A countdown to beta sounds unlikely - betas are too secretive for them to count down to. I could understand a countdown to open beta but I think there's a 99.99% chance SWTOR isn't going into open beta in a few days... LOL. It's most-likely something much more tangible, like a new game announcement or some big surprise about SWTOR.
I think it may just be an announcement for Mass Effect 3. If you notice.. the countdown is on the main Bioware site and the Mass Effect site but not on SWTOR's.

Open Beta? Absolutely not. Phase 1 Closed Beta? Possible, but unlikely.
I believe it will be an announcement of a new Baulder's Gate, Another Sequel (ME3), or a new BioWare IP.
From the Bioware website itself concerning this countdown:
BioWare's PR has responded to Joystiq's Ben Gilbert with the following statement: "The announcement is more community focused and won't be a game announcement. Unfortunately we can't share the details with the press."

My guess was that they were going to release the new DLC for Mass Effect 2 that adds the hover-tank. The fact that the timer is appearing on all of their sites doesn't support this theory though. I wonder what they have cooking...
Since the countdown is on multiple game sites and not just one in particular and add to that that they have said it is not a gaming announcement and more of a community annoucement, I think it can only be one of two things.
First, a movie is being made on one of their IP's.
Or second, and most likely, they are going to have some type of convention somewhat like Blizzcon.

But we can all hope for the start of closed beta.

It's on the DA:O site too
Maybe they're going to announce Dragon Age Online or Mass Effect Online
