If you were Microsoft, would you want CO on your console?
Microsoft ditched CO when it had more well-known name of Marvel Universe: Online because they thought it was total crap (and guess what, they were right).
Why would they want CO now?
CoH: Mr E-Man, Energy Arc, IG-2112MD, Slayer Faith, Master TimeLord Mr E-Being CoV: Mr E-Villain, Dark Willow, Cold Satisfaction, Mr E-Mech, Mr E-Lectric Freedom Server
CO theoretically has more potential, with it's more open game design, but at launch it was a complete mess. While they've fixed a lot of things since then, there are still serious complaints about certain parts of the game.
One of the key elements of CoX that is (still) completely lacking in CO - and I mean utterly and absolutely absent - is fun and dynamic teamplay. CoX does this better than any other mmo I've ever played and CO doesn't do it at all.
In CoX you don't just have half a dozen different classes you might find in a team. There's a dizzying array of powerset combinations that could be there, and within that, different powers players might have selected from within those powersets. Combine this with the way powers interact with each other - particularly the secondary effects - and you've got buttloads of variety.
The new guy who's taken over from Roper has said the lack of emphasis on teamplay is one of the things they plan to address. It'll be interesting to see what they do.
Paragon Studios is a far superior developer than Cryptic Studios. They have proven that once they took over. Cryptic can come up with good ideas but they do a piss poor job when it comes to the execution. Their server structure for CO and STO is horrible. It goes against every social aspect of a MMO. They're not MMO's. They're singleplayer RPG games with stat tracking and a build in char like Guild Wars. No ass teams in those games unless they PvP. They should not be charging people a monthly fee whatsoever. Let alone have a microtransaction system in addition to that. Both of those games feel rushed. They lack content, direction and have no spark in them whatsoever. They're lackluster at best. They should be ashamed for tainting the Star Trek universe with their inferiority.
God knows how CoX would have turned out if NcSoft wasn't there to hover over their backs and keep them in line.
Personally I like Co better than COH. First off, COH was not much different in content or linear style or bugs with the combat or issues with powers than CO was at launch. They are adding and correcting things as they go along and I find the changes are fairly well thought out as compaired to the rush the damn thing out the door policy they had for the launch.
They need to put some emphasis on the power stats and structure. Even with the testing they added in later, the powers are difficult to understand and predict until you actually get into it.
However, it does make for some interesting try and see set ups. Up until recently I had tried to stick within the guidelines of a single power set. After thinking about it. I started paying more attention to the powers OUTSIDE of the current set that I was in.
This truly does add a whole new level of game play. Sadly, it does require lots of trial and error. Oft times not finding out that this build will not work until you have invested some time into the current toon.
If they ever DO get around to adding vehicles into the game it will FAR surpass COH.
Oh, BTW. I get more of a SH feeling playing CO than playing COH. I always felt more like a Super Team Member in that game as opposed to a Super Hero in CO. One who does team up with others but, is not completely dependant upon them.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

Don't think CO is doing very well....
'Well, it seems that Champions Online has joined the long list of MMO's killed by Microsoft. It is official from Jack Emmert, there will be no version of Champions Online for Xbox 360: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/cryptic-abandons-champions-online-for-consoles '

I have to say CoX.
