, i.g. EQ, SWG, etc... However, this modern list of oldest running games maybe a coupld of years from now. I only bring it it because the market has so many MMOs that it's hard sifting through the pool of games to notice the older games.

Way to go, pick out a list of completely unknown games and attempt to foist this off on us as firsts.
Sorry you deserve the fickle finger of fate award on this post.
Everyone knows that Meridian was the first MMO, UO the second and EQ the third MMO. All your post does is display complete ignorance of the genre. I would be quite willing to bet not one of the posters here has heard or played any of the other listed games.
Remember, back in those days you had to buy things in the store, downloading a game with the slow modems we had was not possible. Not sure how the games you mentioned in your article distributed their games, but it was most certainly not through any stores any of us visited.
My first MMO was Hostile Space, I started playing back in 1997 and is still running today. It was technically a free to play MMO considering it's alpha and beta stage lasted 8 years, before they started charging money, and the only sign up limitation was if you ever heard of the game.
I remember playing The Realm when it was first produced by Sierra back in their King's Quest days. For its time, it was very sophisticated, introducing elements such as armor enchantments, player housing, clothing dyes, holiday events, etc.
It's also the only MMO I've played that actually issued a complete wipe on all player characters long after general release. Rather than trying to convert existing characters and gear to an ambitious content update, Sierra decided it would be best to just wipe the slate clean and start over from scratch. As you can imagine, a lot of subscribers didn't agree.

I played every single one of them, and I used my slow modem to do it. I'm sorry you couldn't figure out how to sit around and wait for a few hours.

You sure are wrong.
Aye, I remember playing (and ofc downloading) Tibia with my crappy modem. It was pretty scary, because everytime the connection crashed my character would remain in the server, being an easy target for pk's :P Ozmodan's post is a nice display of unecessary arrogance.

Hehehe. You reminded me of something my brain had supressed and long forgotten: The fear of connection dropping out at any time when my family picked up the phone, and the consequential murder of my avatar by any number of hungry and ravenous monsters, be they PC or NPC.
It was my first MMORPG and I recently quit it this winter. Played it since 10!
It was so mysterious and had just the best community and gameplay, up until recent years where botting and cheating skyrocketed. Nowadays almost everybody has a cheat program to level for them... considering this is mostly a grind game, and there is no endgame.
The absolute best part of it though, were the wars. The way PvP was done was so damn fun and exciting! You lost quite a bit if you died, but that added to the fun.

Uh, everyone doesn't know that. Only people who are ignorant of MMO history believe that Meridian59 is the first. The first graphical MMO, recognized by many people in the industry, was Neverwinter Nights on AOL back in 1991. Prior to that are mostly text based games which are lumped together with MUDs/MUSHes/MUSEs/MUXes as a proto-MMO. So what you think "everyone knows" is off by almost a decade.
Furthermore your assertion that people won't know those games were proved equally false in the 2 pages prior to your post. People were either waxing nostalgic over the games on the list or pointing out games which were even older than some entries on the list.
So, hate to break it to you, kid, but the it is not the OP who deserves the fickle finger of fate award, it would be you.

I agree. Ozmodan's ignorance is typical of the young kids that think that 'if its not something that is part of my time period, its not significant'. People with an ignorance of history are doomed to repeat the same mistakes instead of leaning from the mistakes of others. If the young games designers would go back and look at what made some of these older games great and last for years, we wouldn't have so many new releases that are disappointing.
I'm a little young for the list I think.. and never got interested in MMOs untill FFXI.. probably didn't know what an MMO was... so this was an interesting list for me.

You should not bet. . or at least read the posts before yours . . . the ones that have people "remembering" the games and having played them. . before betting. Too funny I posted before you. . and my avatar is from meridian beta. . really.
I'm glad to see Tibia on the list. It was my favorite game to play on the college campus computers. I would log on to whatever available compter there was, and run the game from my simple 128mb thumbdrive. Memories.

You missed Kingdom of Drakkar. Started in 1992. Players connected via dial-in. Still running to this day.
Not just another pretty color.
i would have to say " Helbreath " even still its playable cause of good pvp idea it has.

Enjoyable article. Never realised M59 returned.

Actually you should just avoid betting altogether
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
KoD never gets its due.. EVER.
I still play the game on and off when I feel like paying out the nose.
The gameplay of Kingdom of Drakkar and Legends of Kesmai has yet to be beat IMO.
The Realm Online was my first mmorpg too, but by the time I played it it was already considered an old game and there were lots of 3D mmorpgs out.

While not young in years, I'm young to the MMO party. Great article for me - fantastic read, love hearing about these games.

Hurm, I had not heard of any of them, heh. Oh well... back then I played single player games only.

They actually got the #1 and #2 correct.
I'm utterly shocked that you didn't put Ultima Online on there. Which is essentially the first popular graphical MMORPG ever.
